About Roads Online
Roads Online
Overview
Roads Online is the digital news service of Roads & Infrastructure Magazine, the Australian business-to-business publication for the road management, road construction and civil works industries, published by Prime Creative Media from Melbourne. At roadsonline.com.au the title publishes daily news on the planning, funding, building and maintenance of Australia's road network — highway and bridge projects, road safety programs, tenders and contracts, asset management, and the pavement, asphalt and bitumen technologies the industry depends on — alongside a monthly print magazine of features, technical papers and project case studies.
The publication describes itself, in its own billing, as "Australia's only specialist road management, construction and civil works magazine", and its online newsroom is organised around the way the industry itself works: state-by-state project reporting, government funding announcements, and the equipment and materials marketplace that supplies road crews across the country. Its readers are the engineers, contractors, asset managers and public servants responsible for a road network that carries the overwhelming majority of Australia's freight and passenger movement.
History
The title's documented modern history begins under a different masthead. Prime Creative Media acquired Roads & Civil Works Australia Magazine, including all of its print and digital assets, in mid-March 2015. The magazine already had longstanding relationships with the sector's industry associations, and the new owner moved quickly to confirm them: the Australian Asphalt Pavement Association (AAPA) continued its partnership with the magazine, whose Asphalt Review section was a cornerstone of its editorial content, and other associations entered media partnership arrangements to use the magazine as a platform for communicating with their members. Prime Creative Media's managing director John Murphy said at the time that the publisher understood the importance of strong industry association relationships and was proud to announce the partnerships as a positive first step for the magazine's future.
Two years later the publisher broadened the title's remit and its name. Announcing the change, Prime Creative Media said that as of 1 August 2017 the masthead of Roads & Civil Works would become Roads & Infrastructure Australia. Editor Robbie Parkes explained the reasoning in a letter to readers: the long-running masthead had reached a tipping point, and the growth the magazine had experienced enabled it to expand into the wider infrastructure sector — rail, airports, ports, utilities and transport — while keeping roads and civil construction as its backbone. "Roads and civil works has been, and always will be, a core component of what this publication talks about and engages its readers on," Parkes wrote. The masthead was later styled Roads & Infrastructure Magazine, the name it carries today, with the website continuing to operate as Roads Online.
The title has continued to publish through the subsequent decade as part of Prime Creative Media's infrastructure portfolio, covering successive waves of Commonwealth and state road funding, the industry's shift towards recycled and low-carbon pavement materials, and the digital transformation of road construction and maintenance.
Content and Coverage
Roads Online's daily news coverage follows the money and the machinery of Australian roads. Typical stories in October 2026 included the Victorian Government's road maintenance blitz, which the site reported had repaired more than 100,000 potholes since July under a $1.4 billion maintenance investment; a Federal Government commitment of nearly $135 million for 45 road safety projects under the Safer Local Roads Infrastructure Program, broken down state by state; tenders opening to replace the ageing Grawin Creek and Rawsonville bridges in New South Wales; and a Northern Territory tender for highway upgrades in the Barkly region. The mix is characteristic: funding announcements, tender and contract news, project milestones and completions, and road safety policy, reported at state and national level.
Alongside the news, the monthly magazine carries longer-form material: features and case studies on major projects, technical papers drawn from roads conferences, contributions from industry associations and advocacy groups, and product and technology coverage spanning asphalt and bitumen science, stabilisation, paving equipment and road maintenance machinery. A recurring annual feature, the magazine's Year in Review, invites companies across the industry to showcase the projects they completed in the preceding twelve months; the 2026 edition was open for submissions in the spring of 2026. The website also hosts a marketplace of used roadbuilding plant and equipment listings, connecting the editorial audience with the publisher's classifieds business.
Audience and Reach
Roads & Infrastructure is written for decision-makers across the public and private sides of the roads industry: road agency and local government asset managers, civil contractors and subcontractors, consulting engineers, asphalt and pavement specialists, and the equipment and materials suppliers who serve them. In its own LinkedIn company description, the publisher says the magazine is distributed to over 5,500 key decision makers in what it calls the $100 billion-plus roads and infrastructure industry, as a central tool used in making purchasing decisions; that figure is the publisher's own and is not independently audited. The Write Away Communication media directory, in an entry current to the early 2020s, listed the magazine with a circulation of 4,984, the website at 35,000 monthly page views and a newsletter subscriber base of 11,480 — directory figures supplied by the publisher rather than audit results. The title's LinkedIn page had approximately 36,600 followers when checked in October 2026. No current independently audited circulation figure for the title is published, and none is claimed here.
Digital Presence
Roadsonline.com.au is the title's daily platform, publishing news across its industry sections, hosting the equipment marketplace, and carrying subscription, advertising and media kit information for the print magazine. The monthly print edition remains the flagship product — the site's subscribe page offers full subscriptions guaranteeing delivery of every issue — while the website, e-newsletter and social channels carry the faster-moving news and project coverage between issues. The publication maintains an active LinkedIn presence under the Roads & Infrastructure Australia name, posting story links and industry updates to its follower base, and is also present on Facebook and X under the Roads Online identity. Its digital operation sits within Prime Creative Media's wider platform of infrastructure titles and events, and the publisher promotes the title's coverage of events such as the International No-Dig conference, reflecting the masthead's broader infrastructure remit.
Ownership and Organisation
Roads Online and Roads & Infrastructure Magazine are owned and published by Prime Creative Media, the Melbourne-based business-to-business publisher, which acquired the title — then Roads & Civil Works Australia — in March 2015 and relaunched it under the Roads & Infrastructure masthead in August 2017. Prime Creative Media describes itself as Australia's largest independently owned B2B multi-platform publisher — its own characterisation — with mastheads across road transport, manufacturing, logistics, engineering, mining and resources, infrastructure, waste management and education. Editorial staff work within the publisher's multi-title newsroom structure; contributors to the magazine include the industry associations with which it holds media partnerships, and its pages carry both staff journalism and technical contributions from within the sector.
Contact and Availability
Roads Online is available at roadsonline.com.au, where readers can follow daily industry news, subscribe to the print magazine and newsletter, download the title's media kit and browse the equipment marketplace. Project submissions for the magazine's Year in Review and other editorial enquiries are handled through the website's contact points. The publisher, Prime Creative Media, is headquartered at 379 Docklands Drive, Docklands, Victoria 3008, and publishes its switchboard number as +61 3 9690 8766 on its title websites.
