About 106.4 Top FM

106.4 Top FM

Radio Top FM — broadcasting as 106.4 Top FM — is the regional station for the Munich-Augsburg metropolitan area and southern Bavaria, based in Fürstenfeldbruck. A station of the Amperwelle GmbH under managing director Robert Sterner, it plays "more variety — the best songs from four decades" in a pop-rock format for 25-to-55-year-olds, with news every half hour from the city, the region, Bavaria and the world. On air since 12 December 2005 in its current form — and since 19 May 1990 as Radio FFB 106.4 — the station reaches a technical audience of around 4.0 million listeners via FM and DAB+. Its domain (top-fm.de) is referenced in the Funkanalyse Bayern planning data but was not independently load-verified during research, so no official website is asserted here.

Overview

Top FM is the regional broadcaster for the economically strong greater Munich area: the districts of Dachau, Fürstenfeldbruck, Landsberg and Starnberg west of Munich, and Freising, Erding and Ebersberg east of the city. The pop-rock-oriented format targets 25-to-55-year-olds with entertainment and regionally relevant information; listeners are informed of current events every half hour, and numerous service features cater to the audience's high standards for quality of life and leisure. The claim is "Mehr Abwechslung – Die besten Songs aus vier Jahrzehnten!" The station is privately owned and advertising-financed, a member of the Bayern Funkpaket / Studio Gong advertising combinations, with national/regional ad sales through Studio Gong.

History

Radio Top FM emerged from Radio FFB 106.4, which began broadcasting on 19 May 1990 as an oldies and rock station — with RTL Radio's oldies programme filling the 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. hours. From 2001 it was called Radio 106.4, broadcasting around the clock on the Fürstenfeldbruck/Munich frequency. On 9 October 2002 the BLM tendered a third of the airtime; the award went to Imcom Immobilien und Medien GmbH & Co. KG, which gained voting rights in programme matters, and the station was restructured and renamed 106.4 Top FM.

Since 12 December 2005 it has broadcast as TopFM, with the music shifted toward more current hits; over time more rock and pop from the 1970s and 1980s returned to the mix. In October 2017 the districts of Ebersberg, Freising and Erding were added as a new sub-broadcast area with new frequencies — frequencies handed over by Rock Antenne, which in exchange took over M94.5 in Munich on 1 September 2017. Since then the programme has run under the name Radio Top FM. Since May 2022 the station has been receivable on DAB+ across the entire Alpine foothills region, giving it a technical reach of around 4.0 million listeners. The station gained nationwide recognition in connection with the allocation of press seats in the NSU trial.

Programming

The pop-rock format serves the 25–55 target group with variety from four decades, half-hourly news from the city, the region, Bavaria and the world, and extensive service features. Regional relevance is the programme's defining trait: the station positions itself as the regional broadcaster for the Munich area's districts, with entertainment and information tailored to an audience with high quality-of-life expectations.

Coverage & Audience

Top FM broadcasts on FM — 106.4 MHz (Munich West, Dachau, Fürstenfeldbruck), 89.8 MHz (Landsberg), 96.6 MHz (Starnberg), 87.9/88.8 MHz and 99.4 MHz (Erding, Freising, Munich Northeast), 95.0 MHz (Freising), 93.0 MHz (Ebersberg) — on DAB+ in the Munich multiplex (11C) and across the Alpine foothills since May 2022, in cable and as a worldwide livestream, 24 hours a day. The technical reach is around 4.0 million listeners.

Ownership

Radio Top FM is a station of the Amperwelle GmbH, based at Schöngeisinger Straße 11 in Fürstenfeldbruck, with Robert Sterner as managing director. The ownership history includes the 2002 entry of Imcom Immobilien und Medien GmbH & Co. KG with programme voting rights, approved by the BLM.

Digital Presence

The station operates a website and livestream (top-fm.de is referenced in official planning documents) alongside apps and social media channels including Facebook. The digital offering carries the regional programme, half-hourly news and service features to listeners beyond the FM footprint, serving the Munich-Augsburg region's audience on demand.

From Radio FFB to Radio Top FM

Radio Top FM's lineage goes back to Radio FFB 106,4, which began broadcasting on 19 May 1990 from Fürstenfeldbruck — in the early years an oldie and rock station, with RTL Radio's oldies filling the overnight hours from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. From 2001 the station called itself "Radio 106.4" and broadcast around the clock. On 9 October 2002 the BLM tendered one third of the airtime; the winner was Imcom Immobilien und Medien GmbH & Co. KG, which gained voting rights on programme matters and restructured the station into 106.4 Top FM. On 12 December 2005 the station relaunched as TopFM with a shift toward more current hits. The station gained nationwide recognition in connection with the accreditation of press seats at the NSU trial. In October 2017 the districts of Ebersberg, Freising and Erding became a new partial coverage area with new frequencies — since then the programme has run under the name "Radio Top FM". On 1 September 2017 Top FM took over the Erding, Ebersberg and Freising frequencies from Rock Antenne, which in turn took over M94.5 in Munich. Since May 2022 the station has been receivable via DAB+ across the entire Alpine foothills region, giving it a technical reach of around 4.0 million listeners.

Frequencies, Format and the BLM System

Radio Top FM is operated by Amperwelle GmbH, based at Schöngeisinger Str. 11 in Fürstenfeldbruck; managing director Robert Sterner. The slogan is "Mehr Abwechslung – Die besten Songs aus vier Jahrzehnten!" ("More variety – the best songs from four decades"). The pop-rock format targets 25- to 55-year-olds, with news from the city, region, Bavaria and the world every half hour and numerous service segments on quality of life and leisure. FM frequencies: 106.4 MHz (Munich West, Dachau, Fürstenfeldbruck), 89.8 (Landsberg), 96.6 (Starnberg), 87.9/88.8/95.0/99.4 (Erding, Freising, Munich North-East) and 93.0 (Ebersberg); DAB+ in Munich on 11C. National and regional advertising is marketed through Studio Gong, and the station is part of the Bayern Funkpaket combos. Like all Bavarian private local stations, Top FM operates under the licensing and supervision of the Bayerische Landeszentrale für neue Medien (BLM) — the state media authority founded in 1985 and headquartered in Munich, which tenders frequencies, approves ownership changes and oversees the dense system of local and regional private radio that makes Bavaria one of Germany's most competitive radio markets.

Four Decades of Songs, Five Districts of Coverage

The slogan is "Mehr Abwechslung – Die besten Songs aus vier Jahrzehnten!" (more variety — the best songs from four decades). The programme is a regional station for the affluent Greater Munich area with the districts of Dachau, Fürstenfeldbruck, Landsberg and Starnberg in the west, and since October 2017 also Freising, Erding and Ebersberg in the east of Munich — when five former Radio Hitwelle/Rock Antenne sites in Erding, Freising, Ebersberg, Moosinning and Isen were added and the programme became "Radio Top FM". The station gained nationwide notoriety in connection with the allocation of press seats in the NSU trial. Since May 2022 the station has also been receivable via DAB+ throughout the Alpine foothills, giving it a technical reach of around 4.0 million listeners. It is the official broadcast partner of the Munich Cowboys American football team.

The Team and the BLM System

The morning show is Der Morgen auf 106.4 TOP FM mit Alex und Marlen (Alex Woldrich, Marlen Neuenschwander); daytime presenters include Romy Dieckmann, Carsten Michel, Daniela Heiß, Vera Fuchs and Andrea Koch, with newsreaders Sandra Haas in the morning and Brigitte Schek in the afternoon. The managing director is Robert Sterner; the station is based at Schöngeisinger Straße 11, 82256 Fürstenfeldbruck. With a pop-rock-oriented format it addresses 25- to 55-year-olds: entertainment and regionally relevant information are the priorities, with listeners informed every half hour about current events from the city and state, Bavaria and the world. Marketing runs through Studio Gong, which also holds 7.5% of Top FM (Radio FFB) — a Bavarian local-radio network stake.
