About Adithya TV
Adithya TV is a 24-hour Tamil-language comedy television channel owned by Sun TV Network, part of the Chennai-headquartered Sun Group. Launched on 8 February 2009, it was the first Tamil-language channel devoted entirely to comedy. Broadcasting in standard definition to India, Singapore and Malaysia, the channel combines original comedy programming — street shows, comedy clips, celebrity interviews and film-based humour — with comedy sequences drawn from the Sun network's extensive Tamil film library.
Launch and History
Sun TV announced the launch of Adithya TV in a statement to the Bombay Stock Exchange on 5 February 2009, and the channel went on air on 8 February 2009. The launch came amid a wave of interest in comedy as a television genre in Tamil Nadu: comedy segments on general entertainment channels were flourishing, and broadcasters were experimenting with standalone comedy services. Notably, Sun had launched a 24-hour comedy channel called Comedy Thirai in September 2008, but that service was aired exclusively on the Sun DTH platform; Adithya was designed as a wider-distribution comedy channel for the network's bouquet. The launch also coincided with reports that rival Kalaignar TV was planning its own comedy channel, signalling that humour had become a contested genre in the Tamil television market.
A First for Tamil Television
Upon its creation, Adithya TV was the first Tamil-language channel devoted to comedy, giving the genre a dedicated home for the first time rather than treating it as a segment within general entertainment schedules. The channel draws on Tamil cinema's deep comedic tradition — from the slapstick of classic films to the dialogue-driven humour of contemporary movies — and packages it into a 24-hour format. This positioning allowed Sun TV Network to monetize its enormous film library in a new way, repackaging comedy clips and sequences into compilations while also investing in original comedy shows and live events.
Ownership and Network
Adithya TV is owned and operated by Sun TV Network, established on 14 April 1993 by Kalanithi Maran as part of the Sun Group. It sits within the network's Tamil cluster alongside the flagship Sun TV, the movie channel KTV, the music channel Sun Music, the news channel Sun News, the children's channel Chutti TV and the classic channel Sun Life. Sun TV Network is among India's largest television broadcasters, with reports crediting it with a reach of more than 95 million households in India. The network's corporate website is https://www.suntv.in, which carries information about Adithya TV and the rest of the bouquet.
Konjam Nadinga Boss
The channel's signature programme is Konjam Nadinga Boss, a street-based comedy show hosted by anchor and mimicry artist Aadhavan. Aadhavan, who had worked as a radio jockey at Radio Mirchi and won the fourth season of Vijay TV's comedy reality show Kalakka Povathu Yaaru in 2008, was invited to join Adithya TV when the channel launched and came on board on 15 February 2009, spending more than a decade with the network. In Konjam Nadinga Boss, the host visits public places such as streets and asks ordinary passers-by to repeat famous dialogues from Tamil films in the same tone as the original actors, capturing their stumbles and the host's improvised reactions. Written and directed by Krishna Moorthy, the show was the first of its kind on Indian television and made Aadhavan a household name. Passers-by are sometimes also asked to sing a few lines of a song, and viewers were invited to upload their own dialogue videos to the channel's Facebook page for broadcast on television.
Other Programmes
Adithya TV's original programming includes Daddy Enakku Oru Doubt, Sollunganne Sollunga and Vaanga Sirikalam, alongside a wide slate of shows such as Comedy Galatta, Orupada Comedy, Anbudan Adithya, Comedy Ku Nanga Guarantee, Thaeneer With Adithya, Aanandham Ananthame, Vaanga Pazhagalam, Comedy Ungal Choice, Savalae Samali, Id Ai Vidadha Comedy, Natchathira Comedy, Valai Sirippu, Ada Dei, Jokkadi Live and Adithya Paarunga Sirichute Irunga. The channel blends these originals with comedy clips and sequences from Tamil films, anchored by presenters including VJ Lokesh and faces such as Doubt Senthil and Trichy Saravana Kumar. The mix of formats — talk, street comedy, clip compilations and celebrity-driven humour — keeps the schedule varied across the day.
Comedy Express Tour
In 2014 Adithya TV mounted its first comedy tour, titled Comedy Express, an on-ground event that took the channel's humour to audiences in four cities of Tamil Nadu: Madurai, Tirunelveli, Dindigul and Trichy. The tour featured live mimicry, double acts, magic shows, dance and comedy skits, and was presented as a gala event to build awareness of the channel's programming across Sun TV, KTV, Sun Music and Sun Life. Anchored by Aadhavan alongside the host of Daddy Enakku Oru Doubt, the tour was positioned as the flagship off-air property of Konjam Nadinga Boss and was telecast on 27 and 28 December from 6 pm. In 2015 the channel produced its own version of the song "Danga Maari" from the film Maari, combining the track with comedians from the industry.
Ratings and Performance
Adithya TV has reported a strong ratings performance within its genre, ranking fifth in BARC's top-five Tamil channel list. The channel's ability to compete in overall Tamil ratings against general entertainment channels reflects the appetite for comedy programming in the market. Industry discussions have frequently cited Adithya alongside Sun Music and KTV as standout performers within the Sun bouquet, with the comedy channel often described by viewers as one of the best in the Tamil comedy space. Its long-running presence since 2009 makes it one of the most established genre channels in South Indian television.
Distribution and Availability
Adithya TV is carried on all major cable networks and DTH platforms in India as part of the Sun Tamil bouquet, including Tata Play, Dish TV, Airtel Digital TV and Sun Direct. The channel also reaches overseas Tamil audiences: in Malaysia it is available on Astro on channel 214 (and on the NJOI platform), and in Singapore on StarHub TV on channel 158, with streaming via Astro Go. Sun Network has also made Adithya TV available on the YuppTV OTT platform for the Middle East and North Africa region, alongside channels such as Sun TV, KTV and Sun Music. The channel maintains active social media accounts on Facebook, X (Twitter) and Instagram under the handle adithyatv, and clips from its shows are distributed through the Sun TV YouTube network.
Role in Tamil Comedy Culture
Adithya TV's launch marked a turning point in how Tamil television treated comedy, elevating it from a supporting segment to a standalone genre with its own stars, formats and live events. The channel gave visibility to a generation of comedy presenters and mimicry artists, with Aadhavan's journey from radio jockey to television anchor illustrating the career paths the channel created. Its formats — particularly the participatory street comedy of Konjam Nadinga Boss — anticipated the interactive, user-generated humour culture that would later flourish on social media. The channel also engages in public initiatives: as of 2025, a panel drawn from Adithya TV and Vijay TV judges the annual talent shows organised for conservancy workers, reflecting the channel's presence in Tamil civic life beyond entertainment.
Online Presence and Contact
Adithya TV can be followed on Facebook, X and Instagram at adithyatv, and its parent network's corporate site at https://www.suntv.in carries information about the channel.
