Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) is the statewide public media network of Georgia — a state-operated network of nine PBS television stations and 19 NPR radio stations headquartered in Atlanta.
Georgia Public Broadcasting is a noncommercial educational broadcast television and radio network serving the U.S. state of Georgia. It is operated by the Georgia Public Telecommunications Commission, an agency of the Georgia state government that holds the licenses for most of the PBS and NPR member stations in the state. Nine television stations and 19 radio stations carry its signals across almost all of Georgia, reaching into parts of Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
The network’s roots go back to May 23, 1960, when WGTV began broadcasting from the University of Georgia’s Georgia Center for Continuing Education — the license having been donated to UGA by Cox Enterprises. In 1965 WGTV merged with four stations owned by the State Board of Education to form Georgia Educational Television, later Georgia Public Television; license ownership moved to the Georgia Public Telecommunications Commission in 1982. The network entered radio in 1984, and in January 2004 it was rebranded Georgia Public Broadcasting.
GPB is headquartered at 260 14th Street NW in Midtown Atlanta, where its primary radio and television production facilities are also a hub of Georgia’s film and television industry. Its television stations are PBS members and its radio stations carry NPR, American Public Media, and PRX programming. The network is led by CEO Bert Wesley Huffman.
