About Atrangii

Atrangii: Vibhu Agarwal's Hindi Entertainment Channel with an OTT Heart

Atrangii is a Hindi general entertainment channel from Mumbai, launched in June 2022 by Vibhu Agarwal, a founder best known from the streaming industry. Its founding idea was to narrow the distance between television and OTT: instead of the open-ended daily soaps that dominate Hindi entertainment channels, Atrangii promised finite series with high production values, an evening line-up built for binge-style viewing, and, within weeks of launch, the unusual step of telecasting its shows break-free, without advertising interruptions and without any premium charge to the viewer.

The channel, whose launch tagline was Dekhte Raho, keep watching, targets viewers aged fifteen and above in the Hindi-speaking markets. Its schedule mixes mythology, drama, comedy, horror, suspense and crime, drawing both on original productions made for the channel and on popular web content brought to television. It is available across India's major pay platforms, including Tata Play, Airtel Digital TV, Dish TV, D2H, Hathway and Den, and it sits alongside the Atrangii app, the group's streaming service, which has since grown into a multi-vertical entertainment platform.

Overview

Atrangii entered one of the most crowded categories in Indian television, the Hindi general entertainment channel, with a deliberately different grammar. Where established rivals build their evenings around long-running family serials, Atrangii announced itself with finite series, stories with a defined end, produced with what it called world-class production and treatment. Its launch programming block ran from 7 p.m. to 11.30 p.m., four and a half hours of original and curated content in prime time, an unusually concentrated promise for a new channel.

The channel's positioning, summarised in its later slogan of bringing the pleasure of OTT to television, is aimed at viewers who had begun drifting from linear TV to streaming but still watch as families around a television set. By carrying web-style series on a broadcast channel, free of any subscription fee, Atrangii set out to give that audience streaming's content in television's simplest form: switch on, and watch.

History and Launch

Atrangii was announced on 27 April 2022, when Vibhu Agarwal unveiled the channel and its Dekhte Raho identity and set a launch for the first week of June. The announcement stressed the finite-series proposition, a rich original line-up of four hours from the first day, and a roster of well-known television and film faces who would headline its shows. It also trailed a companion digital service, a dedicated Atrangii 2.0 OTT platform that would stream live content and offer catch-up television.

The channel launched in June 2022, with launch-day coverage on 6 June describing a prime-time block beginning with the comedy Bheja Fry at 7 p.m. and running past midnight with the crime show Jaghanya. Within weeks the channel refreshed and publicised its binge-watch format, with Parshuram opening the evening at 7 p.m., Muqadar following, Hara Sindoor in the heart of prime time, Bestsellers showcasing web content, and the thrillers Jaghanya and Hotspot closing the night. In August 2022 came its most distinctive move: from 1 August, the channel announced, its entire line-up would be telecast break-free, a first, it said, for a Hindi general entertainment channel, and it published its first pricing benchmark for advertisers at the same time.

Ownership and Leadership

Atrangii is backed and led by Vibhu Agarwal, its founder and group chief executive, whose reputation was made in the OTT industry before this move into broadcasting. The channel thus represents a reversal of the usual direction of travel in Indian media: a streaming entrepreneur building a television channel, and treating television not as a legacy business but as another screen for streaming-style content.

Content leadership was entrusted to Nivedita Basu, who joined the company ahead of the launch with a track record of over two decades in television production. Her remit covered developing, creating and producing original content and leading strategic business alliances for the channel. She was subsequently elevated to senior vice president group at the Atrangii app, where her role expanded with the platform's growth, and she has been credited within the group with building new content verticals and with successful fiction and reality properties on the streaming side.

Programming and Schedule

The launch schedule shows the channel's range. The evening began with Bheja Fry, a comedy, at 7 p.m., followed by the romantic drama Dil-E-Ghumshuda from 7.30 to 8.30 p.m. Parshuram, telling the story of the sage-warrior of Hindu tradition, aired at 8.30 p.m. and was repeated later in the evening. At 9 p.m. came Hara Sindoor, the channel's flagship drama, and at 9.30 p.m. Bestseller brought acclaimed web content to television viewers without subscription. Jaghanya, a crime programme presenting real and dramatised cases of heinous crimes, closed the night from 11 p.m. to midnight.

As the schedule settled, Muqadar joined the early evening and the thriller strand of Jaghanya and Hotspot took over from 9.30 p.m. The mix was intentional: mythology for family audiences, social drama in prime position, comedy to open, and adult-skewing thrillers late at night, mirroring the genre spread of a streaming catalogue rather than the single-genre diet of a traditional soap channel. The channel has described its monthly line-ups as star-led, an extension of its launch strategy of recognisable faces in finite stories.

Notable Programmes

Hara Sindoor is the programme most associated with the channel's launch. Starring Bhumika Gurung and Ankit Gera in the lead roles, it is set in the village of Fogla, where, in the story's premise, the birth of a girl is celebrated for a disturbing reason connected to a village ritual that gives the show its name. Its heroine, Rani, once part of that world, undertakes an extraordinary journey against a village dictator to free the villagers from his rule, giving the serial a social-drama spine beneath its melodrama.

Parshuram, the mythological series about the warrior sage, gave the channel a devotional and family anchor and was trusted with two slots in the launch evening, a premiere and a repeat. Jaghanya brought the true-crime genre to its late-night schedule, while Bestseller, later styled Bestsellers, was the clearest expression of the channel's thesis: content made for the web, curated into a television slot, so that viewers without streaming subscriptions could watch it at no cost. Together the four titles explain the channel's name, atrangii, the unusual or offbeat one.

The Break-Free Experiment

In July 2022, weeks after launch, Atrangii announced that from 1 August its shows would be telecast break-free, without additional premium charges. Agarwal explained the reasoning in terms of experience: the group wanted Hindi-speaking audiences across the country to enjoy premium, OTT-style viewing, gripping concepts with high production values, on a family television channel, and removing advertising breaks enriched that experience. The channel presented the move as a first for a Hindi general entertainment channel and coupled it with its first pricing benchmark, signalling that it intended to sell advertisers reach and association rather than interruption.

Whatever its long-term commercial mechanics, the experiment defined the channel's early identity and earned it coverage well beyond what a new entrant could normally expect. It also aligned the broadcast channel with the group's streaming instincts: on the Atrangii app, uninterrupted viewing is the norm, and the television channel was, for its viewers, being run to the same rule.

Language and Audience

Atrangii is a Hindi channel aimed squarely at the Hindi-speaking markets, the HSM belt that forms the largest audience bloc in Indian television. Its declared target is the fifteen-plus segment, and its content is calibrated accordingly: family-viewable mythology and social drama in the heart of the evening, edgier thrillers later at night. The channel sought viewers across the length and breadth of the country rather than in a single region, a national ambition supported by carriage on all major pay platforms from launch.

The casting strategy underlines the audience play. Announced headliners included Shweta Tiwari, Rashmi Desai, Isha Koppikar, Shilpa Shinde, Rahul Roy, Vishal Aditya Singh, Bhumika Gurung, Hrishita Bhatt, Rituparna Sengupta and Ashmit Patel, with later line-ups adding names such as Jaya Bhattacharya, Aman Verma, Indranil Sengupta and Rakesh Bapat. These are faces familiar from television, film and reality formats, chosen to give a new channel instant recognition in a market where viewers choose by habit.

Availability and Platforms

Atrangii is available in India on all major pay television platforms, including Tata Play, Airtel Digital TV, Dish TV, D2H, Hathway and Den, among others. That breadth of carriage was in place from its launch period and was central to its pitch: a national Hindi channel cannot build an audience from a single platform, and the group presented availability as a solved problem from the start.

Alongside the channel stands the Atrangii app, the group's streaming platform, which launched in the same June 2022 period with live content and catch-up television and has grown since into what the group calls an all-in-one entertainment super app. The app has developed sub-verticals including Firangii, Satrangii, Flaunt and Imli, and original streaming properties such as Johri, Libaas, KINK and Ansuni, with further fiction and non-fiction slates announced for later years. The television channel and the app share a brand, a founder and a content philosophy, each feeding the other's audience.

Audience and Market Position

Atrangii's market task was formidable: Hindi general entertainment is dominated by channels with decades of viewer habit behind them. Its response was differentiation rather than imitation: finite stories instead of endless serials, web content premiered on television, star-led monthly line-ups, and break-free telecasts. For advertisers and platforms, the proposition was a young, fifteen-plus audience watching content closer in style to streaming than to conventional television.

The channel also matters as an industry signal. It demonstrated that the boundary between OTT and broadcast had become permeable in both directions: streaming originals could anchor a television schedule, and a television channel could be run by a streaming group as one window among several, alongside an app with its own originals and verticals.

Recent Developments

Since its launch year, the group's centre of gravity has visibly widened from the channel to the broader Atrangii entertainment ecosystem. Nivedita Basu's elevation to senior vice president group recognised her role across that expansion, and the app has continued to announce new shows and verticals, including a slate spanning fiction and reality formats. The television channel remains the brand's broadcast flagship in the Hindi entertainment market, the property that introduced the Atrangii name to mass audiences in June 2022.

Atrangii's story, in sum, is that of a streaming-age entrant testing how much of streaming's grammar, finite series, curated catalogues, uninterrupted viewing, television can absorb. Launched from Mumbai by Vibhu Agarwal with a four-and-a-half-hour prime-time block, a mythological, a village drama about a young woman defying a dictator, and a promise to keep watching, it remains one of the most distinctive experiments in recent Hindi television.
