AnOther (stylised from Another Magazine) is a British biannual fashion and culture magazine, published in London since its founding in 2001 by Jefferson Hack, the co-founder of Dazed Media. Blending high fashion and world-class photography with features on the arts, politics and literature, it quickly established a reputation for highly original content and became one of the most recognised biannual fashion magazines in the world, with cover stars including Rihanna, Julianne Moore, Nicole Kidman, Jodie Foster, Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams and Tilda Swinton.
Edited since 2016 by Susannah Frankel, and relaunched in 2020 as a combined title with its former men's edition AnOther Man, the magazine continues to set the fashion and culture agenda from its London base. Below is a detailed profile of the publication: its founding, editorial character, ownership, formats, landmark moments and digital presence.
AnOther Magazine was founded in 2001 by Jefferson Hack, who had already co-founded Dazed & Confused a decade earlier. Its launch heralded a new chapter in magazine publishing: a biannual that would treat fashion as culture, bringing together an emerging set of photographers, stylists and writers bound by a search for creativity and authenticity. Published twice a year from London, each beautifully crafted edition was conceived as a collector's item from the start.
The magazine's first editor-in-chief was Hack himself, who led the title from 2001 to 2015. From its earliest issues, AnOther distinguished itself by placing high fashion alongside serious writing on the arts, politics and literature — a blend that gave it intellectual weight unusual in the fashion press and attracted a roster of contributors that its publisher describes as second to none.
AnOther is a fashion and culture biannual aimed at readers who see fashion as inseparable from the wider creative world. Each issue is, in the words of its editor's letters, a six-month love affair with individuals, concepts, ideas and ideals — an obsession with the actors, musicians, artists and fashion designers who challenge preconceptions and take risks. Its pages carry major fashion editorials shot by world-class photographers, alongside features on art, film, music, politics and literature.
The magazine's cover stars have been among the most famous names in film and fashion: Rihanna, Julianne Moore, Nicole Kidman, Jodie Foster, Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams and Tilda Swinton have all fronted the title, reflecting its standing as a publication where Hollywood's leading figures want to be seen. The photography is central to the brand — each issue is built around ambitious, original image-making as much as around its writing.
AnOther is published by Dazed Media, the London-based independent media company co-founded by Jefferson Hack. Dazed Media's portfolio has included Dazed, AnOther, AnOther Man and the digital platform Dazed Digital, and the company has remained independently owned while growing into one of the world's most influential youth and fashion media businesses.
The magazine carries the ISSN 1355-5901 and has been published continuously from London since 2001. In 2020 Dazed Media announced that AnOther Magazine and Another Man would combine forces to create a single biannual print title addressing all gender identities and positioned at the heart of fashion and culture — a relaunch that sharpened the title's focus on creativity and culture as forces for change.
In November 2015, Susannah Frankel was appointed to take over the magazine as editor-in-chief, succeeding founder Jefferson Hack from 2016. Frankel had served as the magazine's fashion features director since its launch and had previously contributed to Dazed & Confused, Grazia UK and The Guardian — making her one of the few editors to have been present at a magazine's creation and then to lead it.
Under Frankel, the masthead has drawn on generations of longstanding Dazed Media contributors, with Hack continuing as editorial director, Marc Ascoli as creative director, Katie Shillingford and Ellie Grace Cumming as fashion directors, and Alexander Fury as fashion features director. Frankel has described AnOther as "a magazine with a soul, a magazine that celebrates beauty and the power of creativity to inform and inspire".
AnOther has a history of publishing firsts. In 2015 it became the first magazine to carry a high-definition LED moving cover — a genuine innovation in print. In 2016, to celebrate its 15th anniversary, the magazine commissioned holographic artist Rob Munday to create 1,000 limited-edition handmade 3D covers featuring Karl Lagerfeld, turning the anniversary issue into an instant collector's piece.
The 2020 relaunch, merging AnOther with AnOther Man, was another defining moment: Dazed Media framed it as a reset of values for a changed world, with the new combined title committed to the celebration of new ideas and the innovative expression of new values, serving as a manifesto for fashion's future. The Autumn/Winter 2020 issue, on sale from 1 October 2020, was the first of the new era.
The flagship UK edition of AnOther has published continuously since 2001. For much of its history it was joined by AnOther Man, the men's edition, which ran as a separate biannual before the two titles were combined in 2020 into a single publication addressing all gender identities.
The brand's international reach continues to grow: an AnOther China edition is launching, extending the title's fashion-and-culture formula to the Chinese market. The biannual frequency — Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter issues — has remained constant throughout, giving each edition the six-month gestation that the magazine's elaborate photography and long-form features demand.
AnOther is published twice a year, in Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter editions. The biannual rhythm is fundamental to its identity: each issue is a substantial, beautifully produced volume designed to be kept, with the publisher noting that every edition quickly becomes a collector's item. The large-format pages showcase the ambitious fashion photography that is the title's hallmark.
The production values — heavyweight paper, meticulous art direction under creative director Marc Ascoli, and covers that have included LED and holographic experiments — reflect the magazine's positioning at the luxury end of the fashion press. It is a magazine made to be looked at slowly, in contrast to the speed of digital fashion media.
AnOther's digital home is anothermag.com, which publishes fashion and culture content between the biannual print issues — news, features, fashion stories and coverage of the creative world, extending the magazine's agenda-setting role online. The site sits within Dazed Media's wider digital network, alongside Dazed Digital and the company's other platforms.
The brand is also active across social media, where its striking fashion imagery travels well, and its digital editions make the biannual available to readers worldwide. The combination of the collectible print object and a lively digital presence has allowed AnOther to maintain its influence through the transformation of fashion media over the past two decades.
AnOther has long set the fashion and culture agenda, in the words of its founder — one of the world's most influential media titles, with a roster of contributors second to none. Its blend of high fashion with serious writing on the arts, politics and literature helped define the biannual as a form: the luxury, intellectually ambitious fashion magazine that treats its readers as culturally literate adults.
The magazine's commitment to emerging photographers, stylists and writers has made it a launchpad for creative careers, while its covers — from Hollywood stars to fashion's most photographed faces — have become cultural artefacts in their own right. A quarter of a century after its 2001 founding, AnOther remains, in its publisher's phrase, a magazine with a soul: celebrating beauty and the power of creativity to inform and inspire.
The official website of the magazine is anothermag.com, where readers can explore the latest fashion and culture stories, view content from the biannual print issues, and find subscription information.
