AL.com is Alabama's largest news website, operated by Alabama Media Group as part of Advance Local.
AL.com is the largest digital news site in Alabama and one of the largest local news sites in the United States. It is produced by Alabama Media Group and sits inside Advance Local, the local-media arm of Advance Publications — the privately held Newhouse-family company that also owns Condé Nast. The al.com domain dates to 1997, and the operation has been based in Birmingham throughout its history.
The site grew out of Alabama's legacy newspapers. In May 2012, Advance formed Alabama Media Group, folding The Birmingham News, The Huntsville Times, and Mobile's Press-Register into a digital-first operation under the AL.com banner. The three papers printed their final editions on February 26, 2023, after which the company went fully digital; its journalism now appears on AL.com and in The Lede, a daily electronic edition delivered to subscribers.
AL.com runs newsrooms in Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, and Montgomery, with roughly 75 reporters, editors, digital producers, and videographers working across the state. Coverage centers on breaking news, politics, investigations, sports — including Alabama and Auburn football — culture, and trending topics. In 2023 the outlet won two Pulitzer Prizes, for Local Reporting and Commentary, doubling its Pulitzer count within five years. Alabama Media Group also runs social brands such as "This is Alabama," "It's a Southern Thing," and the Southern news brand Reckon.
