About Argus News

Argus News is a 24-hour Odia-language satellite news channel headquartered in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Launched on 15 May 2021, it is owned by Pratham Broadcast India Private Limited and Nilachakra Media Private Limited, and was promoted to satellite television by US Broadcasting India Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of the out-of-home advertising major US Advertising. The channel began life as a digital news operation — the Argus web channel — before making the leap to satellite television in a virtual launch ceremony conducted by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Operating under the tagline "Satyara Sandhana" (In Search of Truth), Argus News positions itself as Odisha's window to the world and the world's window into Odisha.

History and Digital Origins

Argus did not begin as a television channel. For several years before its satellite debut, it operated as an Odia digital news channel, building an audience on YouTube, Facebook and its website. At the satellite launch in May 2021, the channel's chief editor Sanjaya Jena highlighted the three-year journey of the Argus web channel — placing its digital origins around 2018, a date corroborated by regional media profiles that trace the digital start to April 2018. In that digital phase, Argus built a substantial social media following, with trade and regional press noting that its content and presentation style had won it millions of followers and a reputation for a distinctive editorial voice.

The move from digital to satellite reflected a broader pattern in Odia media, where successful digital news brands sought the wider reach and credibility of television. By the time of the satellite launch, the channel was already running as a web channel and was available on platforms such as Jio TV, giving it a ready-made audience for the television debut.

The Satellite Launch

Argus News was launched as a satellite television channel on Saturday, 15 May 2021, in a virtual ceremony conducted by Nirmala Sitharaman, the Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs. The choice of a Union minister for the launch underscored the channel's ambitions. The launch event was graced by Jnanpith awardee novelist Pratibha Ray and Padma Shri recipient Purnamasi Jani, two of Odisha's most distinguished cultural figures. The finance minister said she hoped the channel would relay the right information in a balanced manner to meet the critical needs of society.

The launch date placed Argus among a cluster of Odia channels debuting in mid-May 2021: the Sidharth TV Network launched Sidharth TV and Sidharth Gold on the same day, making 15 May 2021 one of the busiest single days in the history of Odia television.

Ownership and Corporate Structure

The channel is promoted by US Broadcasting India Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of US Advertising, described in trade press as an out-of-home (OOH) advertising major. US Advertising holds the broadcast licence for the channel, while day-to-day operations are handled by Pratham Broadcasting India. Corporate records cited by regional media name two owning companies: Pratham Broadcast India Private Limited and Nilachakra Media Private Limited. The directors associated with the companies are Sanjay Kumar Jena, Satish Kumar Goel and Amit Kapoor; Sanjay Kumar Jena is listed as managing director of Nilachakra Media Private Limited, with Lopamudra Jena as a director.

The channel's registered address is given as 4th Floor, Symphony Mall, NH-16, Rudrapur, Bhubaneswar, Odisha — with an additional listing at Plot No. 227/228, Kharavela Nagar, Unit-III, Bhubaneswar. The company's LinkedIn profile describes a privately held broadcast media operation with 201–500 employees, headquartered in Bhubaneswar.

Newsroom Leadership

The channel's chief editor is Sanjaya Jena, who led the editorial team through the digital-to-satellite transition and presented the channel's digital journey at the launch ceremony. The newsroom operates from the Bhubaneswar headquarters, with the channel's contact numbers 0674-2973292 and 0674-2973392 and email addresses including support@argusnews.in published for viewer and advertiser contact.

Programming

As a 24x7 news channel, Argus News carries rolling Odia news coverage spanning the state, the nation and the world, with the emphasis on Odisha. Its programming includes news bulletins, debates, special reports and current-affairs shows. The channel's digital-era presentation style — credited with building its large social media following — carried over to the television format, with differentiated programming that the channel says sets new standards for journalism in Indian news television.

Editorial Philosophy

The channel's tagline is "Satyara Sandhana," Odia for "In Search of Truth." Its stated philosophy is "inclusive journalism" pursued in the spirit of "Whatever It Takes," and it describes its mission as being "Odisha's window to all over the world and world's window into Odisha." At launch, the promoters and the launching minister alike stressed balanced, responsible journalism — Sitharaman's hope that the channel would relay the right information in a balanced manner set the public tone for its editorial ambitions. Like much of the Odia media, the channel has faced public speculation about political leanings — regional commentary has rumoured an attraction toward the BJP — while the channel itself has maintained that it broadcasts news impartially in the interest of the people of Odisha.

Market Position

Argus News entered one of India's most crowded regional news markets. Its competitors include the long-established market leader Odisha TV (OTV), MBC TV, News18 Odia, Kanak News (backed by the Sambad newspaper group), Zee Odisha and Prameya News7, alongside newer entrants such as Kalinga TV and Kamyab TV. Against these rivals, Argus's differentiator was its digital-first pedigree: unlike channels launched cold onto satellite, it arrived with an existing online audience and a presentation style honed on social media.

The timing was significant. The early 2020s saw considerable churn in Odia news television: Zee Odisha (formerly Zee Kalinga News) ceased satellite broadcasting in March 2022 and continued as a digital-only channel, while the Sidharth TV Network's entertainment channels and Star Kiran reshaped the entertainment side of the market. In that fluid landscape, Argus's combination of a satellite presence and a mature digital operation gave it reach across both television and online audiences. Trade coverage at launch noted the channel's rapid audience building in its digital years, and its LinkedIn presence describes a channel that "in a short time... redefined the limits" of Odia news television through differentiated programming and a philosophy of inclusive journalism.

Distribution

At launch, the channel said it would be available on DTH and cable platforms, with carriage across major DTH operators including Dish TV, Tata Play (then Tata Sky), Airtel Digital TV, Sun Direct and DD Free Dish planned in phases, beginning with digital cable networks. The channel's satellite transmission made it available to television households across Odisha and to Odia-speaking viewers elsewhere in India. Trade listings at the time placed Argus among the cluster of new Odia channels — alongside the Sidharth bouquet — rolling out across DTH and cable through 2021 and 2022.

Digital Presence

Digital remains central to Argus News. The channel operates the website argusnews.in with a live-TV stream, alongside active YouTube, Facebook, X (Twitter) and Instagram presences that predate the satellite channel and continue to drive its audience. The digital operation that began around 2018 remains the channel's newsgathering and audience backbone, with the website serving as the hub for live streaming and video news.
