About Elshinta TV
Elshinta TV
Elshinta TV is a local television station in Jakarta, Indonesia, broadcasting to the Jabodetabek metropolitan area. It is owned by Elshinta Media Group through PT Elshinta Jakarta Televisi, and it is the television arm of the Elshinta name best known nationally for Radio Elshinta, Jakarta's long-established news and talk radio station. Elshinta TV first aired as a trial broadcast on 24 August 2005 and was officially launched on 29 September 2014. Its slogan is Televisi Gaya Hidup Metropolis, Metropolis Lifestyle Television, and its programming focuses on social subjects: business, health, culture, education and variety entertainment for the capital's productive-age audience.
A long trial and an official launch
Elshinta TV's history falls into two distinct phases. The first was an extended trial period. A contemporary Jakarta blog, noting the arrival of a new local channel in April 2007, told readers to look for Elshinta TV on 35 UHF, predicted that its main programming would resemble its radio sister's news programming, and recorded that at that stage the station was broadcasting a trial service only in the late afternoon and evening, from 16.00 to 21.00. The station's logos changed several times during the trial years, with Indonesian Wikipedia recording a first logo used from 2005 to 2009, a second from 2009 to 2010 and a third from 2010 to 2013. During part of that period the station's recorded sister stations were the Emtek-group channels Indosiar, SCTV and O Channel, reflecting the Elshinta businesses' ownership history within the Salim and Emtek orbit in those years.
The second phase began on 29 September 2014, the date of Elshinta TV's official launch. For its official service the station used the frequency formerly used by Indosiar for the Jabodetabek area, 35 UHF, and it could be received across Jabodetabek using the transmitter antenna previously used by Indosiar at Joglo in West Jakarta. A university study of the station summarises the official station that resulted: a Jakarta local broadcaster on 35 UHF, which from June 2021 was to move its digital position to channel 42 UHF, focused not on drama but on social-issue programming, and available beyond terrestrial television by streaming.
Headquarters, coverage and carriage
Elshinta TV's headquarters are at Jalan Joglo Raya No. 70, Joglo, in West Jakarta, the same Joglo address associated with Radio Elshinta, while its studio is recorded on the third floor of Wisma Indocement on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman in Central Jakarta. Its broadcast area is Jabodetabek and its surroundings: Jakarta with Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi. Its analogue channel was 35 UHF. In the digital terrestrial system its service is listed on digital 43 UHF through the TVRI Joglo multiplex, with virtual channel 252, broadcasting in 576i standard definition. Indonesia completed its analogue switch-off in Jakarta on 2 and 3 November 2022, so, like every other capital station, Elshinta TV is now a digital-only terrestrial service.
Carriage and streaming
Carriage extends well beyond the terrestrial signal. Station listings record satellite availability on Nusantara Satu, IPTV carriage on MyRepublic, and internet television availability through Vidio and Dens.TV. The station can also be watched by streaming on its YouTube channel and through the Elshinta Mobile application, known as ELMO, as well as through several paid streaming television providers. Its live website is given as elshintatv.co.id/live. For a local station, that spread of outlets matters: the terrestrial licence defines its home and its obligations, but its actual audience increasingly meets it on a phone or a streaming platform, inside and outside the capital.
Programming: social issues without sinetron
The clearest description of Elshinta TV's programming comes from a Universitas Multimedia Nusantara study of the station. Elshinta TV's programmes, it records, focus on social issues such as business, health, culture and education, together with variety shows as entertainment, and viewers will not find drama series or television films, the sinetron and FTV that dominate much Indonesian commercial television, on the station. That is a deliberate editorial choice, and it aligns the television station with the informational character of the Elshinta radio brand, while presenting the material in the lighter, lifestyle form promised by its Metropolis Lifestyle Television slogan.
The programme titles recorded by that study show the range in practice. Bumbu Dapoer and Siap Saji and Kuliner cover cooking and food. Dokter Ku covers health. Jakarta-Jakarta and Jakarta-Jakarta Sepekan cover the capital itself, in daily and weekly forms. Teras Sore is an afternoon magazine, Risalah Iman a religious strand, Otoholic a motoring programme, Estyle a style programme, Jalan-Jalan Yuu and Ko Muter-Muter travel and out-and-about formats, Komunitas a community programme, Eselebriti a celebrity strand, Rumah Puppets a puppet programme for younger viewers, and an esport programme covers electronic sports. Together they describe a general local station built from useful, everyday subjects rather than fiction: what to eat, how to stay healthy, how the city is changing, where to go, what people in the community are doing, and how metropolitan life is lived.
Audience
Elshinta TV defines its target audience by working life. The station's target viewers are in the productive age category, fifteen to fifty years old, with diverse social backgrounds: students, university students, housewives, non-professional workers and professional workers. They are described as people who need quality, educational viewing in the middle of rapid digital technological development. That definition explains the schedule's balance. A fifteen-year-old student, a young professional and a parent running a household have little in common as a drama audience, but all of them can use health information, city information, food programmes, business coverage and educational content, delivered in a variety format that does not lecture.
The Elshinta name: from radio to television
The television station cannot be understood without the radio station whose name it carries. Radio Elshinta was founded in 1968 by Suyoso Karsono, known as Mas Yos, a retired Indonesian Air Force officer who had earlier run the Irama Records recording business, and it was named after his youngest daughter, Elshinta. It began as an amateur AM station playing a wide range of music, from jazz, classical and pop to Hawaiian music, and it passed later into the Salim Group's ownership, moving to FM as a music station with a growing number of news programmes, including relays of international broadcasters. On 14 February 2000 Radio Elshinta abandoned music entirely and became a news and talk station, the identity it retains, broadcasting news and talk around the clock and pioneering citizen journalism in Indonesia through listener reports during the unrest of 1998.
Elshinta TV is a different service from that radio network, lighter in tone, lifestyle-led and local to Jakarta, but it trades on the same public meaning of the name: an Elshinta service is expected to inform. Where Radio Elshinta's promise is continuous news and talk, Elshinta TV's promise, in its slogan, is the lifestyle of the metropolis, explained and explored. The two services share the Joglo base in West Jakarta and the Elshinta Media Group owner, and the television station's existence extended one of Indonesia's oldest private broadcasting names, first heard in 1968, onto a Jakarta television frequency first tested in 2005 and officially launched in 2014.
Ownership and independence
Elshinta TV's owner is recorded as Elshinta Media Group, operating through PT Elshinta Jakarta Televisi, and its television network status is independent: it is not an affiliate relaying a national network's schedule. Its licensing authority is the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, formerly the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, which regulates frequencies, while broadcast content in Indonesia is overseen by the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission. Its recorded historical sister stations, Indosiar from 2005 to 2013, SCTV from 2011 to 2013 and O Channel from 2011 to 2013, belong to its trial-era corporate history and should not be confused with its present position as the Elshinta group's own Jakarta television station.
Place in Jakarta television
Jakarta's local television sector includes JakTV, DAAI TV, KTV and Elshinta TV alongside the Jakarta services of every national network and the public broadcaster. Each local station occupies a distinct position: JakTV aimed upmarket at educated metropolitan viewers, DAAI TV carries the humanitarian and educational mission of the Tzu Chi foundation, KTV began in comedy and settled into lifestyle and city reference programming, and Elshinta TV offers lifestyle and social-issue programming under one of the most trusted news names in Indonesian radio. In a capital city where national television is produced on the same streets, a local licence only earns its audience by being useful about the city itself. Elshinta TV's health, food, business, culture, education and community programmes, made for productive-age Jabodetabek viewers and now delivered digitally and by streaming, are its answer to that test.
