About Jeweller Magazine

Jeweller Magazine

Overview

Jeweller is Australia's dedicated business-to-business magazine for the jewellery industry, published from Melbourne since March 1996 — originally as Australian Jeweller, and since a 2006 relaunch under its current, shorter title. It is a trade publication in the strict sense: written not for jewellery shoppers but for the retailers, suppliers, manufacturers, buying groups and service companies that make up the Australian and New Zealand jewellery business.

The magazine combines a monthly print and digital edition with a high-volume news website at jewellermagazine.com, which publishes industry news daily. Its editorial territory covers the whole commercial life of the trade: diamond and gemstone markets, laboratory-created diamonds, watches, retail strategy, buying groups, supplier news, trade fairs, industry politics and the long-running controversies of a sector the magazine itself has often prodded into argument. Jeweller is equally known for its research: since 2010 it has published a periodically updated State of the Industry Report, and since 2007 it has tracked the industry's buying groups, positioning itself as a journal of record for a trade that historically had very little reliable data about itself.

History

Jeweller's founder is Coleby Nicholson, a Melbourne magazine publisher who had built and sold the publishing company Niche Media in the mid-1990s. As Nicholson recounted in a 2011 anniversary history published in the magazine, he was recruited in 1995 to launch a serious business magazine for the jewellery trade despite knowing, by his own admission, nothing about jewellery. The result, Australian Jeweller, was published for the first time in March 1996. Its first cover story attacked 'discounting' and 'two price' (Was/Now) advertising — an issue the magazine was still campaigning on fifteen years later — and its first issue carried sixteen advertisers and, presciently, a story about a Sydney man who had started an online jewellery store.

Nicholson left after the launch, but returned about five years later to manage the magazine again, subsequently acquired the title himself and relaunched it in 2006 as Jeweller. Under that name the magazine expanded from a print title into a digital-first trade publisher: the website grew into a daily news service, a weekly newsletter was added, and the magazine built a searchable archive and supplier directory. In 2007 Jeweller began closely examining Australia's jewellery buying groups, and in 2010 it published its first comprehensive State of the Industry Report, an analysis of the core segments of the trade — fashion and fine jewellery stores, chains, brand-only stores and flagships — that found, among other things, that chain stores represented only about 32 per cent of jewellery stores, contrary to widespread industry belief. Updated editions of the report and of the Buying Group Report have followed at intervals since, most recently a Buying Group Report update in 2023.

The COVID-19 period marked another expansion. While, as the magazine noted, many international trade publications went into hibernation or closed, Jeweller increased its publishing frequency in 2020 from monthly to twice per month, and Angela Han — described by the magazine in 2022 as its publisher — credited that decision with driving a sustained rise in its online readership. The title marked its thirtieth anniversary year in 2026 still publishing daily news and monthly editions.

Programming and Content

The website's news coverage is the engine of the modern Jeweller. On a typical day the homepage mixes Australian retail news — monthly sales results for independent retailers, buying group and industry association affairs, supplier and brand announcements — with international trade stories covering major diamond discoveries, auction results, responsible-sourcing litigation, brand expansion and trade fair reports from centres such as Hong Kong and Bangkok. Regular bylines in 2026 include journalist Samuel Ord, whose reporting spans retail data, industry governance and opinion, and Angela Han, who writes major features on subjects such as the Argyle pink diamond legacy and Asian trade fairs.

Feature coverage digs into the issues shaping the trade: the terminology and marketing battle over laboratory-created diamonds (which the international body CIBJO has ruled should be called 'synthetic'), the future of Australian pink diamonds following the 2020 closure of the Argyle mine, watch market trends, and the governance of the Jewellers Association of Australia, which the magazine scrutinises closely and sometimes combatively. Its Centre Stage section carries opinion columns — the long-running Soapbox series among them — while the directory side of the site showcases new products from suppliers in a 'Hot Products' stream and seasonal buying guides, including an annual Christmas Buying Guide for retailers stocking up for the holiday season.

The magazine's research publications sit on top of this news flow. The State of the Industry Report and the Buying Group Report draw on Jeweller's own database of industry participants to measure the structure of the trade — store numbers, chain versus independent share, buying group membership — data that, as the magazine points out, no industry body maintains. Educational content for retailers, including material on CAD/CAM technology and retail practice, rounds out the offering.

Audience and Reach

According to Jeweller's own media information, its primary readership is retailers — independent jewellery stores and chain stores — while its secondary audience is the suppliers, wholesalers and manufacturers who market products and services to those retail buyers. The magazine describes the title as recognised since 1996 as the leading industry magazine in Australia and New Zealand, and points to independent web metrics in support of an international audience: reporting Alexa data in January 2022, Jeweller recorded a global website ranking of 54,878 as at 31 December 2021, ahead of long-established United States trade titles including JCK, National Jeweler and Instore, with a daily time on site of 29.6 minutes and an average of 22 page views per visit. The same report carried the magazine's claim of a 12 million e-magazine readership. Feedspot, the content-reader service, has also ranked Jeweller among the world's leading jewellery publications — the magazine cites a number three world ranking. These figures are the publisher's own reported claims rather than audited measurements, but they reflect a consistent editorial positioning: a small Australian publisher deliberately writing for a world jewellery-trade audience as well as its home market.

Digital Presence

Jewellermagazine.com is a substantial news and reference site. Beyond the daily news feed it offers category browsing across the trade's main product areas — bespoke jewellery, pink diamonds, diamond rings, wedding and engagement jewellery, gold and silver jewellery, watches, fashion jewellery, loose diamonds and laboratory-created diamonds — together with a login-based subscriber area, the current monthly issue presented for reading online, product directory listings, and an archive of features and research reports reaching back many years. The magazine also distributes a weekly email newsletter to the trade, and its content is syndicated through library and aggregator services such as EBSCO and international gem and jewellery library collections. The site was publishing multiple news stories per day when checked in October 2026, including retail sales coverage dated 13 October 2026.

Ownership and Organisation

Jeweller is an independent, privately held trade publisher based in Melbourne, Victoria. It was founded by Coleby Nicholson, who launched the magazine in 1996, later acquired it and relaunched it as Jeweller in 2006, and wrote for it as editor for many years, including a long-running line of commentary on industry statistics and ethics. By 2022 the magazine was describing Angela Han as its publisher; Han also writes the title's major features. The newsroom is small and byline-driven: Samuel Ord is the magazine's principal news journalist, and regular contributors such as David Wheeler write its opinion columns. The business operates under the Jeweller Magazine name from Melbourne — business directories list it on St Kilda Road, Melbourne — and sells advertising and directory listings to jewellery suppliers alongside its subscription and digital offerings.

Contact and Availability

Jeweller's monthly magazine is available by subscription in print and digital (e-magazine) form, and the website at jewellermagazine.com is open to readers, with a member login for account holders and a weekly newsletter for trade subscribers. Business directory listings give the magazine's Melbourne address as 370 St Kilda Road, Melbourne, Victoria 3004, with telephone contact on +61 3 9696 7200; editorial correspondence has historically been addressed to The Editor, Jeweller Magazine, South Melbourne, Victoria.
