About Puls 4
Puls 4
Puls 4 is an Austrian commercial television channel owned by ProSiebenSat.1 Media and operated by its Austrian subsidiary ProSiebenSat.1 PULS 4 from Vienna. It is a national general-interest channel, a full-service broadcaster carrying Austrian news, talk, entertainment, football and American series. As its name states, it positioned itself as the fourth Austrian-wide full-service television channel, behind ORF 1, ORF 2 and ATV. The channel began as the local Vienna station Puls TV, which launched on 21 June 2004. ProSiebenSat.1 took over the station in 2007 and relaunched it nationally as Puls 4 on 28 January 2008. It is a sister channel of ATV, ATV2 and Puls 24 within the same Austrian group.
Puls 4 is regularly described as Austria's largest private television channel, and supplier and group sources have called it the country's most-watched private channel. Its significance lies in how it was built. Rather than starting a channel from nothing, ProSiebenSat.1 bought a small Viennese broadcaster that already produced Austrian programmes for the group's German channels, and turned it into a national network using the group's existing sales, marketing and programme resources. The result was the second durable national private channel in Austria and the foundation of the ProSiebenSat.1 PULS 4 group that later absorbed ATV and launched Puls 24.
Origins as Puls TV in Vienna
Puls 4 began as a local Vienna television station called Puls TV. The channel's recorded launch date is 21 June 2004, and in its local form it broadcast regional programming around the clock, initially on cable. Crucially, Puls TV was already active as a producer for the Austrian versions of ProSieben and kabel eins, providing programmes such as ProSieben AustriaNews, Austria TopTalk and the daily breakfast show Café Puls. That production role meant the small station had newsroom skills, Austrian presenters and a working relationship with ProSiebenSat.1 long before it became a national channel. Café Puls, launched in this earlier period as a simulcast across the group's Austrian windows, survived the transition and became one of Puls 4's best-known daytime brands, alongside Puls 4 News.
Takeover by ProSiebenSat.1 and the national relaunch
In 2007 ProSiebenSat.1 Media took over Puls TV outright, buying the regional commercial broadcaster in a transaction announced in the summer of that year, subject to regulatory approval. The group then outlined plans to roll the channel out nationwide under the name Puls 4, deliberately positioning it as the fourth national network alongside ORF 1, ORF 2 and ATV. The published plan promised 12 hours of original programming a day, of which nine hours would be Austrian-originated content, built on four pillars: live magazine and news, live talk shows, live events, and movies and series, supported by a strong web and mobile presence. The relaunch was at first slated for 4 February 2008, but the owner brought it forward. With the addition of a nightly newscast, the station relaunched as Puls 4 on 28 January 2008, with launch-day programming from 6.00pm comprising news, talk shows, show news and the film Silent Witness. From that date it was available on digital terrestrial television, cable and satellite, and even on mobile television on the Austrian 3 network.
News and Austrian original programming
News has been central to Puls 4's claim to be a full Austrian service rather than a relay of German content. The new nightly newscast at launch grew into the Puls 4 News operation, and the group's Austrian newsroom later became the journalistic centre for the whole ProSiebenSat.1 PULS 4 family, including Puls 24. In 2012 the group hired the journalist and political scientist Corinna Milborn to host the political talk show Pro und Contra, and she subsequently became news director and relaunched the news department, building formats that made Puls 4 News a modest but established competitor to ORF news among younger viewers. Original entertainment formats documented for the channel include Austria's Next Topmodel, The Masked Singer Austria, the German version of Cutting It under the title Bis in die Spitzen, and the drama Edel und Starck. Programmes named in production reporting for the channel include Café Puls, Puls 4 News and the comedy format Sehr Witzig, together with highlight shows and international sports events.
Imported series and film
Around its Austrian originals, Puls 4 built its schedule on imported, mainly American, series, a model made possible by its parent group's programme library. Documented imports include long-running crime and drama series such as Bones, Castle, CSI: Miami, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: NY, NCIS, Law and Order and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, House, Sherlock and Fringe, together with family and catalogue titles such as ER, Family Guy, Dawson's Creek, Magnum, P.I., Miami Vice, Murder, She Wrote, Highway to Heaven and The Wonder Years. This mixture, Austrian live programming in the early evening and familiar American series in primetime, mirrored the strategy of ProSieben in Germany while keeping a strong local flavour, and it allowed the channel to compete for the younger audiences that advertisers value most.
Sport on Puls 4
Sport gave Puls 4 national visibility beyond entertainment. The channel's documented sports portfolio includes American football's NFL and European football in the UEFA Europa League, the UEFA Conference League and the UEFA Youth League. Production reporting for the channel specifically names the NFL and the UEFA Europa League among its highlight programming. In the Austrian market, where ORF 1 holds the biggest domestic and international properties and Servus TV built its brand on sport, Puls 4's football and NFL coverage positioned it as the private free-to-air home of regular live sport, complementing its news and entertainment offer and feeding content into the group's later news and sports coverage on Puls 24.
Ownership and the ProSiebenSat.1 PULS 4 group
Puls 4 is owned by ProSiebenSat.1 Media, the German media group, through ProSiebenSat.1 PULS 4 GmbH, described in company information as Austria's largest private television group. The group operates the four Austrian free-TV channels Puls 4, ATV, ATV2 and Puls 24, after acquiring the ATV group, an acquisition completed in stages following the 2017 contracts, with group summaries recording that ProSiebenSat.1 PULS 4 acquired ATV and integrated it alongside its existing channels. It also operates the Austrian programme and advertising windows of ProSieben Austria, Sat.1 Österreich, kabel eins Austria, sixx Austria, ProSieben Maxx Austria, Sat.1 Gold Österreich and kabel eins Doku Austria, producing local content including daily news for those windows. The group launched the free streaming service ZAPPN in 2017, later central to the Puls 24 launch, and describes a digital strategy built around its 4GAMECHANGERS brand and festival. Puls 4 itself broadcasts in 576i standard definition and 720p high definition.
Audience and market position
Puls 4 established itself quickly as the leading Austrian private channel by audience. Media Landscapes recorded a 3 percent market share for Puls 4 in 2015, ahead of ATV at 2.7 percent and Servus TV at 1.7 percent, in a market where ORF's combined share was still around a third of viewing and foreign channels took well over half. A 2017 supplier announcement called Puls 4 Austria's most-watched private television channel and noted that about 150 employees were involved in its production processes at that time. Industry analysis has described the outcome as a de facto duopoly: by 2017 ProSiebenSat.1, through Puls 4 and the acquired ATV, stood alongside ORF as one of the two dominant forces in Austrian television, and in June 2022 the group's channels, including Puls 4 and ATV, together reached 27.4 percent among viewers aged 12 to 49. Unlike ATV, Puls 4 has no statutory must-carry protection and must arrange its broadcasting independently, which makes its market position a purely commercial achievement.
Relationship to ATV, ATV2 and Puls 24
Puls 4 is the founding channel of its group and the platform from which the rest were built or absorbed. ATV, the older private channel, joined in 2017 and brought ATV2 with it. Puls 24, launched on 1 September 2019, was created as the group's dedicated news and live events channel and took over the group's concentrated newsroom role, while Puls 4 remained the general entertainment flagship. The channels share news production, with Puls 4 and ATV newscasts produced separately for editorial and competition reasons even after their newsrooms were integrated. For viewers, the family offers a clear ladder: Puls 4 for general entertainment and flagship Austrian formats, ATV for reality and reportage, ATV2 for films and series, and Puls 24 for rolling news.
Why Puls 4 matters
Puls 4 matters because it proved that a national Austrian private channel could be built sustainably inside a large group, after ATV's difficult independent years had suggested the opposite. Its formula of Austrian news, talk and entertainment formats wrapped around group-supplied series and sport created the template for private television in Austria, and its success made ProSiebenSat.1 PULS 4 strong enough to absorb its historic rival and to launch Austria's private rolling news channel. A note on sources is appropriate: the batch record for this channel gave its launch as 28 January 2008 and its predecessor acquisition in 2007, which the fuller record confirms, while the channel's own corporate history dates Puls TV to 2004. No website was recorded in the batch file, but the channel's established official site is puls4.com, as listed in its reference entries. Beyond the documented facts set out here, detailed current schedules and present-day ratings are not consistently published, and none have been invented.
