About MDTV

MDTV

MDTV is an Indonesian national private television network based in South Jakarta, owned by MDTV Media Technologies under MD Entertainment. It officially took the MDTV name on 28 February 2025, when the network previously known as NET. was rebranded following MD Entertainment's acquisition of a controlling stake in its parent company. The underlying broadcaster is older: it began trial broadcasts as NET. on 18 May 2013 and launched officially on 26 May 2013. MDTV broadcasts in Indonesian in high definition, positions itself as a drama-led general entertainment network, and is presented by its owner as Indonesia's premier drama destination. Its official corporate website is mdtelevision.com.

The NET. Years: A New Kind of Indonesian Network

To understand MDTV, it is necessary to understand NET., because MDTV inherited NET.'s frequencies, network, staff base and audience, even as it changed the channel's name, owner and programme emphasis. PT Net Mediatama Indonesia was established in 2012, and in May 2013 the company acquired PT Televisi Anak Spacetoon, operator of Spacetoon Indonesia. On 18 May 2013, NET. began trial broadcasts using Spacetoon's terrestrial frequencies, while Spacetoon's own programming was restricted to pay television. The official launch followed on 26 May 2013. The founders of NET. were Agus Lasmono of the Indika Group and Wishnutama Kusubandio, the television producer who had previously helped build Trans TV.

NET. entered the market with an explicit alternative proposition, summed up in its slogan Televisi Masa Kini, Television of Today. Where the dominant networks relied on long-running sinetron, dangdut and broad family variety aimed at the largest possible audience, NET. targeted younger, urban, middle and upper-class viewers with higher production values, contemporary design and formats that treated its audience as digitally literate. Its early schedule mixed news presented in a fresh style, talk, comedy and lifestyle programmes, and it built an unusually strong presence on YouTube and social media for an Indonesian broadcaster of its time. Programmes most associated with that era include the talk and comedy formats Ini Talkshow and The Comment, which became reference points for a generation of younger Indonesian viewers and presenters.

Programming Identity Before the Rebrand

NET.'s programming strategy was to offer quality over sheer volume of hours. Alongside its talk and comedy successes, it scheduled drama, reality and imported series, revived children's animation in a Cartoon Network block from 15 December 2018 featuring shows previously shown on Trans TV, and carried major sport. It sponsored the football clubs Persija Jakarta and, simultaneously, their rivals Persib Bandung during the 2015 Indonesia Super League, an unusual double sponsorship announced on consecutive days in April 2015. From 2019 to 2021 it broadcast the English Premier League in Indonesia, succeeding TVRI under licence from Mola TV, before those rights passed to SCTV in 2021.

That breadth showed a network trying to be a full general service for its chosen demographic rather than an all-day drama channel. News, sport and live events sat alongside entertainment, and the NET. brand stood for presentation quality as much as for any single programme. The later MDTV emphasis on drama therefore represents a narrowing and focusing of the original NET. proposition under new ownership, not a continuation of exactly the same schedule. Programmes and programme names from the NET. era, including its NET. News bulletins, belong to the network's history; the present MDTV schedule should be judged on its own drama-led terms.

Financial Strain and the Road to Acquisition

NET.'s admired programming did not translate into financial security. Indonesia's free-to-air advertising market rewards mass ratings, and a network deliberately targeting a narrower, wealthier audience faced a persistent revenue challenge. The strain became public in November 2020, when NET. faced a Suspension of Debt Payment Obligation claim, known in Indonesia as PKPU, from Bambang Sutrisno. That claim was withdrawn on 4 December 2020 after NET. repaid a debt of 2.5 billion rupiah. A second PKPU claim, from PT Seribu Layar Sinema, was withdrawn in January 2021 following repayment of 13.7 billion rupiah. The parent company, by then PT Net Visi Media, listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange on 26 January 2022 under the ticker NETV, but the search for a strategic owner with content strength continued.

That owner arrived in the form of MD Entertainment, one of Indonesia's most successful film and television production companies, led by producer Manoj Punjabi. MD Entertainment was Indonesia's first publicly listed film production house and the producer behind major Indonesian films and long-running television drama successes, including the record-breaking film KKN di Desa Penari. For MD, acquiring a broadcast network offered distribution for its library and production pipeline; for NET., MD offered exactly what it lacked, a deep supply of popular drama content and an owner whose business was content rather than general media holdings.

Acquisition by MD Entertainment in 2024

In October 2024, MD Entertainment expanded into broadcasting by acquiring a 60.98 percent stake in NET.'s parent. Following the acquisition, Manoj Punjabi and his wife Shania joined the board on 10 October 2024. In a rapid sequence of corporate steps, Manoj, Shania and Dian Adhitama resigned from their respective positions as Director General, Commissioner General and Independent Commissioner on 5 November, and two days later Manoj officially announced the company's legal name change from PT Net Visi Media to PT MDTV Media Technologies, following approval at a shareholders' meeting. The company name change was formalised on 8 November 2024.

Subsequent shareholding disclosures show MD Entertainment's controlling position consolidated further, with PT MD Entertainment listed as holding just over 80 percent of MDTV Media Technologies in later company profiles, alongside smaller holdings by PT Karya Media and public shareholders. The listed company retains the NETV ticker, a reminder of its NET. origins, while operating as MDTV Media Technologies from MD Place on Jalan Setiabudi Selatan in South Jakarta. Manoj Punjabi serves as Main Commissioner, or President Commissioner, of the company, and has publicly committed to revitalising MDTV through strong, locally relevant content and a pipeline of new series intended to rebuild viewership and long-term value.

The Rebrand to MDTV on 28 February 2025

On 28 February 2025, NET. officially rebranded as MDTV. The old NET. logo, used from 2013, had appeared alongside the MDTV logo for on-air purposes during the transition until the full rebranding took effect. Technology reporting on the launch records that MD Entertainment used Imagine Communications' Versio integrated playout platform, in a fully redundant configuration with ADC automation, to bring the relaunched channel to air within about three months of the acquisition work. MDTV's vice president of technology, Bambang A. Nugroho, cited Imagine's track record with NET TV and in-region support as factors in the choice, along with the platform's reliability and ease of integration.

The rebrand was presented with a new positioning, described in company material as the most dramatic television in Indonesia and, in its programme publicity, as Drama Nomor 1, Number One Drama. That positioning is MDTV's defining editorial decision. Where NET. had spread its identity across talk, comedy, news, sport and youth entertainment, MDTV concentrates on scripted drama, drawing directly on MD Entertainment's production system, artist relationships and catalogue. For viewers who followed NET. for its talk shows, the change was substantial; for the new owner, it was the point of the acquisition, aligning the channel's output with the parent company's greatest strength.

Drama Programming Under MD Entertainment

MDTV's launch drama illustrates the model. The series Cinta Cinderella began airing on MDTV on 28 February 2025, launch day itself, in a 19.00 Western Indonesian Time slot, presenting a story of a conglomerate family full of intrigue and dark conspiracy. MD Entertainment's announcement of the series closed with the channel's drama slogan and placed the programme squarely in prime time, the slot where Indonesian networks compete most directly for household audiences. Later company planning highlighted further series intended to broaden engagement, including the anticipated title Istri Paruh Waktu in its forward content pipeline.

The channel has not become drama in every hour. Listings after the rebrand continued to show familiar general elements carried in the schedule, including comedy such as Waktu Indonesia Bercanda, the sitcom Tetangga Masa Gitu, animation including Adit Sopo Jarwo, infotainment and the crime magazine Fakta +62, which is listed among Indonesia's current flagship television news and magazine programmes. That mixture is typical of an Indonesian general network managing a transition: the new owner's drama fills prime time and defines the brand, while proven filler, comedy, animation and magazine programmes sustain the rest of the day. The honest summary is that MDTV is a general entertainment network with an unusually explicit drama-first strategy, not a single-genre channel.

Company, Ownership and Headquarters

The broadcaster is PT MDTV Media Televisi, owned by MDTV Media Technologies and Industri Mitra Media, with MD Entertainment as parent. Its headquarters are at MD Place, Jalan Setiabudi Selatan Number 7, South Jakarta. Key people in current listings are Halim Lie as President Director and Manoj Punjabi as Main Commissioner. The parent, PT MDTV Media Technologies Tbk, is a public company traded on the Indonesia Stock Exchange as NETV, originally established on 23 July 2004 as PT Putra Insan Permata, renamed PT Net Visi Media on 23 March 2017, listed on 26 January 2022, and renamed PT MDTV Media Technologies on 8 November 2024. Its business covers television broadcasting, content production, artist management and digital media.

That corporate history matters because MDTV is sometimes described as a brand-new channel of 2025. It is not. It is the continuation, under new control and a new name, of the broadcaster founded as NET. in 2013, which itself replaced Spacetoon Indonesia on terrestrial television, within a listed company founded in 2004. The February 2025 date is the correct launch date for the MDTV brand, as this directory records, but the network's frequencies, national distribution and institutional history all run through NET. to 2013. MDTV should also not be confused with MD-branded programme blocks of earlier years, such as MD Channel or MD Entertainment TV, which are listed as predecessors replaced by the present network in reference works.

Broadcasting and Availability

MDTV broadcasts nationwide in Indonesian in high definition, listed as 1080i, with digital terrestrial availability across Indonesia. In Greater Jakarta its digital terrestrial presence is listed across channels including 16, 34 and 40 UHF in multiplex listings, with full local details varying by area and multiplex. Programmes are also distributed through the group's digital channels and the mdtelevision.com corporate site, which publishes investor and programme information for MDTV Media Technologies.

From its 2013 launch as NET., a network admired for presentation and youth appeal but strained by the economics of free-to-air television, through debt claims in 2020 and 2021, a stock exchange listing in 2022, acquisition by MD Entertainment in October 2024 and rebranding on 28 February 2025, MDTV's history joins two different Indonesian media success stories: Wishnutama and Agus Lasmono's attempt to reinvent television presentation, and Manoj Punjabi's drama production empire. The present channel is the product of the second story built on the infrastructure of the first, and its progress as Indonesia's self-declared leading drama destination is one of the clearest tests in current Indonesian broadcasting of whether a single strong content specialism can sustain a national free-to-air network.
