About Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica
Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica
Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica (AMSS) is an international English-language journal of solid mechanics, published bimonthly in association with the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, Hubei, and distributed by Springer (ISSN 0894-9166). Its Latin-titled lineage begins in 1980, when the journal was founded in Chinese; an English version followed in 1988, and in 2007 the two separated into distinct journals, the English one inheriting the name Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica and an explicitly international mission. Springer describes it as a journal "focused on solid mechanics, providing original, perspective and even breakthrough theories and methods for the research in the area."
Origins in 1980
The journal's own thirtieth-anniversary foreword, published by the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, gives its history. "The Journal, with its Latin name Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica, was founded in 1980. It has been devoted to the publications of research papers in all fields of the solid-state mechanics and its related disciplines in science, technology, and engineering, with a balanced coverage on analytical, experimental, numerical and applied investigations." In its beginning years the journal published all articles in Chinese. The Latin name follows the convention of the Chinese Acta journals — Acta Mechanica Sinica, Acta Physica Sinica and their kin — through which Chinese learned societies presented flagship journals in the classical form of European academy publications. From the start, then, this was a society's journal for an entire discipline: not a university house journal, but the solid-mechanics record of China's mechanics community.
The English version and the 2007 separation
In 1988 an English version was created, and for two decades the two versions were cited in parallel as AMSS in Chinese and AMSS in English, with four issues per year for each version. The foreword records what happened next: "In 2007, the two versions became separated journals with different names and orientations. One is an international journal inherited the Latin name Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica (AMSS); another is a domestic journal received the same Chinese name as before with the English title Chinese Journal of Solid Mechanics (CJSM)." The separated journals expanded to six issues per year, AMSS in 2008 and CJSM in 2009. The aims diverged with the names: AMSS set out, in its editors' words, to become one of the world's best journals in solid mechanics, while CJSM emphasised solid-mechanics-related key engineering problems for a domestic readership. The 2010–2011 anniversary issues of both journals, carrying invited reviews and original papers from distinguished researchers worldwide, marked thirty years of the combined lineage.
Society and university: CSTAM and Wuhan
The journal belongs to the journal family of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (CSTAM), the national mechanics society founded in 1957 in the era of Hsue-Shen Tsien (Qian Xuesen), who founded Acta Mechanica Sinica the same year. Within that family, Acta Mechanica Sinica covers all of mechanics, the Journal of Hydrodynamics covers fluids, and AMSS is the solid-mechanics specialist. Its publication is associated with Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, one of China's leading engineering universities, giving the journal its base in central China's research community, and it is distributed internationally by Springer. The candidate record for the journal describes it as the English solid-mechanics companion within the society's journal family — a fair summary of a title whose society is Beijing-born but whose editorial home is Wuhan.
Scope: the mechanics of solids
Springer's aims and scope state that AMSS is "devoted to the publication of research papers in English in all fields of solid-state mechanics and its related disciplines in science, technology and engineering, with a balanced coverage on analytical, experimental, numerical and applied investigations." Solid mechanics is the study of how solid materials and structures deform, flow, fracture and fail under load, temperature and other fields. The journal's coverage, as set out in its profile, spans the discipline's classical core — elasticity and plasticity, the theories of recoverable and permanent deformation — and its damage sciences: fracture and fatigue, the initiation and growth of cracks under static and repeated loading. Around that core sit composite materials, whose layered and fibrous structures demand their own mechanics; structural mechanics, applying the theories to beams, plates, shells and engineered structures; and computational solid mechanics, the finite-element and newer numerical methods by which complex problems are actually solved.
Smart, bio- and modern materials
The journal's stated interests extend beyond the classical canon to the mechanics of smart materials — materials that sense and respond, such as piezoelectrics and shape-memory alloys — and of biomaterials, where mechanics meets living tissue and medical devices. Ranking and scope services profiling the journal note its centre of gravity in computational mechanics, mechanical engineering and mechanics of materials, and observe its evolution toward advanced materials and complex, model-based analysis, with purely conventional testing and simplified static analyses less prominent than they once were. That drift mirrors the discipline: solid mechanics now lives largely at the interfaces — with materials science, with computation, with biology — and a journal founded in 1980 on elasticity and plasticity has followed its field into those borderlands while keeping the classical subjects in scope.
Article types and rhythm
Springer records that AMSS publishes articles, short communications, discussions on previously published papers, and reviews, appearing bimonthly — six issues a year, the frequency the journal adopted in 2008. The inclusion of discussions is a marker of an older journal culture in mechanics, in which a published paper could be formally debated in print by other specialists, with the authors replying; the review and perspective content reflects Springer's description of the journal as a home for "original, perspective and even breakthrough theories and methods." Bimonthly publication through Springer's platform places the journal in the standard international circuit of institutional subscriptions and online access used by engineering libraries worldwide.
Indexing and standing
Journal-ranking records show the journal's coverage extending back to the early 1980s in the Chinese lineage, with the English journal classified in the second quartile of its categories in recent years — computational mechanics, mechanical engineering and mechanics of materials among them — and SCImago-style metrics crediting it with more than fourteen hundred documents and a growing citation total in the mid-2020s. Its standing rests less on any single metric than on lineage and role: it is the English-language flagship for solid mechanics of China's national mechanics society, continuously rooted in a journal founded in 1980, and one of the titles through which Chinese solid-mechanics research — historically strong, from a discipline organised nationally in the Tsien era — is presented to the world in English.
Relationship to Acta Mechanica Sinica
Readers occasionally confuse AMSS with Acta Mechanica Sinica, and the distinction is worth stating because the two share a society, a publisher and a naming convention. Acta Mechanica Sinica, founded in 1985 in its English series, covers all disciplines of theoretical and applied mechanics — solids, fluids, dynamics, biomechanics and interdisciplinary mechanics. Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica is the specialist: solids only, but solids in full depth, from elasticity theory to the mechanics of smart and biological materials. The two journals are complements within the CSTAM family, one generalist and one focused, and libraries in mechanics commonly hold both. AMSS's Wuhan association, against the Beijing gravity of the society, also gives the family a geographic spread across China's engineering universities.
Readership
The journal serves researchers in solid mechanics and its neighbouring fields: applied mathematicians working on continuum theory, materials scientists concerned with mechanical behaviour, civil, mechanical and aerospace engineers analysing structures, and computational mechanicians developing the numerical methods the field runs on. For Chinese authors it offers a society journal, in English, with an explicitly international ambition stated at its 2007 relaunch; for international readers it offers a bimonthly window on Chinese work in a discipline where China publishes at scale. Founded in Chinese in 1980, Englished in 1988 and relaunched as an international journal in 2007, Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica carries one of the longest continuous lineages in Chinese mechanics publishing.
