About 5USA

5USA is a British free-to-air television channel specialising in imported American movies and television programmes. Launched in 2006 as Five US, it is the US-entertainment arm of the Channel 5 family, the place where British viewers find long-running American crime dramas, Hollywood films and acquired series — all funded by advertising and available free on every major UK platform.

History and Launch

5USA was launched on 16 October 2006 as Five US, one day after its sister channel Five Life (now 5Star). It was the second digital terrestrial channel to be launched by RTL Group, the then owner of Channel 5, as part of a multichannel strategy designed to extend the Five brand beyond its single terrestrial channel. The channel's original broadcast hours were from 4:00 pm to 1:00 am, extending to start at noon in June 2007, and from 1 November 2015 it began broadcasting from 7:00 am until 3:00 am.

The early years of the channel had a distinctive flavour. British comedian Russell Kane was the "face of the channel", presenting short clips between programmes that acted as space fillers to comply with UK advertising regulations, which allow fewer minutes of advertising than US regulations. The music used during the pre-2009 idents was performed by Sufjan Stevens, featuring four of his songs: "The Dress Looks Nice on You", "Chicago", "Jacksonville" and "The Man of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts". On 16 February 2009 Five US was rebranded as Five USA, and on 7 March 2011 — following the sale of the Channel 5 group from RTL Group to Northern & Shell — it became 5USA. A further new logo and identity arrived on 11 February 2016, following the acquisition of the Channel 5 group by Viacom. In 2025 the main Channel 5 channel and its My5 streaming service were relaunched under the single "5" brand, with 5USA continuing as a distinct channel within the portfolio.

Ownership

5USA is owned by Channel 5 Broadcasting Limited, grouped under the Paramount Networks UK & Australia division. The channel's corporate history mirrors that of Channel 5 itself: launched under RTL Group, sold to Northern & Shell in 2010, acquired by Viacom in 2014, and now part of Paramount Skydance Corporation following the merger of Paramount Global and Skydance. It is the UK's only privately owned commercial public service broadcaster family, with Channel 5 holding a public service broadcasting licence renewed through the 2010s and 2020s. The channel operates alongside its sisters 5, 5Star, 5Select and 5Action, with a one-hour timeshift service, 5USA +1.

Programming and Flagship Shows

5USA concentrates on showing imported movies and programmes from the United States. Its schedule is built around long-running American procedural dramas, with the Law & Order and CSI franchises among its signature properties: the channel has at various times held first-run UK rights to series within these franchises, including Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and later series of CSI. Other staples have included NCIS, Criminal Minds, Castle, Bones, The Mentalist and House, alongside Hollywood films in peak time and late night.

The channel's programming strategy has always been to complement the main Channel 5 schedule: where Channel 5 focuses on British drama originals, premium factual programming and children's output from Milkshake!, 5USA is the destination for American acquisitions. The channel changes its programme slots and featured series from time to time, but the core proposition — US drama and movies, free to air — has remained constant since 2006. Its film output draws on the Paramount library and other Hollywood studios, giving viewers a regular supply of recent and classic American cinema without a subscription.

The stripped, long-running nature of 5USA's acquisitions is central to its appeal. Procedural dramas such as NCIS and Criminal Minds produce hundreds of self-contained episodes, allowing the channel to schedule dependable daily runs that viewers can dip into at any point — a model that has proved remarkably resilient even as on-demand viewing has grown. By keeping these series free-to-air, 5USA has ensured that some of American television's most successful franchises remain part of Britain's shared viewing culture rather than disappearing behind subscription paywalls, and its schedule continues to introduce new generations of viewers to the comfort of the case-of-the-week format.

News and Current Affairs

5USA does not carry news or current affairs programming; its remit is entertainment-led, focused on American drama and film. News for the Channel 5 audience is provided by 5 News, the ITN-produced bulletin on the main Channel 5 channel, which airs in the early evening. Viewers seeking current affairs output are served by the main channel's factual and news programming and by the 5 streaming service.

Audience and Ratings

5USA's audience is built around viewers who enjoy American procedural drama and Hollywood films — a broad, mainstream audience that has made the channel a consistent performer in the multichannel landscape. Industry presentations have cited the Channel 5 multichannel portfolio, including 5USA, as achieving around a 1.0 per cent share of viewing in the early 2010s, with the main Channel 5 channel recording a 4.4 per cent share. The channel's stripped schedules of long-running US series deliver dependable ratings in daytime and late peak, and its film premieres provide regular ratings spikes.

Broadcast and Streaming Availability

5USA is available free-to-air across the United Kingdom on Freeview (channel 21), Sky, Virgin Media and Freesat, with the 5USA +1 timeshift service on satellite and cable platforms. The channel streams live through the 5 streaming service (formerly My5), which relaunched in 2025 uniting broadcast and online under a single brand, and is available via Sky Go and Virgin TV Go. The channel broadcasts in standard definition on most platforms, with a high-definition feed available on Sky Glass.

Cultural Impact

5USA's significance lies in what it represents: the enduring British appetite for American television, packaged as a free-to-air service. At a time when US drama was migrating behind paywalls, 5USA kept long-running procedurals available to every household with a television, sustaining the mass audiences for franchises such as CSI and Law & Order in Britain. The channel also illustrates the economics of the multichannel era — a low-cost, acquisition-led service that extends a broadcaster's brand and advertising inventory without the expense of original commissions. Its survival through three changes of corporate ownership, from RTL to Northern & Shell to Viacom/Paramount, testifies to the durability of the model.

Sister Channels

5USA is one of five channels operated by Channel 5 Broadcasting Limited: the flagship 5 (relaunched in 2025 from Channel 5/My5), 5Star (documentaries, comedies and dramas for younger viewers), 5Select (documentaries, arts, dramas and comedies, originally launched as Channel 5 +24) and 5Action (action and crime programming, originally launched as Paramount Network in 2018). Beyond the Channel 5 family, the channel sits within the wider Paramount portfolio in the UK, alongside MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and the Paramount+ streaming service, whose biggest hits are sampled on the free-to-air 5 service.

Recent Developments

The most significant recent development for the Channel 5 family was the March 2025 relaunch of Channel 5 and My5 as a single unified "5" brand, supported by the biggest national marketing campaign in the broadcaster's history under the tagline "It's all on 5". The relaunch brought an expanded content offering drawn from Paramount's family of brands — including BET, CBS, Comedy Central and MTV Entertainment Studios — plus samples of Paramount+ hits, 15 new free live channels on the streaming service, and a wide range of box sets. Within this refreshed portfolio, 5USA continues its long-running role as the home of American drama and movies, its proposition unchanged since Five US first appeared on British screens in October 2006: the best of US television, free to every viewer.
