Allgemeine Zeitung (Coesfeld)
The Allgemeine Zeitung is the daily newspaper of Coesfeld, the district town in the western Münsterland. Founded in 1834 — its first issue appeared on 5 July of that year — it is one of the oldest continuously published dailies in North Rhine-Westphalia, and it has been the leading newspaper of the Coesfeld district for generations. Published by the J. Fleißig publishing house from its offices on the Rosenstraße in Coesfeld, it appears Monday through Saturday with local editions for Billerbeck and Gescher, and it has belonged since the beginning of 2024 to the Westfälische Medien Holding — the Münster-based group behind the Westfälische Nachrichten — while continuing as a legally and economically independent publishing house.
Overview
The Allgemeine Zeitung is a subscription daily appearing Monday through Saturday, aimed at the households of Coesfeld, Billerbeck, Gescher, and Rosendahl in the western Münsterland. Coesfeld, a town of around 36,000 inhabitants, is the administrative seat of its district and a commercial center between Münster and the Dutch border. The paper covers this territory in the classic manner of the German local daily: the town councils and district administration, the schools, the courts, church life, the sports clubs, and the everyday business of a community whose newspaper has appeared since the Biedermeier era.
The paper's structure is that of a regional daily within the Zeitungsgruppe Münsterland, the newspaper group centered on the Westfälische Nachrichten. One publishing house, three titles: the Allgemeine Zeitung, the Billerbecker Anzeiger, and the Gescherer Zeitung inform readers daily about local, regional, and world events within the group's network. The local editors of the J. Fleißig publishing house work close to the events and close to their readers — the detailed local reporting is among the paper's most important strengths and has made it the leading daily of the Coesfeld district. Its sold circulation stands at 13,537 copies (IVW 2/2026, Monday to Saturday). Online, the paper lives at azonline.de, its digital platform, alongside its social media channels.
History
The paper's history begins on 5 July 1834, when its first issue appeared as the weekly paper of the districts of Coesfeld, Borken, and Ahaus. Through the 19th century — the German Empire, the Kulturkampf that shaped the Catholic Münsterland, and the industrial age — the paper grew with its region, becoming a daily and establishing itself as the newspaper of the Coesfeld district.
For most of its modern history the paper appeared in the J. Fleißig publishing house of Coesfeld and Rosendahl, a family company whose name became synonymous with the newspaper of the western Münsterland. The Fleißig editors' closeness to their readers — knowing the people, the places, and the events they report on — became the paper's trademark, and for years the Allgemeine Zeitung, the Billerbecker Anzeiger, and the Gescherer Zeitung have ranked among the five most successful dailies in North Rhine-Westphalia in circulation development. According to the Emnid institute, the titles reach more than 70 percent of the population in their distribution area daily — an extraordinarily high vote of confidence from readers.
A new chapter began at the turn of 2024. With effect from 1 January 2024, the Westfälische Medien Holding AG acquired the J. Fleißig publishing house, integrating the largest part of the Coesfeld district into its core distribution area. The managing directors Nina Ross and Detlev Ross left the company; Dennis Hagen and Marc Zahlmann took over as the new managing directors, together with the existing management team around publishing director Christoph Grote. The publishing house continues as a legally and economically independent entity under the umbrella of the Westfälische Medien Holding.
In March 2026 it emerged that the Rheinische Post Mediengruppe intended to expand its newspaper business by taking over the Westfälische Medien Holding — the owner of Aschendorff Medien, including the Westfälische Nachrichten and the Allgemeine Zeitung of Coesfeld. The Federal Cartel Office approved the takeover in April 2026, placing the 1834-founded Coesfeld daily within one of Germany's larger regional media groups while its local publishing house continues to operate independently.
Coverage and Content
The Allgemeine Zeitung's content follows the division of labor of the Zeitungsgruppe Münsterland. The group's network supplies the national and regional pages, while the local pages are the paper's calling card: detailed reporting from the town councils of Coesfeld, Billerbeck, Gescher, and Rosendahl, the district administration and district politics of Coesfeld, school and education news, court reporting, and coverage of the clubs, churches, and volunteer organizations that structure social life in the western Münsterland.
The paper pays particular attention to the economy of its region: the agriculture of the Münsterland park landscape, the mid-size industries of the district town, and the commuter economy that ties Coesfeld to Münster. The strongly Catholic character of the region — its church life, its festivals and customs — is a recurring subject, as are the schools and the sports clubs of the district's towns and villages.
The paper's advertising sections serve the local businesses of the Coesfeld district, and its classified and family-announcement pages remain among the most-read parts of the paper. The summer series and special reports — like the "24 Stunden Coesfeld" series that follows the town through a full day — showcase the paper's local reporting at its most ambitious.
Organization and Ownership
The Allgemeine Zeitung is published by the J. Fleißig GmbH & Co. KG of Coesfeld, based at Rosenstraße 2, 48653 Coesfeld. Since 1 January 2024 the publishing house has belonged to the Westfälische Medien Holding AG of Münster — the group behind Aschendorff Medien, the Westfälische Nachrichten, and the Zeitungsgruppe Münsterland — and it is run as a legally and economically independent publishing house under that umbrella. The managing directors are Marc Zahlmann and Dennis Hagen, with Christoph Grote as publishing director; the editor-in-chief is Detlef Scherle.
The paper appears with the local editions Billerbecker Anzeiger and Gescherer Zeitung, and it operates within the Zeitungsgruppe Münsterland's editorial network. Its sold circulation of 13,537 copies (IVW 2/2026) makes it the leading daily of the Coesfeld district, with a daily reach of more than 70 percent of the population in its distribution area.
Digital Presence
Online, the Allgemeine Zeitung is at azonline.de, its digital platform, where local reporting from Coesfeld, Billerbeck, Gescher, and Rosendahl appears alongside the regional and national coverage of the Zeitungsgruppe Münsterland. Readers can access the paper as an ePaper, and the paper's social media channels — including its Facebook presence — distribute local stories and engage the paper's readers.
The digital offering extends the reach of the Rosenstraße newsroom beyond the printed paper's circulation area, and the paper's online reporting — from council decisions to the "24 Stunden Coesfeld" series — gives the district's news a digital home. The publishing house describes itself, with its newspaper, its azonline.de platform, and its social media channels, as the leading media house of the Coesfeld economic region.
For the readers of the western Münsterland, the Allgemeine Zeitung remains the daily paper of their district: a newspaper founded in 1834, published for generations by the Fleißig family, now operating independently within the Westfälische Medien Holding. In a district where more than 70 percent of the population reads the paper daily, it continues the tradition that began with the first issue of July 1834 — a local daily whose editors know the people, the places, and the events they write about.
