About Asia Pacific Defence Reporter

Asia Pacific Defence Reporter

Overview

Asia Pacific Defence Reporter, universally known as APDR, is an Australian defence trade magazine covering the Australian Defence Force, the Australian defence industry and the military balance across the Asia-Pacific. It combines a print and digital magazine, published eight times a year, with a daily news website at asiapacificdefencereporter.com, a daily email news bulletin and a long-running podcast hosted by its editor, Kym Bergmann.

APDR describes itself, in its own billing, as the longest established defence publication in Australia, and it occupies a distinctive position in the local defence media: an independently owned specialist title, published by Ventura Media Asia Pacific from Sydney, whose editor is a prominent and often outspoken commentator on Australian defence policy. Its coverage spans the three services and the joint domain — land, air and space, sea, joint projects, government policy, simulation and training, and industry news — with an emphasis on Australian acquisition programs, sovereign industry capability and regional strategic developments.

History

APDR's volume numbering places its first volume in the mid-1970s: the magazine entered its 51st year in 2025, and its 2026 issues are numbered Volume 52. Library catalogue records trace the title through decades of print publication under successive ISSN registrations, from Engadine and later Miranda in Sydney's south, where its publisher Ventura Media Asia Pacific remains based. On that record it is, as it claims, Australia's longest-running defence publication, predating the modern defence industry media in this country.

Among its earlier editors, the journalist Denis Warner edited the magazine from 1981 to 1995, as his family's Lowy Institute memorial lecture material records — a tenure covering the later Cold War and the post-Cold War drawdown in the region. The title continued through the 1990s and 2000s as a print magazine serving Defence, government and industry subscribers.

The modern era of APDR began in May 2008, when Kym Bergmann returned to journalism to become its editor, a role he still holds. Under Bergmann the magazine built out a substantial digital operation: a daily news website, a daily bulletin, archived digital editions of the print magazine, and a weekly podcast that passed its 150th episode in September 2026. The publisher named in the magazine's current material is Marilyn Tangye Butler of Ventura Media Asia Pacific, and in 2025 the magazine reported that it had been named Defence Publishing Company of the Year for the Asia-Pacific in the Australian Enterprise Awards 2025 — an honour it announced on its own site.

Content and Coverage

The magazine's print and digital editions carry feature journalism on Australian and regional defence: interviews with service chiefs and senior officials — a recent edition carried the Chief of Navy in conversation with Bergmann — analysis of acquisition programs such as the MQ-28A Ghost Bat, coverage of the AUKUS submarine program and the surface fleet review, missile and rocket motor developments, cyber security, and the business of the Australian defence industry. Regular elements include the editor's letter, news-in-brief compilations and "From the Magazine" features republished on the website.

The website publishes defence industry news every day, organised by Land, Air & Space, Sea, Joint Projects, Government Policy & News, Simulation & Training and Industry News. On 18 October 2026 its homepage carried stories dated that day, spanning uncrewed surface vessels, naval sustainment and radar orders, alongside the APDR News in Brief roundup for 9 October 2026. Coverage is international as well as Australian, following regional militaries, allied programs and the global primes — Airbus, Boeing, Embraer, Leonardo, Saab and others — whose Australian operations anchor much of the local industry.

The magazine, whose tagline is "Australian Defence in a Global Context", also carries a diary of the region's defence exhibitions and conferences — in 2026 listing events including the ADAS show in Manila, Land Forces in Perth, MilCis and Parari in Canberra and KADEX in Korea — reflecting its role as a fixture of the regional trade-show circuit, where its print editions are distributed to delegates.

The APDR Podcast, hosted by Bergmann and distributed through Acast and the podcast platforms, delivers weekly commentary and interviews on defence and national security; episode 152 was published on 7 September 2026. Bergmann's editorials and podcast commentary are known for direct criticism of Defence bureaucracy and government policy, and the magazine explicitly welcomes reader comments on its website.

Audience and Reach

APDR's audience is the Australian and regional defence community: serving personnel and Defence officials, defence industry executives and business development staff, consultants, and policy specialists. Its subscription model is priced for that professional market — the rate published in its 2026 issues is AU$198 for one year in Australia, with higher rates for New Zealand, Asia-Pacific and the rest of the world, and a print subscription also includes the digital magazine, the daily e-news bulletins and the podcasts.

The publisher's own figures for its daily news bulletin, published in a 2020 advertising rate card, were 9,800 subscribers with an open rate of 24 per cent; those figures are the publisher's and are dated, and no current audited circulation for the magazine is published. The magazine is published eight times a year in combined print and digital editions — the July–August 2026 issue is Volume 52, Number 5, and a September–October 2026 Land Forces special issue was in preparation during 2026.

Digital Presence

APDR's website is a full news service in its own right, updated daily with industry news, podcast episodes, and the text of magazine features, and it hosts free PDF editions of complete recent issues of the print magazine. A daily news bulletin is emailed to subscribers, and the site promotes the magazine's presence at the region's defence expositions, including Land Forces in Perth and ADAS in Manila in 2026.

The digital archive stretches back years, and the site cross-promotes Ventura Media's stablemate, Defence Review Asia, which Bergmann also edits. Social following is modest — the site's own counters have shown roughly 1,800 Facebook fans and 2,700 followers on X — reflecting a niche professional readership rather than a consumer audience.

Ownership and Organisation

APDR is published by Ventura Media Asia Pacific Pty Ltd, an independent Sydney publisher based at Miranda, in the city's Sutherland Shire; the magazine's subscription address is PO Box 88, Miranda NSW 1490. The publisher is Marilyn Tangye Butler. Ventura Media also publishes Defence Review Asia, the group's regionally focused sister title.

The editor is Kym Bergmann, who holds the same role at Defence Review Asia. Bergmann's background, set out in his publisher biography, spans more than 35 years across journalism and the defence industry: an honours graduate of the Australian National University, he worked at Capital 7 television in Canberra in roles including foreign news editor and chief political correspondent, spent two years on the staff of a federal minister, and then held senior positions in defence companies including Blohm+Voss, Thales, Celsius and Saab, with board appointments at Thomson Sintra Pacific and Saab Pacific, before returning to journalism in May 2008. Group sales are handled by a group sales director, Simon Hadfield.
