About Advances in Aerodynamics

Advances in Aerodynamics

Advances in Aerodynamics (AIA) is a fully open-access journal of aerodynamics published by SpringerOpen since 2019. It is fully sponsored by the Chinese Aerodynamics Research Society, with the Computational Aerodynamics Institute of the China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center (CARDC) in Mianyang, Sichuan, as a society partner. The journal reports scientific and technological progress in aerodynamics across academic research, industrial development and engineering applications, publishing continuously online. Its first articles appeared in January 2019. Its print ISSN is 2097-3462 and its electronic ISSN is 2524-6992, and it is indexed in the Emerging Sources Citation Index and Scopus. Copyright in the journal is held by the Chinese Aerodynamics Research Society.

Launch and sponsorship

Advances in Aerodynamics was introduced in early 2019 in a SpringerOpen announcement presenting it as a new platform for fast publication of comprehensive studies on the frontier of aerodynamics. Its first published article appeared on 30 January 2019. The journal's sponsorship reflects the structure of China's aerodynamics establishment: it is fully sponsored by the Chinese Aerodynamics Research Society, the field's national learned society, and the launch announcement records that the journal was sponsored by the China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center, the country's principal aerodynamics research complex at Mianyang, with the editorial board administered at the society in Beijing. Springer lists the Computational Aerodynamics Institute of CARDC and the Chinese Aerodynamics Research Society as the journal's societies and partnerships.

Scope and subject coverage

The journal is dedicated to reporting scientific and technological progress in aerodynamics across academic research, industrial development and engineering applications. Its launch announcement defines the field in the classic way — the study of the motion of air, particularly the interaction between air and a solid body, such as flow around an aircraft — and invites work on new developments across all related research fields. The journal's published content illustrates the breadth of modern aerodynamics: hypersonic and re-entry flows, including DSMC modelling of rarefied ionisation reactions for hypervelocity spacecraft re-entry; scramjet isolator flow fields and shock-train behaviour, increasingly studied with deep-learning reconstruction methods; active thermal protection for wing leading edges behind strong bow shock waves; and applied problems such as droplet icing on microstructured surfaces. Fundamental, computational and experimental work all sit within its remit.

What the journal publishes

AIA welcomes review articles and original research papers presenting innovative studies in aerodynamic science and engineering. Its launch terms were specific about the mix it wanted: original research output, comprehensive reviews, innovative engineering applications and technical improvements in all fields of aerodynamics. Only papers with novelty and a significant contribution in aerodynamics are published, and all manuscripts go through peer review. The journal was also launched alongside a community commitment: an international symposium on advances in aerodynamics was to be organised regularly to provide opportunities for face-to-face discussion of ongoing developments, tying the publication to a recurring meeting of its research community. Its article DOIs sit in Springer's 10.1186 family, the prefix used across the SpringerOpen portfolio.

Editorial board and community

The launch announcement records that the editorial board is administered at the Chinese Aerodynamics Research Society in Beijing and has an international membership of renowned aerodynamicists from institutions worldwide. Springer lists the journal's editors-in-chief on its journal page. The author base visible in its pages reflects its home institution: a substantial share of its research comes from the China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center at Mianyang — papers on scramjet flow-field reconstruction and re-entry aerothermodynamics, for example, carry CARDC affiliations, including work associated with academician Le Jialing's group on intelligent reconstruction of scramjet combustion flow fields — alongside university authors from across China and international contributors. The journal thus functions as the English-language showcase of China's main aerodynamics research centre as well as an open international title.

Publishing model

Advances in Aerodynamics is a fully open-access journal published by SpringerOpen on a continuous-publication basis: articles appear online individually as they are ready, collected under annual volumes — its 2019 content is cited as volume 1, with the inaugural article numbered 1:1. At launch, AIA papers were made available open access without page charges to authors, an arrangement made possible by the society's full sponsorship of the journal; the sponsor relationship is stated on the journal's Springer page, which also records that the journal is fully sponsored by the Chinese Aerodynamics Research Society and that copyright rests with the society. Open access matters particularly in this field, where a meaningful part of the potential readership sits in industry and in research institutes without large subscription budgets.

Indexing and identifiers

The journal is abstracted and indexed in the Emerging Sources Citation Index and in Scopus, as recorded on its Springer pages. Its electronic ISSN is 2524-6992 and its print ISSN is 2097-3462. Emerging Sources Citation Index inclusion places the journal inside Clarivate's Web of Science discovery environment, the usual first step for a young journal building towards fuller citation indexing, while Scopus coverage puts its articles into the other major bibliographic system used for research evaluation. For a journal founded in 2019 in a specialised engineering field, securing both listings early was the essential infrastructure step, and its continuous publication since volume 1 in 2019 gives it an unbroken run for indexers and readers to follow.

The institutions behind it

Two Chinese institutions define the journal. The Chinese Aerodynamics Research Society is the national professional society for aerodynamicists in China, administering the journal's editorial board from Beijing and holding its copyright and sponsorship. The China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center at Mianyang, Sichuan — China's largest aerodynamics research complex, home to its major wind tunnels — is the journal's sponsoring research institution, and its Computational Aerodynamics Institute is named by Springer as a society partner of the journal. This pairing of the professional society with the national research centre gives AIA an institutional weight unusual for a journal of its age: it is less a commercial spin-off than the international journal of China's aerodynamics establishment.

Readership and role

The journal serves aerodynamicists in universities, research institutes and the aerospace industry: specialists in computational fluid dynamics, wind-tunnel experimentation, hypersonics, propulsion aerodynamics and flight-vehicle design. Much of China's aerodynamics output historically appeared in Chinese-language journals such as Acta Aerodynamics Sinica; Advances in Aerodynamics gives that community — and above all CARDC — an English-language, open-access outlet indexed in the international systems, through which work on topics like lunar-capsule re-entry flows or scramjet isolators reaches readers who cannot follow the Chinese literature. For international readers it is correspondingly a direct line into the current state of Chinese aerodynamics research, published by the field's own society rather than filtered through foreign journals.

Practical information

Advances in Aerodynamics is published by SpringerOpen at aia.springeropen.com, fully sponsored by the Chinese Aerodynamics Research Society with the Computational Aerodynamics Institute of the China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center (Mianyang) as society partner. Print ISSN: 2097-3462. Electronic ISSN: 2524-6992. It is fully open access and publishes continuously; all submissions are peer-reviewed, and the journal states that only work with novelty and significant contribution is accepted. The journal welcomes review articles and original research across aerodynamic science and engineering, from fundamental theory to engineering applications and technical improvements. Prospective authors should consult the submission guidelines on the journal's Springer page for current article-processing arrangements and formatting requirements.
