About The Australian Pipeliner

The Australian Pipeliner

Overview

The Australian Pipeliner is the official magazine of the Australian Pipelines and Gas Association (APGA), the peak body for Australia's pipeline industry, and the sector's dedicated trade publication. Published quarterly in print with a daily news website at pipeliner.com.au, it reports on the construction, operation and maintenance of the gas transmission pipelines and related infrastructure that move energy around the country: major projects, pipeline technology and integrity management, equipment and techniques, regulation, and the people and companies of a small, specialised industry.

The magazine has, in its own billing, "been the voice of the industry since 1972", and its role is a formal one as well as a journalistic one: as APGA's official publication it chronicles the association and its members, and its team also produces the association's supporting references, including the annual APGA Directory Yearbook and the Major Pipelines Map of Australia. It is published today by Prime Creative Media, which acquired it from Great Southern Press in 2021.

History

The Pipeliner's origins lie with the association now known as APGA, founded as the Australian Pipeline Industry Association (APIA), for which the magazine became the official publication and industry record. By the magazine's own account it has been the voice of the industry since 1972. For much of its life it was produced in Melbourne by Great Southern Press, the specialist publisher founded by Barry Wood, whose partnership with the association shaped both businesses: former APIA president Jim McDonald recalled that in the late 1980s the association was small and its Pipeliner thin and monochrome, and that the idea of setting the magazine free as part of a viable printing business became the catalyst that put Great Southern Press on the road, with the Pipeliner as a core publication. Wood's interview-led style became the magazine's signature; McDonald remembered his interviews as telling the story of the industry through the careers of the people who built it.

Great Southern Press grew around the title, adding products such as Pipeline, Plant & Offshore (PPO), a daily news service for the pipeline and gas industries, the Journal of Pipeline Engineering and Pipelines International, and in time merging with John Tiratsoo's Scientific Surveys business to extend its reach internationally; announcing that merger, Pipeliner editor Scott Pearce observed that Tiratsoo had, in his words, "quite literally, wrote the book on pigging", and that the combination would take his technical expertise to a wider audience. Editors of the magazine in the Great Southern Press era included Scott Pearce, who edited it from 2006 to 2011 and documented the industry's history in its pages, and, later, managing editor David Convery.

In March 2021 the title changed hands. Prime Creative Media announced it would acquire The Australian Pipeliner from Great Southern Press as of 31 March 2021, together with Trenchless Australasia and the No-Dig event. The buyer knew the magazine well: Prime Creative Media's chief operating officer Zelda Tupicoff had previously been chief executive of Great Southern Press, and she said the publisher had long admired the contribution the publication had made to the gas sector. Great Southern Press chief executive Annie Ferguson said the publications and event could not be going to a better home. APGA chief executive Steve Davies welcomed the sale, saying the Pipeliner had a long history of providing the pipeline industry with the information, updates and innovations it needed to know, and that the association looked forward to working with the new publisher to ensure it was "better than ever in the years ahead". The magazine has remained APGA's official publication under Prime Creative Media since the acquisition.

Content and Coverage

The quarterly magazine combines interviews, project reports and technical articles with association news: profiles of industry figures, updates from major pipeline projects, detailed technical contributions from engineers and specialists, and coverage of APGA's convention, awards and Young Pipeliners Forum activities. Its associated products extend the coverage into reference publishing — the annual Major Pipelines Map of Australia, wallcharts associated with pipeline construction, the APGA Directory Yearbook carrying details of every association member, and licensing references for Australia's pipelines.

The website carries the daily flow of industry news between issues. Stories published in the spring of 2026 included reporting on methane management and data quality in high-flow gas pipelines, NOPSEMA's acceptance of an environment plan for Emperor Energy's Judith-2 appraisal well in the Gippsland Basin, McElroy's launch of a new pipe-fusion data logger, finalists for the 2026 ISTT No-Dig Awards, and coverage of exhibitors at the 2026 APGA Convention in Darwin. A marketplace of pipeline and construction equipment listings runs alongside the news, and the site promotes the publisher's related events, including the PNG Expo and International No-Dig, reflecting the trenchless-technology connection that arrived with the 2021 acquisition.

Audience and Reach

The Australian Pipeliner is written for the Australian pipeline industry in full: gas transmission pipeline owners and operators, construction contractors, engineers and integrity specialists, equipment manufacturers and suppliers, regulators, and the members of APGA, whose official publication it is. Quarterly print distribution reaches subscribers and the association's membership, and the website and newsletter serve the same community daily. No audited circulation figure for the title is published in the sources available, and none is claimed here; the magazine's standing rests on its official status with the industry's peak body and on a publishing history, on its own account, stretching back to 1972. The website displays its social follower counts in its footer — in the thousands for each of its channels when checked in October 2026 — which the title presents as its own figures.

Digital Presence

Pipeliner.com.au is the magazine's daily platform, publishing news, features and project updates, hosting the equipment marketplace, and carrying subscription and advertising information, with content also distributed through a LinkedIn page and the title's other social channels. The print magazine continues quarterly and is made available in digital form through the publisher's Issuu library, which listed The Australian Pipeliner's November 2024 issue among its current titles. Under Prime Creative Media the title sits alongside the publisher's other energy and infrastructure products — its PPO news service heritage, Trenchless Australasia and the No-Dig event — and its digital operation is integrated with the publisher's multi-title platform, including shared marketplace listings and event promotion.

Ownership and Organisation

The Australian Pipeliner is owned and published by Prime Creative Media, the Melbourne-based business-to-business publisher, which acquired it from Great Southern Press effective 31 March 2021, together with Trenchless Australasia and the No-Dig event. It remains the official publication of the Australian Pipelines and Gas Association, the industry's peak body, under the association partnership model the title has followed throughout its modern history. Prime Creative Media describes itself as Australia's largest independently owned B2B multi-platform publisher — its own characterisation — with mastheads across road transport, manufacturing, logistics, engineering, mining and resources, infrastructure, waste management and education. Editorial staff work within the publisher's multi-title newsroom structure.

Contact and Availability

The Australian Pipeliner is available online at pipeliner.com.au, where readers can follow daily industry news and subscribe to the quarterly magazine and newsletter; the APGA Directory and the Major Pipelines Map of Australia are produced by the same team. Advertising and subscription enquiries are handled through the website's advertise and subscribe pages. The publisher, Prime Creative Media, is headquartered at 379 Docklands Drive, Docklands, Victoria 3008, and publishes its switchboard number as +61 3 9690 8766 on its title websites.
