About Apollo Radio

Apollo Radio

Apollo Radio — styled "apollo radio)))" — is a private radio station from Saxony, on air since 22 November 2004, broadcasting a 24-hour specialty programme of classical music, film music, soul and jazz. The operator is the Sächsische Gemeinschaftsprogramm GmbH & Co. KG, a joint company in which all of Saxony's commercial radio broadcasters except Radio WSW participate, including BCS Broadcast Sachsen — the operator of Radio Dresden, Radio Leipzig, Radio Chemnitz and Hitradio RTL Sachsen — and the Regiocast group behind Radio PSR and R.SA. The station transmits in the Saxon cities of Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz and Grimma via low-power FM frequencies shared with local non-commercial stations, via DAB+ digital radio, and worldwide through its internet live stream. Despite its commercial status, Apollo Radio is practically advertising-free, positioning itself as a premium cultural product of Saxony's private radio providers.

Overview

Apollo Radio occupies a unique niche in German private radio: a commercially operated station dedicated entirely to classical music, film scores, soul and jazz — genres that public broadcasters normally reserve for their cultural channels. The 24-hour programme offers a sophisticated music mix aimed at culturally interested listeners in Saxony's three major cities and beyond, with presentation on weekdays and a voice-tracked service at other times. The station describes itself as a premium product of the private radio providers Radio PSR, R.SA and Energy Sachsen, and its near-absence of advertising gives it the uninterrupted listening experience more typical of public cultural radio.

Distribution is multi-layered. On FM, Apollo Radio shares low-power frequencies in Leipzig, Dresden and Chemnitz with local non-commercial stations: in Chemnitz with the university station Radio UNiCC and the community station Radio T, in Leipzig with Radio Blau, and in Dresden with the free radio ColoRadio — the non-commercial partners broadcasting weekday evenings from 6 to 11 p.m. and weekends from noon to midnight, with Apollo Radio filling the remaining hours. Because the FM frequencies have only short range, fill-in frequencies are used in parts of the cities. This shared-frequency model, born of the licensing decision to combine a commercial specialty service with community radio on the same channels, remains unique in German private radio: nowhere else do a classical-music commercial station and grassroots free radios alternate on the same FM frequencies day after day. Since 31 January 2018 the station has also been on DAB+ in Leipzig on channel 6C, with Chemnitz on channel 5B, Dresden on channel 8C and Freiberg on channel 10D added since, giving the programme robust digital terrestrial coverage across Saxony's population centres. The internet live stream extends reception worldwide.

History

In October 2003 the Sächsische Landesmedienanstalt, Saxony's state media authority, granted a radio licence to Apollo Radio, operated by the newly formed Sächsische Gemeinschaftsprogramm GmbH & Co. KG. The company's shareholders included BCS Broadcast Sachsen and the Regiocast Deutsche Radioholding, and in effect all commercial radio stations in Saxony except Radio WSW took part — a collective undertaking to fill airtime that the non-commercial stations could not cover on their own. The station went on air on 22 November 2004 with its classical, film-music, soul and jazz format, sharing its FM frequencies from the start with the free radios Radio Blau in Leipzig, Radio T in Chemnitz and ColoRadio in Dresden.

The frequency-sharing arrangement was tested in October 2009, when the operating company terminated the cooperation agreements with the three free radios, unwilling to continue covering their share of transmission and line costs — reported at 40,000 euros per year. The dispute highlighted the fragile economics of the shared-frequency model, though the fundamental arrangement of shared FM use continued. A new chapter opened on 31 January 2018, when Apollo Radio launched on DAB+ in Leipzig on channel 6C, freeing the programme from exclusive dependence on the low-power shared FM frequencies; DAB+ launches in Freiberg, Chemnitz and Dresden followed, establishing the station as a permanent part of Saxony's digital radio landscape. The management has been led by Tino Utassy, with René Thierfelder responsible for programming.

Programming

The programme is a 24-hour music specialty service built around four pillars: classical music, film music, soul and jazz. The classical offering spans the familiar repertoire and discoveries beyond it; the film-music strand draws on the great cinema scores; and the soul and jazz programming covers the classic eras of both genres. Weekday presentation guides listeners through the day with a cultured, unhurried tone, while voice-tracked segments maintain the service at other times. The near-total absence of advertising — remarkable for a commercial station — allows long, uninterrupted musical arcs.

The frequency-sharing partners shape the FM schedule: on weekdays the non-commercial stations take over from 6 to 11 p.m., and on weekends from noon to midnight, meaning Apollo Radio's FM listeners in Leipzig, Dresden and Chemnitz hear Radio Blau, Radio T, Radio UNiCC or ColoRadio in the evenings — a distinctive patchwork that has defined the station's terrestrial presence since 2004. On DAB+ and the internet stream, by contrast, the Apollo Radio programme runs uninterrupted around the clock. The station thus serves two audiences simultaneously: the FM listener who encounters it as part of a shared local frequency, and the digital listener who chooses it deliberately as Saxony's classical-and-jazz station.

Organization and Ownership

Apollo Radio is operated by the Sächsische Gemeinschaftsprogramm GmbH & Co. KG, the joint company of Saxony's commercial radio broadcasters. Its shareholders have included BCS Broadcast Sachsen — itself the operator of Radio Dresden, Radio Leipzig, Radio Chemnitz and Hitradio RTL Sachsen — and the Regiocast Deutsche Radioholding, the group behind Radio PSR and R.SA; all Saxon commercial stations except Radio WSW participate in the venture. The managing director has been Tino Utassy, who also leads BCS Broadcast Sachsen and Radio Dresden, with René Thierfelder as programme director.

The station's financing is unusual: as a commercial private broadcaster it is in principle advertising-funded, but in practice it broadcasts practically without advertising, sustained by its shareholder broadcasters as a prestige cultural offering. Regulatory oversight lies with the Sächsische Landesmedienanstalt, which granted the licence in 2003 and supervises the station's FM and DAB+ operations.

Digital Presence

The station's website at apolloradio.de presents the programme with its distinctive "apollo radio)))" branding, offering the live internet stream, programme information and the station's cultural positioning. The stream is the primary way many listeners encounter the station — particularly outside the limited FM footprints — and it continues seamlessly where the FM frequencies hand over to the non-commercial partners in the evenings. The station is listed on the major radio aggregator apps and smart-speaker platforms, and its DAB+ presence in Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz and Freiberg gives it full digital terrestrial distribution in Saxony's cities.

On social media Apollo Radio maintains a modest presence focused on the programme and its musical world. For a specialty station, the digital offering is proportionate: stream, website and app listings that make Saxony's classical, film-music, soul and jazz station available wherever its culturally inclined audience happens to be — a quiet premium corner of German private radio, on air since 2004. In a media landscape where commercial music radio increasingly converges on the same hit formats, Apollo Radio's two decades of uninterrupted classical, film-score, soul and jazz programming stand as a reminder that private broadcasting can sustain cultural ambition — even, and perhaps especially, when it is the commercial broadcasters themselves who choose to fund it.
