About 4Corners Images
4Corners Images is a London-based specialist travel picture library offering exclusive, premium travel, landscape, food and lifestyle stock photography. Owned and directed by Carlo Irek from its Chiswick base in West London, the agency represents more than a hundred professional travel photographers and licenses its tightly edited collection on both rights-managed and royalty-free terms to publishers, advertisers and designers in the UK and internationally. Particularly strong on Southern Europe — with what its founder calls one of the finest collections of contemporary travel pictures of Italy available anywhere — 4Corners has built its reputation on quality, creativity and a fiercely independent stance in the stock photography market.
Carlo Irek and the agency's origins
4Corners Images is the creation of Carlo Irek, its owner and director, who entered the picture-library business at the age of 19 after an early attempt to establish himself as a photographer. Working from Chiswick in West London, Irek built the agency as a young, independent alternative to the large generalist stock houses, concentrating exclusively on travel and travel-related photography of the world's most important destinations. In a 2010 interview with the industry title Photo Archive News, he described 4Corners as a relatively young agency whose marketing did not yet take care of itself — a candid admission that captured the character of a founder-led business competing on taste and curation rather than scale.
The agency's London office employed six full-time picture staff in 2010, with its IT and web development handled by a team in Italy — a transnational structure that reflected both the founder's European connections and the strength of the agency's Italian photography. Its premises are at Studio 58, 4 Spring Bridge Road, London W5 2AA, with contact on +44 (0)20 8811 1010.
An exclusive travel collection
4Corners specialises in high-quality, exclusive travel stock photography. Its tightly edited collection spans landscapes, cityscapes, food and drink, lifestyle and nature photography, all selected for quality and a distinctive contemporary style. The agency's own description of itself as one of the UK's leading picture libraries rests on the exclusivity of its material: images are not the interchangeable commodity of the microstock sites but carefully produced, art-directed travel photography.
The collection is especially strong on Southern Europe. Italy is the agency's signature territory, with deep coverage of destinations from the Amalfi Coast to Sicily, and the roster of contributing photographers includes many Italian names. The agency has also built significant coverage of Croatia — the islands of Pag, Krk, Brač and Hvar, Plitvice Lakes and Šibenik among them — as well as France, Greece, Spain and long-haul destinations including Brazil. Identified content gaps in 2010 included the UK and France, which the agency set out to strengthen.
The photographers
4Corners represents a large roster of professional photographers with expertise across travel, nature, food, lifestyle and landscape disciplines. The agency's published list runs to well over a hundred names, including Adam Eastland, Ben Pipe, Bruno Morandi, Gavin Gough, Kav Dadfar, Lisa Linder and Carlo Irek himself. Many contributors are destination specialists — photographers who return repeatedly to the same regions and build unrivalled local knowledge — and the agency commissions its photographers for specific assignment projects as well as licensing their stock.
The agency takes unusual care over the analogue heritage of its contributors' work. Irek has described scanning the archive of celebrated food and travel photographer Lisa Linder, much of whose work was cross-processed in ways difficult to replicate digitally — evidence of a curatorial approach that values the craft history of travel photography as well as its digital present.
Licensing and contributor terms
Images are licensed through the agency's website on both rights-managed and royalty-free terms, with extended licences and multiple-image purchase discounts available by negotiation. The agency's contributor terms are notably photographer-friendly: its 2020 welcome pack for new contributors states that 4Corners pays contributors an equal share of the revenues it earns, a straightforward fifty-fifty split that contrasts with the much smaller percentages offered by the large microstock platforms.
That stance reflects Irek's publicly argued philosophy of stock photography. Writing in Design Week, he defended professional creative photography against the microstock revolution, arguing that good photography, like good design, is worth paying for because a creative process stands behind it — and that the ease of digital distribution should not be mistaken for ease of creation. The agency's business model is built to embody that argument: premium, exclusive, tightly edited, and fairly shared with the photographers who make it.
News, features and assignments
4Corners maintains an active editorial front through its website's news section, publishing travel features and newly shot stories: a summer photographic expedition through Normandy, a walking tour of Syracuse in Sicily, coverage of the Rhône Valley, Oktoberfest in Munich, Christ the Redeemer in Brazil and autumn in the Alps. These features serve a double purpose — showcasing the collection to picture buyers and demonstrating the agency's continuing investment in fresh, commissioned travel photography.
The agency also undertakes commissioned assignments, offering clients the chance to brief its photographers on specific projects. For picture buyers with a defined destination or concept in mind, the agency can put a specialist photographer on the ground — an extension of the library into bespoke production.
The 2012 London Olympics and London coverage
As the eyes of the world turned to London for the 2012 Olympic Games, 4Corners launched a new online gallery of London imagery, promoted through the photo-industry press in February 2012. The move illustrated the agency's opportunistic editorial instincts: a travel library known for Mediterranean light turning its photographers' attention to its home city at the moment of maximum global interest. The gallery added contemporary views of the capital to a collection otherwise dominated by southern Europe.
Books, journals and the Etsy shop
In a diversification beyond licensing, 4Corners created a range of travel-themed journals and notebooks illustrated with its photographers' images — London, New York, California and Baja California, Berlin, Sicily and Italy editions, plus marine-themed and wildlife titles. Sold through a 4Corners Images Studio shop on Etsy, the pocket-sized books were aimed at travellers, sketchers and gift buyers. In March 2021 the industry title Photo Archive News ran a giveaway of the London journals to photo editors and researchers, a neat piece of marketing that put the agency's imagery directly into the hands of its professional audience.
Industry standing
Within the UK picture-library industry, 4Corners is recognised as a leading independent specialist. Its founder's interviews with Photo Archive News, its Design Week essay on the value of professional photography, and its regular presence in the photo-trade press mark it as an engaged, opinionated participant in industry debates — particularly the long-running argument between premium rights-managed libraries and the microstock platforms over pricing, quality and photographers' livelihoods.
The agency's independence is central to its identity: owner-managed, founder-led, with its own technology team and a direct relationship between the director and both photographers and clients. Irek's 2010 remark that he remained closely involved in everyday picture-sales decisions, spending much of his day editing new submissions and overseeing marketing, describes a hands-on model that larger agencies abandoned long ago.
