About Rogers TV Fredericton
Rogers TV Fredericton
Overview
Rogers TV Fredericton is the English-language community cable channel serving Fredericton, New Brunswick, carried on channel 10 for subscribers of the Rogers cable system in the provincial capital and its surrounding communities. It is one local channel within Rogers TV, the network of community channels owned by Rogers Communications, but it is not a relay of the network's Ottawa anchor or of any other city's station: it is the community channel for Rogers' Fredericton service area, one of the zone-based community channels Rogers operates across New Brunswick, and its schedule is built around Fredericton itself. The channel mixes programming produced by Rogers staff with access programming proposed and produced by members of the community, made with the help of volunteers and local partner organizations. Because Fredericton is the seat of New Brunswick's government, the channel's identity is shaped by civic coverage — provincial political programming, municipal council coverage from the capital region, and local magazine and business shows — alongside the community events, sports and specials that fill community-channel schedules everywhere. It has no over-the-air signal and is not carried by any other television provider; it exists only on the Rogers cable system in its own zone. The channel's program listings and show pages are published in its Fredericton section of the Rogers TV website, rogerstv.com/fredericton.
History
Community channels arrived in New Brunswick in the Fundy Cable era: Fundy began setting up community channels in the province in the early 1970s, starting in Saint John and Edmundston, and community programming spread through the company's systems, Fredericton's included, in the decades that followed. The decisive step came in 1998, when the province's local community programming stations were grouped as TVNB — described as the first provincial programming network in Canada not owned by a provincial government — and Shaw Cable acquired the New Brunswick cable licences from Fundy Cable the same year. Rogers and Shaw swapped cable assets in 2000, bringing the New Brunswick systems to Rogers, and the channels were rebranded as Rogers Television in February 2002. The network was renamed Rogers TV in April 2008, with TV Rogers as the French-language counterpart, and relaunched with a new logo and on-air presentation on 1 September 2016.
The Fredericton channel's regulatory position was tested in Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2014-204. Rogers applied to amalgamate its many small New Brunswick and Newfoundland distribution licences into seven licences aligned with the zones established to provide community programming — a structure the CRTC approved — and at the same time asked for a condition of licence letting it fund a second, French-language community channel in each of the Fredericton and Saint John service areas. The Commission denied that part of the application on 1 May 2014, questioning whether two channels were justified in markets of that size. The decision preserves a snapshot of the Fredericton channel at the time: according to the record before the Commission, the existing community channels in Fredericton and Saint John distributed on average about ten hours of programming a day, of which roughly one hour a day was original programming, with the remaining hours given to public service messages on a community bulletin board. When Rogers restructured its community television operations in 2017, closing its Greater Toronto Area stations after a CRTC policy change let metropolitan operators redirect community funding to local news, the small- and medium-market New Brunswick channels, Fredericton among them, continued.
Programming and Content
The Fredericton schedule follows the Rogers TV community model, adapted to a capital city. Locally originated series in the service's current programme catalogue include Business Insight Fredericton and Exploring Fredericton Homes, both made for and about the capital, and the channel carries the Fredericton output of Rogers tv Community News, the New Brunswick service's local news strand. Provincial programming has a natural home on the channel: coverage of Question Period at the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick — which sits in Fredericton — the 2026 State of the Province Address and the province-wide NB Municipal Vote 2026 election program all appear in the current catalogue carried in the Fredericton zone. Municipal coverage extends beyond the city limits: the Village of New Maryland, a Fredericton suburb, has its formal council meetings filmed and made available on Rogers TV, with past meetings gathered under a "New Maryland Village Council – Rogers TV Fredericton" banner.
Sport and community events round out the schedule. When Fredericton hosted the Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League National Championship at the Richard J. Currie Center in April 2024, the gold-medal games aired on RogersTV Fredericton. The channel is also part of the New Brunswick community television tradition of charity telethons: in December 2024 a member of the Legislative Assembly rose in the House to congratulate the Minto and Chipman food banks — communities east of the city, within the channel's wider zone — on a Christmas telethon carried on Rogers TV channel 10 that had raised $23,701 for Minto and $26,825 for Chipman. As across the network, residents and community groups can apply to develop programs of their own; proposals are reviewed at the station level for production capability, community involvement and uniqueness, and programming is made by a small staff working with volunteers and community partners.
Audience and Reach
Rogers TV Fredericton is available only to subscribers of the Rogers cable system in the Fredericton zone, on channel 10; it is not distributed by competing providers and cannot be received over the air. A 2020 CRTC decision, dismissing a carriage complaint from an independent New Brunswick community station, described Rogers as operating six different community channels in the province and distributing each in a separate region — the zone structure within which the Fredericton channel reaches its own audience and no one else's. Rogers does not publish audience ratings for individual community channels, and no Fredericton-specific viewing figures are released. Network-wide, Rogers TV reports serving more than 2.3 million cable subscribers in the regions where Rogers operates cable systems, a figure the service publishes for the whole network rather than as a measurement of any single channel's audience. The Fredericton channel's value is therefore local reflection: it is the only television service whose schedule is built around the capital region's own institutions, councils, businesses and community groups.
Digital Presence
The channel's digital home is its Fredericton section of rogerstv.com, which carries its show pages and program listings under the same structure used by every Rogers TV community. Programming from the New Brunswick service also circulates online: the Fredericton-area council meetings filmed for the channel are posted for on-demand viewing through the Rogers TV site, and some programming from across the network is available through the Rogers On Demand service. Because rogerstv.com is blocked to automated research tools, the fine detail of the Fredericton channel's current streamed offerings and any city-specific social media presence should be re-verified against the live site at publish time; the channel's continuing operation and its local productions are independently documented in the municipal, sporting and regulatory records described in this profile.
Ownership and Organisation
Rogers TV Fredericton is owned and operated by Rogers Communications through its cable division, as part of the Rogers TV network of English-language community channels; the French-language counterpart network is TV Rogers. Canadian community channels operate within a CRTC framework under which cable companies devote a portion of subscription revenue to community programming that is expected to reflect the local community, and in New Brunswick Rogers organizes that programming by zones aligned with its distribution licences — the structure the Commission approved when it amalgamated Rogers' Atlantic Canadian licences in 2014. Within the Fredericton zone, the station works to the network's model: a small professional staff supplemented by volunteers, community organizations contributing content, and residents able to propose access programming, all under Rogers TV's common branding and standards and regional management for the New Brunswick service.
Contact and Availability
Rogers TV Fredericton is found on Rogers cable channel 10 in Fredericton and the surrounding communities of its service zone, as part of the basic cable service; it is not available from other television providers. Program listings, show information and details on volunteering or proposing a program are published through the channel's section of the Rogers TV website, rogerstv.com/fredericton. The channel does not publish a general public business email address, and none is listed in this profile.
