About Antenne Münster
Antenne Münster
Antenne Münster is the commercial local radio station for the city of Münster in Westphalia, broadcasting a pop-based local format with city news, service information and entertainment. On air since 29 September 1991 — when it launched under the name "radio AM" with presenter Stefan Feldhof — the station is one of the established voices of North Rhine-Westphalia's local-radio system. It transmits on FM 95.4 MHz from the Münster telecommunications tower, on the local cable network, via internet live stream, and since July 2026 also on DAB+ digital radio. The operating company is owned 75 percent by the local newspaper publishers — the Westfälische Nachrichten and the Münstersche Zeitung — and 25 percent by the municipality through Stadtwerke Münster, giving the station unusually deep roots in the city's media and civic life. With an average of 32,500 listeners per hour on weekday daytime, it is a fixture of daily life in the Westphalian university city.
Overview
Antenne Münster serves a city with a distinctive character: Münster, the "bicycle capital" of Germany, a university city of more than 300,000 residents, the historic site of the Peace of Westphalia, and the economic and cultural centre of the Münsterland. The station's local programming mirrors that identity — city politics from the Prinzipalmarkt, university news, the cathedral and church life, the Preußen Münster football club, the "Münsterland" countryside around the city, and the dense calendar of festivals from the Eurocityfest to the Christmas markets. The music format is mainstream pop, a mix of current hits and familiar favourites designed as a broad-appeal daytime companion.
Distribution covers the city area comprehensively: FM 95.4 MHz with 160 watts from the Fernmeldeturm Münster, transmitted via the tower on Wolbecker Straße; the local cable network at 91.2 MHz; the internet live stream; and, since July 2026, DAB+ from the Münster telecommunications tower with 10 kilowatts, which significantly improved digital reception across the city. The studios were originally located on Kerstingskamp in Münster-Kinderhaus and have since moved to Nevinghoff in the Zentrum Nord business district. As a private-law broadcaster, Antenne Münster finances itself exclusively through advertising revenue — spot advertising, special advertising formats, sponsored programmes and event marketing.
History
Antenne Münster went on air on 29 September 1991 under the name "radio AM", with Stefan Feldhof as the first presenter to greet the city's listeners. It was part of the first wave of private local radio in North Rhine-Westphalia, launched under the state's two-pillar model with a local licence-holding association and a commercially run operating company. The ownership structure was distinctive from the start: the operating company's shares were divided between the local newspaper publishers — 75 percent held by the publishers of the Westfälische Nachrichten and the Münstersche Zeitung — and the municipality, with 25 percent held via Stadtwerke Münster, the municipal utilities. That structure, unusual in German private radio, tied the station institutionally to both the city's press and its civic administration.
Over the decades the station consolidated its position as Münster's commercial local radio, operating within the NRW system in which the Radio NRW framework programme supplies the non-local hours. In 2007 Stefan Nottmeier became editor-in-chief, a role he has held since. The station's management has been led by Peter Härtl, who simultaneously serves as managing director of the Münsterländische Medien Service GmbH & Co. KG (MMS) — the service company that also looks after the neighbouring stations Radio RST in the Steinfurt district, Radio WMW in the Borken district and Radio Kiepenkerl in the Coesfeld district, creating operational synergies across the Münsterland local-radio family. The studios' move from Kinderhaus to the Zentrum Nord district marked the station's physical renewal, and the launch of DAB+ transmission in July 2026 brought the station into the digital terrestrial era.
Programming
The broadcast day follows the established NRW local-radio pattern with a strong local core. Weekday programming centres on the morning show and afternoon drivetime with the station's own presenters, carrying Münster city news — council politics, urban development, university affairs, business news — alongside interviews with local figures, listener campaigns and event coverage. Hourly bulletins combine local headlines with national and international news, and half-hourly local news updates during peak times keep the city informed through the day. Service elements include weather and traffic for a city famous for its bicycle commuters and its congested ring roads, plus speed-camera reports.
Sport coverage features Preußen Münster, the city's traditional football club, alongside the university sports scene and the region's equestrian traditions. A notable cross-station feature is the Sunday programme with Philipp Böckmann, airing from 9 a.m. to noon simultaneously on Antenne Münster, Radio RST and Radio WMW — a shared production of the Münsterland station family. In line with North Rhine-Westphalian media law, the station's FM frequency also carries Bürgerfunk, the non-commercial citizen radio produced by local groups; in Münster this is organised through the medienforum münster e.V., the media participation association founded in 1986 that runs four production workshops and represents citizen broadcasters' interests vis-à-vis the station. Outside the local hours, the Radio NRW framework programme provides the music flow and networked content. The station's newsroom also feeds the group's digital platforms, and its reporters are a familiar presence at city-council meetings, university events and Preußen Münster press conferences — the daily journalistic routine that has kept Antenne Münster embedded in the city's public life for more than three decades.
Organization and Ownership
Antenne Münster is operated by a Betriebsgesellschaft whose shares are held 75 percent by the local newspaper publishers — the publishing houses behind the Westfälische Nachrichten and the Münstersche Zeitung — and 25 percent by the municipality through Stadtwerke Münster. The managing director is Peter Härtl, who concurrently leads the Münsterländische Medien Service GmbH & Co. KG (MMS), the service company supporting Antenne Münster and its neighbouring stations Radio RST, Radio WMW and Radio Kiepenkerl. Editorial leadership has been provided by editor-in-chief Stefan Nottmeier since 2007.
The station is financed purely under private law through advertising: spot campaigns, special advertising formats, sponsored programmes and event marketing. There is no public funding. Regulatory oversight lies with the Landesanstalt für Medien NRW, which licenses the station's FM frequency and, since 2026, its DAB+ distribution. The Bürgerfunk strand on the station's frequency is produced independently by citizen groups coordinated through medienforum münster e.V., which also houses the state office of the Landesverband Bürgerfunk NRW.
Digital Presence
The station's website at antennemuenster.de is the digital hub, offering the live internet stream, Münster local news articles, programme and presenter information, event tips and podcasts of selected features. The stream serves Münsterers living elsewhere and commuters beyond the FM area, while the website's news section functions as a compact city news portal. The station is listed on all major radio aggregator apps and smart-speaker platforms, and its DAB+ launch in July 2026 extended digital terrestrial reception across the city.
On social media Antenne Münster maintains active channels with city news updates, traffic information, programme highlights and coverage of Münster events from the city festivals to Preußen Münster matchdays. The station uses its digital platforms for listener interaction — requests, greetings, competitions — and for the event marketing that forms part of its revenue model. For a city station with an average of 32,500 weekday daytime listeners per hour, the digital offering of stream, website newsroom, social channels and on-demand audio completes a thoroughly modern local-media package rooted in the Münster studios at Nevinghoff.
