About 2BAB 92.7 FM Bay & Basin FM
2BAB 92.7 FM Bay & Basin FM
Overview
Bay and Basin 92.7 FM, call sign 2BAB, is a permanently licensed community radio station based at Sanctuary Point, on the South Coast of New South Wales. It broadcasts on 92.7 MHz FM and is licensed to serve the towns and villages around Jervis Bay and St Georges Basin: Vincentia, Sanctuary Point, Huskisson, St Georges Basin and Basin View, together with the surrounding villages. Reference listings describe its signal as receivable along the coast from Gerringong in the north to Ulladulla in the south, a considerably wider stretch of coastline than the immediate licence area.
The station is part of BCR Communities, the not-for-profit community organisation based at Sanctuary Point, and it is run by volunteer announcers who present original, locally produced programming. Its format is described as freeform, which in practice means presenters choose their own music and shape their own shows, rather than following a central playlist. Bay and Basin 92.7 FM is affiliated with the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA), and programs produced by other Australian community stations reach its airwaves through the Community Radio Network. The station's own website is 927fm.com.au.
History
The station's permanent licence dates from 2006. An Australian Communications and Media Authority record cited in reference listings shows licence 1150818 granted to Bay and Basin Community Resources Inc for the Sanctuary Point RA1 service area, pursuant to a decision dated 5 May 2006. Bay and Basin 92.7 FM first went to air in July 2006. Its call sign is a compressed version of its name and its geography: 2BAB stands for 2, Bay And Basin, the "2" being the New South Wales call sign prefix, and the Bay and Basin being Jervis Bay and St Georges Basin, the two bodies of water around which its communities sit.
Documentation from around the time of the station's establishment gives a picture of how small and volunteer-driven the operation was. In a submission to a House of Representatives inquiry into community broadcasting, Bay and Basin FM described itself as a small general interest station in the Jervis Bay region, with a population base for drawing volunteers of about 20,000 people, around 30 volunteers aged from 13 to over 75, and no paid staff. The same submission stressed the station's links with local community groups, naming schools, the Rural Fire Brigade, sporting clubs, support groups and the Lions Club, and described a very active outside broadcast practice, with volunteers taking live radio to local events. It also described how much of the station's effort went into training volunteers, who gained information technology skills, self-esteem and confidence from going on air. Reference listings connected with the station also note a later submission to Parliament concerning a power increase.
The organisation behind the station was formerly known as Bay and Basin Community Resources, and is now BCR Communities, which describes the station on its current website as "our own community radio station".
Programming and Content
An eclectic, freeform format prevails at Bay and Basin 92.7 FM. Because volunteer presenters select their own music, one hour can differ completely from the next, and the schedule reflects the tastes and interests of people who live in the area rather than a format designed elsewhere. Locally produced programs presented by volunteers sit alongside programs shared from other Australian community stations through the Community Radio Network, the CBAA's program distribution system, which allows a small station with a volunteer roster to keep a varied schedule on air around the clock. Reference listings describe the station as broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and webstreaming live.
A strong focus of the station is youth radio. It has partnered with local schools to provide youth radio and school-based radio programs, giving students in the Bay and Basin area the experience of making radio as well as a channel for school communities to hear themselves represented. That emphasis fits the station's volunteer history: its early volunteer base included presenters as young as 13, and one published account of a local youth mentoring program at Sanctuary Point describes a station volunteer presenter who played his favourite music twice a week taking part as a mentor.
Outside broadcasts are the station's other signature activity. Volunteers regularly take the station out of the studio to broadcast live from community events and fundraisers, a practice documented from its earliest years, when its outside broadcasts ranged from local group events to helping a children's long day care centre with a fundraiser. For a community station serving several small coastal towns rather than one city, that presence at local events is a core part of the service.
Audience and Reach
The station's intended audience is the community of the Sanctuary Point licence area: the residents of Vincentia, Sanctuary Point, Huskisson, St Georges Basin, Basin View and nearby villages, a group of settlements spread around the shores of Jervis Bay and St Georges Basin in the Shoalhaven area of the New South Wales South Coast. Its general interest programming is aimed at that whole community rather than at a single age group or interest, which is reflected in a volunteer base documented as spanning teenagers to people over 75.
Technically, the service is a low-power community transmission. Reference listings give its effective radiated power as 100 watts, omnidirectional, with transmitter coordinates at approximately 35.1 degrees south, 150.617 degrees east. Despite that modest power, listings describe reception from Gerringong to Ulladulla, along the South Coast corridor. Beyond the FM footprint, the station's live webstream makes it available to former residents, visitors and anyone else with a connection to the Bay and Basin area, wherever they are listening from.
Digital Presence
Bay and Basin 92.7 FM maintains its own website at https://www.927fm.com.au, which is the address given for the station in current reference listings. Reference sources describe the station as webstreaming live in addition to its FM broadcast, so listening is not limited to a radio within range of the Sanctuary Point transmitter.
The station's digital presence is also supported by its parent organisation. BCR Communities, at bcrcommunities.com, presents the station as one of its current services and maintains active Facebook and Instagram channels for the organisation's work across the Shoalhaven and Illawarra, through which its community activities, including the station, are promoted to local residents online.
Ownership and Organisation
Bay and Basin 92.7 FM is owned and locally managed by BCR Communities, formerly Bay and Basin Community Resources Inc, a not-for-profit charitable organisation based in the Bay and Basin region. BCR Communities says it has been part of the Shoalhaven and Illawarra for over 35 years, and describes itself as local, community-led and not-for-profit. Alongside the radio station, the organisation delivers aged care, National Disability Insurance Scheme supports, and youth and community services, supporting young people and families, people with disability and older members of the community to stay independent and connected and to live well at home.
That setting shapes the station. It is not a standalone commercial broadcaster but a community service inside a broader community organisation, staffed by volunteers rather than paid presenters, and it provides a route into volunteering in its own right: BCR invites local people to volunteer their time and skills across its services. The station's management is local, its announcers are drawn from the towns it serves, and its outside broadcasts and school partnerships are extensions of the parent organisation's wider community work.
