About APASport.az

APASport.az

APASport.az is an Azerbaijani-language sports news portal based in Baku, Azerbaijan, operated by APA Media Group. It is one of the country's pioneering sports publications: according to APA Group's own published history, the portal was established on 5 March 2007 and began operating as the first sports agency in Azerbaijan. It publishes fast, comprehensive sports news in Azerbaijani — Azerbaijani and world football above all, but also boxing, wrestling, judo, weightlifting and the rest of the country's strong Olympic sports — together with exclusive interviews, live match coverage, analysis, photo and video material. APA Media Group lists APASport.az among its main brands alongside APA News Agency, Lent.az, Vesti.az, Kulis.az and APA TV.

The portal's standing has been formally recognised within Azerbaijan: it has been named the best sports agency in the country by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, has received awards from sports federations for its coverage of competitions, and in 2012 was elected the best sports website by the Azerbaijan Sport Journalists Association. This profile is based on APA Group's published account, international reporting on the group, and the portal's own current output.

History and the APA group

APASport.az was established on 5 March 2007, in the period when its parent was expanding from a single news agency into a multi-brand media company. The parent, APA Media Group, began in 2004 with APA News Agency (Azeri-Press Agency); in 2012 its outlets were united under APA Holding, described by the company as Azerbaijan's first structured media holding; and in 2019 the holding was reorganised as APA Media Group. APASport was the group's specialist sports arm from an early stage, and it defined its mission, in the group's words, as spreading operative news across the different fields of Azerbaijani and world sport and preparing exclusive interviews with the interesting faces of the sports community.

The portal shared the fate of the group in August 2018, when the sites affiliated with APA Holding — APA itself, Lent.az and APA Sport among them — were suspended by the company after a mistranscription of a speech by President Ilham Aliyev in an APA report caused a public scandal. International reporting at the time recorded that the agency apologised but the sites were nonetheless shut down, and their later resumption returned APASport.az to publication. The episode is part of the portal's documented history and a reminder of the environment in which Azerbaijani media, including sports media within large holdings, operate.

Awards and recognition

APA Group's published account records that APASport.az has been elected the best sports agency in the country by the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan, that it has been awarded by various federations for covering their competitions, and that in 2012 it was elected the best sports website by the Azerbaijan Sport Journalists Association. These are the group's own statements of its honours and are reported here as such; they are consistent with the portal's longevity and prominence in its niche, where it is one of the few dedicated sports brands in the Azerbaijani language.

Football coverage

Football dominates APASport.az, as it dominates Azerbaijani sports attention. The homepage observed was led by the European campaigns of Azerbaijani clubs: Sabah's match against Borussia Dortmund, with the game's best player named and the club's head coach's reaction; Turan Tovuz's historic Champions League victory, covered with updates, and the strong public interest in Turan's match in Tovuz; and Qarabağ and Neftçi both fined by the AFFA, the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan, whose disciplinary committee's meeting the portal also reported. Turkish and European football receives extensive coverage — Bayern Munich against Arsenal with a television guide, Galatasaray's away match in France, Paris Saint-Germain's injury blow and coach Hansi Flick's admission that PSG are stronger than his side, Sergen Yalçın's official appointment in Turkish football — reflecting the large Azerbaijani audience for the Turkish game. The portal's football service includes TV listings (TV AFİŞA) telling readers which channel shows which match, a practical feature for its audience.

Beyond football: the Olympic sports

APASport.az's claim to be a full sports agency rests on its coverage of the sports in which Azerbaijan is internationally strong. Items observed included Azerbaijani boxers opening the world championships with victories and four boxers reaching European championship semi-finals; twenty-three Azerbaijani wrestlers set to represent the country at the world championships; judoka taking part in an international training camp and 506 judoka preparing to contest the ACF Cup; and Azerbaijani weightlifters returning home with nine medals from the European championship. Youth and development football also features: a FIFA U-15 World Championship squad announcement and an AFFA-BFF Category D coaching course. This breadth — boxing, wrestling, judo, weightlifting, athletics and more alongside football — matches the structure of Azerbaijani sport, where Olympic disciplines deliver a large share of the country's international medals and public interest.

The domestic game's full pyramid is covered, not only its summit. The homepage reported First Division results — victories for Qaradağ Lökbatan and Zəngəzur — a Youth League match in which Sabah's youngsters also faced Borussia Dortmund, a report on whether the Nakhchivan stadium would close for repairs, with information from Araz-Naxçıvan, and heavy public interest in Turan's home match in Tovuz, a reminder that Azerbaijani club football's geography extends well beyond Baku. Institutional football news — AFFA disciplinary decisions and fines, coaching courses run jointly by the AFFA and the Belarus federation, national youth squad announcements — completes a service that follows the sport from federation headquarters to regional grounds. For supporters of smaller clubs, who are poorly served by general portals that concentrate on the capital's big names, this lower-division and regional attention is a practical reason to read APASport.az.

Interviews, analysis and match reporting

The group's description of the portal stresses exclusive interviews and post-match access: online reportages on Azerbaijani clubs' matches in international competition and on the national teams at world and European championships, with the views of head coaches and team members after matches, accompanied by analysis and by video and photo material. The current homepage bears this out: coach and official voices are a staple of its headlines — Turan's Həsən Zeynalov explaining that the club's Champions League target is clear and that the project is not a one-day affair, and Ziya Rəcəbov stating that his squad was built to compete in the Champions League. The portal's own voice is primarily reportorial; its value lies in speed, access and completeness across the whole Azerbaijani sports calendar.

Language and audience

APASport.az publishes in Azerbaijani and serves the domestic sports audience and the diaspora. Within APA Media Group it is the specialist sports destination, cross-referenced with the group's general news brands. Its format — minute-by-minute updating headlines, updated-match markers, television listings, photo and video — is built for the portal and social-media environment that is now Azerbaijan's main channel for sports news, particularly around live match nights, when its homepage fills with developing coverage of Azerbaijani clubs in Europe.

Regulatory environment

The portal operates under Azerbaijan's Law on Media of 2022 and its Media Registry as part of a registered media group. Sports journalism is at one remove from the political pressures documented in Azerbaijani media, but the August 2018 suspension of the whole APA Holding stable — triggered by a political news error in the parent agency — demonstrated that group-level events can halt even a sports title's publication, and forms part of this portal's operating history.

What is not publicly documented

APA Group publishes the portal's founding date, mission and honours, and this profile relies on that account, attributed as the company's own. Independent audience figures for APASport.az, its dedicated staffing, and a separate editorial leadership record are not published in open sources and are not claimed here. The circumstances and exact duration of the portal's 2018 suspension are documented only in outline in international reporting.

Summary

APASport.az, established on 5 March 2007 as Azerbaijan's first sports agency and a main brand of APA Media Group, is a Baku-based Azerbaijani-language sports portal covering football in depth and the country's Olympic sports in breadth, with interviews, live match coverage, analysis and television listings. Recognised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and, in 2012, by the Azerbaijan Sport Journalists Association, it is one of the established specialist titles of the Azerbaijani online media market.
