About Absolute Radio
Absolute Radio is Britain's home of "real music" — a national rock station whose lineage stretches back to one of the most famous launches in British radio history. Born as Virgin 1215 in 1993, when Richard Branson's voice crackled out of a Manchester megastore at a quarter past twelve, it became Absolute Radio in 2008 and has grown into a network of decade-themed digital stations united by a simple promise: great guitar music, personality-driven presenters and not a playlist algorithm in sight. Owned by Bauer Media Audio UK, it broadcasts on 1215 AM, DAB digital radio and online to millions of listeners.
The station's story is the story of independent national radio in Britain: a licence won against the odds, a famous fight for FM, a pioneering leap onto the internet, and a rebirth under new ownership that turned a single station into a family of brands. Its presenters — from Frank Skinner's Saturday morning show to Dave Berry's drivetime — are among the most distinctive voices in British music radio.
History and Launch
The station's origins lie in the second Independent National Radio licence, INR2, which would take over the 1197 and 1215 kHz medium wave frequencies being relinquished by BBC Radio 3. When the licence was advertised in October 1991, five organisations bid, with the highest cash bid coming from the Independent National Broadcasting Company of Sheffield at £4,010,000 a year. But the Radio Authority was not satisfied that company could sustain the service, and in April 1992 the licence was awarded to a TV-am/Virgin consortium bidding £1,883,000.
After TV-am lost its ITV franchise, its stake was sold in March 1993 to Apax Partners, JP Morgan Investment Corporation and Sir David Frost. The station launched as Virgin 1215 at 12.15pm on 30 April 1993. Richard Branson was the first voice heard, live from the Virgin Megastore in Manchester, with Richard Skinner the first voice from the London studios; the first song played was INXS's cover of "Born to Be Wild", specially recorded for the launch. The original line-up included Russ Williams, Jono Coleman, Mitch Johnson, Graham Dene, Nick Abbot, Tommy Vance, Emperor Rosko, Wendy Lloyd and Dave Fanning, with Chris Evans presenting a Saturday morning show, The Big Red Mug Show.
From before its AM launch, Virgin Radio campaigned for a national FM network. When the Radio Authority decided the 105–108 MHz band would go to local and regional stations instead, Virgin applied for and won one of the new London FM licences — launching on 105.8 MHz FM in London on 10 April 1995, beginning with a message from David Frost. In 1996 it launched its first website and began streaming, making it the first radio station in Europe available to listen to over the internet. On 29 September 2008 the station was renamed Absolute Radio, and today it is owned by Bauer Media Audio UK.
Ownership
Absolute Radio is owned and operated by Bauer Media Audio UK, part of the Bauer Media Group, one of Europe's largest commercial radio operators. Bauer's UK radio portfolio includes the Hits Radio network, Greatest Hits Radio, KISS, Magic, Jazz FM and Scala Radio, and Absolute Radio sits within it as the group's flagship rock brand. The station is advertising-funded and aimed at a commercially valuable audience of music-loving adults.
The rebrand from Virgin to Absolute in 2008 followed the station's sale and marked a deliberate break with the past: a new name, a new attitude and a renewed focus on rock music with personality. Under Bauer, the station has expanded from a single service into a family of digital brands while keeping its core promise — "real music matters" — at the centre of its identity.
Format and Programming
Absolute Radio's format is rock-oriented: a blend of new music and classic album tracks, presented with what the station calls "lashings of personality and mischief". Its licence originally described it as "a rock-oriented station combining new music with classic album tracks, aimed at 25-44 year-olds", and while the audience has broadened with age, the rock heartland remains — from classic rock anthems to contemporary guitar bands.
The schedule is presenter-led, with speech and humour woven around the music rather than segregated from it. Specialist strands, music documentaries and live sessions complement the daytime playlist, and the station's presenters are given what Bauer describes as "the freedom to say what they think and tell it like it is" — a deliberate contrast to tightly formatted hit-music radio.
Flagship Shows and Presenters
The station's best-known presenter is Frank Skinner, whose Saturday morning show has become one of the most acclaimed programmes in British radio, blending comedy, poetry, interviews and music with a devoted following. Dave Berry is another cornerstone of the schedule, while Jason Manford has brought his stand-up sensibility to the station's airwaves.
The station's presenting heritage stretches back to its Virgin days, when names such as Chris Evans, Jonathan Ross, Nicky Horne and Tommy Vance passed through its studios. The Absolute era has maintained that tradition of big, distinctive personalities — presenters chosen for character as much as for music knowledge, and encouraged to be themselves on air.
Broadcast Area and Frequencies
Absolute Radio broadcasts nationally on 1215 kHz AM — the frequency it has occupied since its 1993 launch — and on DAB digital radio across the UK, as well as online, through its official app, on digital television platforms and via smart speakers. For more than 25 years it also broadcast on 105.8 FM in London, but in May 2021 that frequency was transferred to Greatest Hits Radio following a format change approved by Ofcom; Absolute Radio continues on AM, DAB and digital platforms.
The station's national AM transmission gives it a genuinely UK-wide footprint on analogue radio, while its DAB carriage and online streaming have become the primary routes for most listeners. Its website, absoluteradio.co.uk, hosts live streams, podcasts and exclusive video content.
Audience and Ratings
Absolute Radio is one of the most successful digital-era commercial stations in Britain. In the last published RAJAR results before the London FM change, Absolute Radio London alone had 743,000 listeners with an average of 7.5 hours of listening per week — a strikingly loyal audience. Nationally, the station and its digital siblings have built a substantial combined reach.
Bauer has described Absolute Radio as "the original digital commercial radio innovator", noting that it is home to multiple top-ten digital stations. Its audience is predominantly adult, male-skewing and passionate about music — the kind of listeners advertisers prize for their engagement and spending power.
Digital and Streaming
Absolute Radio was a digital pioneer: in 1996 it became the first radio station in Europe to stream over the internet, and it has remained at the forefront of digital radio ever since. Its decade-themed sister stations were among the first successful digital-only spin-offs in British commercial radio, and the station's app, website and smart-speaker presence are central to its strategy.
The launch of Absolute Radio 20s in February 2020 — with Biffy Clyro as the first guests, joining presenter Danielle Perry — extended the family to cover every decade from the 1960s to the 2020s. The stations are available through the Absolute Radio app, smart speakers, the website and DAB in various regions, making the network a comprehensive jukebox of rock and pop history.
Cultural Impact
Absolute Radio's cultural significance begins with its launch: the moment Richard Branson's voice emerged from a Manchester record shop at 12.15pm on 30 April 1993 remains one of the most celebrated in British radio. The station's campaign for FM, its early internet streaming and its survival through ownership changes and rebrands tell the story of commercial radio's coming of age.
As Absolute Radio, the station has championed guitar music through eras when pop radio moved elsewhere, giving airtime to rock, indie and alternative music with a consistency few rivals can match. Its presenters' freedom to be opinionated and irreverent has made it a distinctive voice in a formatted medium, and its decade stations have created a new model for digital spin-off brands.
Sister Stations
Absolute Radio heads a network of digital decade brands: Absolute Radio 60s (launched 22 November 2011), Absolute Radio 70s (29 November 2011), Absolute 80s (4 December 2009), Absolute Radio 90s (21 June 2010), Absolute Radio 00s (10 December 2010), Absolute Radio 10s and Absolute Radio 20s (24 February 2020), plus Absolute Classic Rock (originally launched as Virgin Radio Classic Rock in 2000). Each serves a distinct generation of rock and pop fans, from sixties purists to tastemakers seeking the newest music.
Within Bauer's wider portfolio, Absolute Radio sits alongside the Hits Radio network, Greatest Hits Radio, KISS, Magic and Jazz FM, giving the group coverage of almost every mainstream music format.
Recent Developments
The most significant recent change was the May 2021 transfer of the 105.8 FM London frequency to Greatest Hits Radio, ending Absolute Radio's 26-year run on London FM and underlining the industry's shift towards DAB and online listening. Bauer framed the move as accelerating Greatest Hits Radio's growth while Absolute Radio continued to thrive as a digital-first brand.
The network has continued to expand its digital family, most recently with Absolute Radio 20s, and Bauer describes the station as a pioneer that has been innovating in digital radio for over a decade. From a Manchester megastore in 1993 to a multi-platform rock network, Absolute Radio's journey mirrors the transformation of British radio itself.
