Anzeiger für Sternberg-Brüel-Warin
The Anzeiger für Sternberg-Brüel-Warin is the local edition of the Schweriner Volkszeitung for the Sternberg area, a small-town region in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and it appears as one of the SVZ's regional editions alongside titles for Parchim, Ludwigslust, Hagenow, Güstrow and the state capital itself. As part of the SVZ, the subscription daily for Westmecklenburg, it combines locally produced pages for Sternberg, Brüel, Warin and the surrounding Sternberger Seenland with the shared regional and national section produced in Schwerin. The paper appears Monday through Saturday and shares the digital infrastructure of the Nordkurier media group, into whose nordkurier.de portal the SVZ's online offering was integrated in 2024.
Overview
The Anzeiger serves a distinctly rural part of Mecklenburg: Sternberg, a small town of some four thousand inhabitants on the edge of the Sternberger Seenland lake district, Brüel and Warin, and the villages and small municipalities scattered between the lakes, forests and farmland of the region. Its readers find the program of the classic German local daily scaled to a small-town territory: the town councils and the district administration in Parchim, school and infrastructure questions, agriculture and the rural economy, the volunteer fire brigades, sports clubs and village associations, and the police and court reporting of the area. The tourism of the lake district, with its cycling routes, nature reserves and holiday homes, gives the paper a seasonal beat that larger regional papers cover only in passing.
As an SVZ edition the paper draws on the resources of a newspaper that sells 30,610 copies across Westmecklenburg, parts of the Prignitz and the Amt Neuhaus, a circulation that has fallen by nearly four fifths since 1998 but that still makes the SVZ the leading subscription daily of its region. The local pages are the paper's own; the Mantel, the state, national and international section, arrives from the Schwerin newsroom under editor-in-chief Gabriel Kords. The combination gives readers in Sternberg a complete daily paper whose local pages speak directly to their towns and villages.
History
The Schweriner Volkszeitung was founded on 10 April 1946, in the immediate postwar reordering of the press in the Soviet occupation zone, through the merger of the Volkszeitung of the KPD and the Volksstimme of the SPD, the forced press union that accompanied the creation of the SED. It became the SED district organ for the Bezirk Schwerin, the party's paper for the whole of what is today Westmecklenburg, and it held that position, with the monopoly such a role implied, until 1989. After reunification the paper was transformed into a commercially run regional daily, passing through the hands of Hubert Burda Media, the Schleswig-Holsteinische Zeitungsverlag and the medien holding:nord group before being sold in 2024, together with the Zeitungsverlag Schwerin, to the Schwäbischer Verlag, the publishing house of the Schwäbische Zeitung, which now operates it under the Nordkurier Mediengruppe umbrella.
The regional edition structure is the paper's answer to the geography of its territory: rather than one uniform paper for the whole of Westmecklenburg, the SVZ appears in editions tailored to its sub-regions, Der Prignitzer for the Prignitz, the Gadebusch-Rehnaer Zeitung, the Ludwigsluster Tageblatt, the Zeitung für Parchim und Lübz, the Hagenower Kreisblatt, the editions for Güstrow and Bützow and the state capital, and the Anzeiger für Sternberg-Brüel-Warin for the lake district between Schwerin and Güstrow. Each edition carries its own local section while sharing the Schwerin-produced Mantel, a structure that preserves local reporting even as the economics of the regional press have forced consolidation everywhere else.
Coverage and Content
The Anzeiger's local pages follow the life of a rural Mecklenburg small-town region in unusual detail. The town councils of Sternberg, Brüel and Warin, the Amt administrations that govern clusters of villages, and the Ludwigslust-Parchim district council in Parchim provide the political backbone; the paper reports their decisions on schools, roads, wind energy installations, village renewal and the perennial questions of rural infrastructure. The Sternberger Seenland, with its chain of lakes and its nature park, brings tourism and environmental reporting, from water quality to the development of cycling infrastructure, while agriculture, forestry and the crafts businesses of the small towns complete the economic picture.
The shared section from Schwerin covers the politics of the state capital, where the Landtag of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern sits, national and international news, business and sports. The paper's readers thus get the state politics that directly affect their region, the city of Schwerin is only some thirty kilometers away, alongside the wider world. Village life gets the attention it deserves in a region of small municipalities: the anniversaries of the volunteer fire brigades, the harvest festivals, the sports clubs' derby days and the church congregations' events are reported with the seriousness of major news, because for the paper's readers they are. The free weekly express, distributed to all households in the SVZ's core area on Wednesdays, complements the subscription daily with an advertising-financed offering, following the standard two-pillar model of the German regional press.
Organization and Ownership
The Anzeiger für Sternberg-Brüel-Warin is published by the Schwäbischer Verlag GmbH, the Ravensburg-based publishing house of the Schwäbische Zeitung, which acquired the Zeitungsverlag Schwerin from the NOZ/mh:n MEDIEN group in 2024. Within the Schwäbischer Verlag the paper belongs to the Nordkurier Mediengruppe, the northern division that also includes the Nordkurier of Neubrandenburg, the Norddeutsche Neueste Nachrichten of Rostock, the Lokalfuchs weekly, the mecklenbook publishing house and the Regio TV Nord and Regio TV Rostock television operations. The editor-in-chief of the SVZ is Gabriel Kords, and the managing director is Lutz Schumacher, who also leads the Schwäbische Zeitung.
This ownership history, from SED district organ through Burda, shz and NOZ/mh:n to the Schwäbischer Verlag, mirrors the consolidation of the East German regional press over three decades: each sale preserved the paper while integrating it into a larger group, and each group brought its own newsroom networks, printing operations and digital platforms. The Sternberg edition's local newsroom is the guarantee that this consolidation has not erased the paper's local face.
Digital Presence
The SVZ's online offering lived for years at svz.de and was fully integrated into the nordkurier.de portal in 2024, where Schwerin and the SVZ editions now appear as a regional section of the Nordkurier's digital home. Readers of the Anzeiger für Sternberg-Brüel-Warin find their local news there alongside the reporting of the other editions, with e-paper versions of the printed paper for subscribers, continuously updated news, photo galleries and the service content of a modern regional portal. The integration gives the small Sternberg edition a digital platform far beyond what its own circulation could support, carrying its local reporting to former residents and interested readers across Germany. Social media channels distribute the day's stories from the region, and newsletters keep subscribers informed between editions, completing the paper's transformation from a district party organ of 1946 into a contemporary local news service for the Mecklenburg lake district. For readers in Sternberg, Brüel and Warin, towns too small to sustain a daily paper on their own, the edition structure is what keeps a daily local paper on their breakfast tables at all. That is the quiet achievement of the SVZ's regional model: national consolidation in the background, local journalism in the foreground, six mornings a week.
