About U Channel

U Channel

U Channel is an Indonesian Protestant Christian television channel operated by PT UCB Media as the Indonesian service of United Christian Broadcasters International, the international Christian broadcasting group known worldwide as UCB. It was first broadcast on 26 June 2006 and carries Christian teaching, worship and lifestyle programming in Indonesian, English, Mandarin and Batak Simalungun. Although regularly listed among Jakarta-based satellite channels, its headquarters are at the World Harvest Center in Taman Himalaya, Lippo Village, Karawaci, Tangerang, in Banten, within the Jakarta metropolitan region. Distributed free-to-air by satellite and through pay television and streaming, U Channel is one of the longest-running dedicated Christian channels in Indonesian broadcasting, and its history connects a Tangerang studio to a broadcasting movement that began in a Christchurch garage in New Zealand in the 1960s.

The UCB Movement Behind the Channel

U Channel's owner, United Christian Broadcasters, is an international Christian broadcasting and media group founded by Rhema Media in New Zealand. The group was started by Richard Berry, an evangelical Christian from Christchurch who, in the early 1960s, was inspired by the Ecuadorian Christian short-wave station HCJB to set up a radio station in his garage. That station became a permanent operation in 1976 and expanded throughout New Zealand, and the Rhema Media model was then used to establish UCB affiliates in Australia, the United Kingdom, other Commonwealth countries and beyond, until the group worked through affiliates in some twenty-five countries, operating radio and television stations and publishing Bob Gass's daily devotional The Word for You Today and its young-adult counterpart.

Indonesia's U Channel, also known as UCB Indonesia, is the television expression of that model in Southeast Asia's largest country. The parent group's wider television history includes a notable first: in July 2010 UCB in the United Kingdom, with the Yamgo mobile network, launched what was described as the world's first live Christian mobile television channel — an indication of the group's consistent strategy of carrying established Christian teaching onto each new distribution technology, the same strategy visible in U Channel's own progression from satellite to streaming in Indonesia.

Launch in Indonesia in 2006

U Channel began broadcasting in Indonesia on 26 June 2006. Its arrival came at a formative moment for Indonesian religious television: the country was a decade into its post-1998 broadcasting expansion, satellite dishes were spreading rapidly beyond the cities, and dedicated faith channels were emerging alongside the general entertainment networks to serve Indonesia's religious communities directly. As a Protestant Christian channel in the world's largest Muslim-majority country, U Channel's role was defined from the start as service to the Christian minority and to Indonesian-speaking Christians generally, rather than competition with mainstream entertainment broadcasting.

The operating company is PT UCB Media, and the channel's institutional home is the World Harvest Center at Taman Himalaya, Jalan Gunung Rinjani number 6, Lippo Village, Karawaci, Tangerang. That location places it in the heartland of the modern Indonesian evangelical and charismatic church world of western Jakarta and Tangerang, among the large congregations and Christian institutions that supply Indonesian Christian television with its teachers, worship and programme partnerships. From that base it has broadcast continuously since 2006, outlasting many Indonesian satellite ventures of the same era.

Multilingual Broadcasting

One of U Channel's most distinctive recorded characteristics is its language mix: Indonesian, English, Mandarin and Batak Simalungun. Indonesian is the channel's primary language and the language of its locally produced flagship programmes, giving it national intelligibility. English carries the international teaching programmes through which UCB's worldwide ministry relationships flow into Indonesia. Mandarin serves Indonesia's Chinese-Indonesian Christian communities, a significant constituency in Indonesian church life. Batak Simalungun — a language of the Simalungun people of North Sumatra — is the most striking entry on the list: the Batak lands of North Sumatra are one of the historic heartlands of Indonesian Protestantism, and broadcasting in a specific Batak language rather than only in Indonesian signals a deliberate ministry to a defined regional Christian community in its own tongue.

That four-language pattern reflects how Christian broadcasting in Indonesia actually works. The audience is at once national, diasporic and intensely local: a single channel may need to teach a Jakarta congregation in Indonesian in the morning, carry an American teacher in English at midday, and speak to a Simalungun family in North Sumatra in their own language by evening. U Channel's documented schedule is built on exactly that rotation between Indonesian originals and foreign-language ministry programmes.

Indonesian Programming

The channel's Indonesian-language originals anchor its identity. Embun Sepanjang Hari — Dew Throughout the Day — is a devotional programme hosted by Andy Otniel, Valentino Simanjuntak and others, produced in cooperation with Shine Initiatives. Good News is hosted by Daniel Hendrata and Debby Catharina, a husband-and-wife presenting team known in Indonesian Christian media, bringing a magazine-style presentation of the Christian message. Live Full Lives is led by Pastor Jimmy Oentoro, one of Indonesia's prominent pastors and leadership teachers, applying Christian teaching to the conduct of a full and purposeful life. Mukjizat — Miracles — is led by Pastor Darniati Pariadji and centres on testimony and the miraculous in Christian experience, a staple genre of Indonesian charismatic broadcasting.

These four titles map the main currents of Indonesian Protestant television: daily devotion to open the day, an accessible good-news magazine, pastoral teaching on life and leadership from a nationally known pastor, and testimony-based ministry. They are also the programmes that make U Channel an Indonesian channel rather than a relay: the faces, languages and church networks are those of Indonesian Christianity itself, produced from the Tangerang base for the national audience.

International Teaching Programmes

Alongside its originals, U Channel carries a slate of international English-language ministry programmes that connect Indonesian viewers to the global evangelical teaching world. Enjoying Everyday Life is the long-running daily programme of Joyce Meyer, the American Bible teacher whose practical teaching on everyday Christian living is distributed worldwide. Full Flame carries the evangelistic ministry of Reinhard Bonnke, the German evangelist whose mass campaigns were famous across Africa and Asia. Love, Marriage and Stinking Thinking is the marriage teaching of Mark Gungor, presented with the humour that made his Laugh Your Way to a Better Marriage material widely distributed. Running With Fire carries the ministry of Pastor Tak Bhana of New Zealand — a fitting inclusion given UCB's own New Zealand roots — while Completing Kaden and Cross Examine complete the recorded foreign-language slate.

This combination is characteristic of UCB's affiliate model internationally: local production for local relevance, wrapped around a shared core of proven international teaching. For Indonesian viewers, it meant that a single free-to-air satellite channel could offer both their own pastors and the international teachers their churches were reading and discussing, in some cases — as with Bonnke — figures who had preached in person to enormous Indonesian crowds.

Distribution: Satellite, Pay Television and Streaming

U Channel's distribution has rested on free-to-air satellite carriage, the platform on which it built its audience. Its current satellite listing is Telkom-4 at 4020 vertical with symbol rate 32727, receivable across Indonesia with C-band equipment. Earlier in its history the channel was also listed among the Indonesian services carried on the Palapa D satellite, the previous generation of Indonesian broadcast satellite capacity, before the migration of Indonesian channels to Telkom-4. Pay carriage places it on TransVision at channel 777, putting the channel into subscription homes that do not use their own dishes.

The streaming layer completes the modern picture: U Channel is available for live viewing through Vidio, Indonesia's major streaming platform, alongside the group's own online television presence, through which UCB services are streamed live internationally. The channel also maintains its public presence through its official website, Facebook, X and an official blog. For a ministry channel, that progression — satellite first, pay carriage second, free streaming third — mirrors the audience's own migration and keeps a 2006-vintage channel reachable on the phone screens where Indonesian viewing increasingly happens.

Place in Indonesian Christian Media

Indonesian Christian television is a small but durable sector, serving Protestant and Catholic communities that make up roughly a tenth of the national population, and it has historically been carried by satellite and cable rather than by the national terrestrial networks. Within that sector U Channel is distinguished by three things: its longevity, having broadcast since 26 June 2006; its institutional backing, as the television service of an international broadcasting group active in some twenty-five countries rather than a single local ministry; and its multilingual schedule, reaching from Mandarin-speaking urban congregations to Simalungun-speaking viewers in North Sumatra.

Its programme balance expresses the breadth of Indonesian Protestantism itself — devotional, pastoral, evangelistic and testimonial content sharing one schedule, Indonesian originals beside American, German and New Zealand teachers. In a broadcasting system dominated numerically by general entertainment and Islamic programming, U Channel has maintained a continuous, specifically Protestant Christian presence on Indonesian screens for two decades.

Continuing Service

U Channel's story is one of steady institutional continuity rather than dramatic relaunch. The elements recorded at its launch — UCB ownership, the World Harvest Center base in Karawaci, satellite distribution, Indonesian devotional production and international teaching — remain the elements that describe it today, extended by TransVision carriage and Vidio streaming as platforms changed around it. The devotional thread that runs through the whole UCB family, from The Word for You Today in print and radio to Embun Sepanjang Hari on Indonesian television, expresses the group's founding idea in its Indonesian form: that a daily, accessible word of teaching, delivered by the broadcast media of the day, can sustain a dispersed community of faith.

From Richard Berry's garage station in Christchurch, inspired by a short-wave broadcaster in Ecuador, to a satellite channel in Tangerang teaching in four languages, U Channel embodies the improbable geography of modern Christian broadcasting. In Indonesia it remains what it set out to be in June 2006: a dedicated Protestant Christian channel, Indonesian in voice and international in fellowship, available free to any household in the archipelago with a dish or a connection.
