About TVKU
TVKU
TVKU, short for Televisi Kampus Universitas Dian Nuswantoro, the Campus Television of Dian Nuswantoro University, is a local television station in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. Operated by PT Televisi Kampus Universitas Dian Nuswantoro and owned by Universitas Dian Nuswantoro, known as Udinus, it began as an educational campus broadcaster and grew into a general local station for Semarang while keeping education at the centre of its identity. It is headquartered on the Udinus campus at Jalan Nakula I No. 5-11, Building E, second floor, in Central Semarang, broadcasts in Indonesian, and serves the former Semarang and Pati residency areas. Since 2011 it has worked within the Suara Merdeka Network, linked to Suara Merdeka, the oldest and largest local media group in Central Java. Its slogans have included It's My TV and Saatnya Kita Jadi Bintang, and its educational motto is Menumbuh Kembangkan Ilmu Pengetahuan, Cultivating Knowledge and Science.
A campus television for Semarang
TVKU was established on the basis of Central Java Governor's Decree No. 483/116/2003, dated 13 September 2003, which granted permission to establish an educational television station managed by Universitas Dian Nuswantoro in Semarang, under the full name Televisi Kampus Universitas Dian Nuswantoro. The permission was renewed by Governor's Decree 483/12A/2005, dated 8 February 2005. Indonesian Wikipedia records the station as founded on 13 September 2003, the date of the first decree, with a first broadcast on 1 December 2004. The university was judged capable, in technology, software and human resources, of running regular broadcasts, not least because it had study programmes related to broadcasting, and the station was staffed from the start by young professionals.
The founding documents framed TVKU as an educational station with a strategic role: helping to educate the nation and offering alternative solutions to problems in society through quality programmes aimed at the right audiences. Its advocates argued that no genuinely educational station with a truly educational programme mix yet existed, making such a station an urgent need, and that Semarang, as Central Java's capital and a city of industry, trade, maritime activity, tourism, culture and education, needed one as much as anywhere. The station's mission phrase, to cultivate knowledge and science and technology, comes directly from that founding purpose.
From campus community channel to local station
TVKU first broadcast as a community television service limited to the campus environment, occupying early frequencies at 21 and 23 UHF. In November 2008 it obtained its broadcasting implementation licence, the IPP, and in 2010 it received permission from the Minister of Communication and Information Technology, under decision No. 15/KEP/M.KOMINFO/03/2010, as a private broadcasting institution for television broadcasting services, PT Televisi Kampus Universitas Dian Nuswantoro, with a broadcast area covering the province of Central Java. Those licences mark its formal transition from a campus experiment into a licensed private local broadcaster under Indonesian broadcasting law.
As public needs developed, TVKU repositioned itself as a local television station for Semarang as a whole rather than a community channel for the campus alone. Its frequency was raised to 49 UHF, giving a more stable and clearer picture, and Indonesian Wikipedia describes it as the only local television station in Semarang founded by a campus student group, supported by experienced technicians. University and thesis research on the station makes the same point about its distinctiveness: among Semarang's broadcasters, TVKU alone grew out of a university, and its target audience reflected that origin, covering students and young people as well as educators and parents.
Ownership, leadership and home on campus
The station is owned by Universitas Dian Nuswantoro, which has held it since 2003, with Suara Merdeka Network recorded as a co-owner and partner from 2011. Its licence holder and operating company is PT Televisi Kampus Universitas Dian Nuswantoro, and Indonesian Wikipedia lists Edi Noersasongko as its president director, a leading figure. The headquarters address places the station physically inside the university it serves, on Jalan Nakula in the Pendrikan Kidul area of Central Semarang, a short distance from the university's main Jalan Imam Bonjol campus. That location is more than administrative: TVKU functions as both a public broadcaster for the city and a working broadcast laboratory embedded in a university known for technology and creative-industry education.
Udinus itself is a leading private university in Central Java, based in Semarang, whose identity is built around technology and entrepreneurship. TVKU's presence fits that institutional profile. The station gives broadcasting and communication students a real station on their own campus, gives the university a public channel in its home city, and gives Semarang viewers a station whose schedule is shaped by an educational institution rather than by a national entertainment network. Research on Indonesian campus television places TVKU among a small group of university stations that moved beyond closed campus viewing, alongside examples such as Ganesha TV at ITB in Bandung, to become alternative viewing for the surrounding public.
Partnership with Suara Merdeka
From 2011, TVKU has networked and cooperated with Suara Merdeka Network, the media group built around the Suara Merdeka daily newspaper, described in station histories as the largest and first local media in Central Java. Under the cooperation, TVKU broadcasts local content prepared by Suara Merdeka as a vehicle for the aspirations of the newspaper's readers and of Central Java society. The partnership is visible in the programme list itself, which includes strands such as Arsip Suara Merdeka and Tajuk Suara Merdeka that draw on the newspaper's archive and editorial voice, effectively joining Central Java's oldest newspaper tradition to its university television station.
The Suara Merdeka link complemented rather than replaced TVKU's educational remit. Thesis research on TVKU's broadcast management describes a programme mix in which more than 70 percent of programmes were news and information, with the remaining roughly 30 percent made up of sport, religious and entertainment programmes of an educational character. The same research tradition treats the station as an alternative educational television service, an example of a campus station sustaining a public schedule for more than a decade in a market dominated by commercial entertainment.
An education-led programme mix
News and civic information anchor the schedule. The station's listed current programmes include Kabar Jawa Tengah, News Timez and BreaKiNg NeWS for news; talk and discussion formats such as Special Talkshow, Prime Topic, Semarang Face To Face, Sentilan Sentilun and Suwarga, meaning Voice of the Citizens; parliamentary strands including Ragam Parlemen, Berita Parlemen and Kabar Parlemen; and civic-education programming that has included Ganjar Mengajar and election-education cooperation. A study of local television and first-time voters examined TVKU's cooperation with the Semarang election commission on a student-council election education programme, Pemilos, designed to raise democratic awareness among high-school students aged 17 to 21 as new voters, an unusually concrete example of the station's educational mission applied to citizenship.
Around the news core sits a broad local magazine schedule. Listed programmes cover health, in Solusi Sehat and Bincang Medika; business and enterprise, in Ruang UKM Bersama Kimia Farma and Semarang Market Review; technology, in Iptek Talk; food, in Eat Post Like and Ngicip; profiles and personalities, in Top Profile and Famous To Famous; and Semarang life itself, in titles such as The Nation Of Semarang, Semarang Sisi Berita, Solutions Of Semarang and Mobilista Bank Jateng. Earlier schedules show the same breadth reaching back over two decades, from Campus On TV and Education Series to wayang kulit shadow-puppet broadcasts, music programmes and English-learning and technology strands carried in its years of cooperation with TV Edukasi. Programme names change across the years, but the mix of news, education, health, enterprise and local culture is consistent.
Networks, affiliations and independence
TVKU's affiliation history reflects the shifting alliances of Indonesian local television. It carried TV Edukasi, the national educational television service, from 2005 to June 2013 and again from July 2016 to February 2023. It was affiliated with City TV Network from 2010 to 2013, took services associated with Tempo TV, BeritaSatu and Jak TV in the early 2010s, and relayed RTV from 1 July 2013 to 30 June 2016. Since 27 May 2017 it has also carried MAJT TV, the station of the Grand Mosque of Central Java. From 1 February 2023, Indonesian Wikipedia lists TVKU as independent, while its enduring partnerships remain the Suara Merdeka Network, held since 2011, and MAJT TV.
Those affiliations served a practical purpose for a small educational broadcaster: they filled the schedule with educational and general content that a campus station could not produce alone, while its own local programmes carried its identity. The 2023 move to independence, two decades after its founding decree, marks the point at which the station's own local output and its Suara Merdeka partnership became its defining relationships rather than relays of Jakarta-based services.
Transmission, the Grand Mosque tower and digital broadcasting
TVKU's transmission history follows its institutional growth. It began on 21 and 23 UHF, moved to the clearer 49 UHF position as it became a city station, and broadcast long days in its analogue maturity, with hours recorded as 04.30 to 24.00 Western Indonesian Time until 2016. In January 2017 it began cooperating with the Grand Mosque of Central Java, Masjid Agung Jawa Tengah, and its transmitter moved to the mosque's Asmaul Husna Tower, the landmark minaret in eastern Semarang, a move that also underpinned the MAJT TV cooperation, under which the mosque's own station was prepared for trial broadcasts with TVKU's support, as Suara Merdeka reported at the time.
Since 2017 TVKU has also been watchable on digital terrestrial television, DVB-T2. Indonesian Wikipedia lists its current digital channel as 30 UHF, virtual channel 250, with a 720p high-definition picture format, after an earlier digital allocation on 28 UHF. Semarang's analogue services ended in early December 2022 under the national switch-off programme, completing the station's migration from its early campus frequencies to a digital channel receivable across its Semarang and Pati service area from its mosque-tower transmitter site.
Place in Semarang and Indonesian television
TVKU matters in Indonesian broadcasting as proof that a university station can sustain a full local service. Founded by decree in 2003, licensed as a private broadcaster by 2010, partnered with the region's leading newspaper group from 2011 and independent again from 2023, it has outlasted many purely commercial local ventures while keeping a programme mix in which news, information and education dominate. Its slogan history captures the balance it tries to strike, pairing the collegiate It's My TV and the aspirational Saatnya Kita Jadi Bintang, It's Time for Us to Be Stars, with a founding motto about cultivating knowledge.
For viewers, TVKU is Semarang's campus-born local channel: Central Java news, parliamentary and civic programmes, health and enterprise magazines, mosque-linked religious broadcasting and student-city culture, transmitted from the Grand Mosque tower and produced from Building E on the Udinus campus in Jalan Nakula. For the WorldNM directory it stands as Central Java's clearest example of educational television in the local-station era, a broadcaster that began with a governor's decree for a campus in 2003 and became a permanent part of Semarang's media landscape.
