About ATV
ATV
ATV, styled Atv and also recorded as A-TV, is a private nationwide television network in Armenia, headquartered in Yerevan and broadcasting in Armenian. The channel launched under its current name on 25 April 2009, replacing Armenakob TV's frequencies. On 1 May 2016 it expanded into thematic cable channels including Hay TV, Kinoman and Muzzone. It was Armenia's third-rated channel in the July 2019 ratings, behind only Armenia TV and Shant TV. For a decade it formed part of the PanArmenian Media Group alongside Armenia TV and ArmNews, until that holding ceased activities in 2019. This profile sets out the verified record of ATV's tangled founding history, ownership changes, programming and thematic channels — and states openly that its early corporate history is disputed between official registry data and media sources, because that dispute is itself part of the documented record.
Launch in 2009 and the Armenakob Inheritance
ATV originally launched on 25 April 2009, replacing Armenakob TV's now-defunct frequencies. The formulation matters: ATV did not appear on a new frequency but took over an existing Yerevan broadcasting position with an existing audience, technical base and company shell. The operating company is ATV LLC, and the channel broadcasts nationwide as a television and online service from its headquarters in Yerevan through its official website, atv.am.
The inheritance explains the channel's complicated paper trail. According to the State Register of Legal Entities of Armenia, as summarised by the Media Ownership Monitor, the company behind the channel has been registered as Armenakob TV from 1999 to 2000, as AS TV from 2000 to 2009, and as Armenakob TV again from 2009 onward — a timeline that, as the Monitor notes, differs from various media sources. Some reports describe Armen Amiryan as the founder of Armenakob TV in 2000, while registry records from 1999 list Armenak Sargsyan as a single owner holding a 7.6 per cent share. The Monitor's own summary of the position is the most accurate available: the channel was formerly known as Armenakob TV and adopted its current name in 2009, and its founding and ownership history are notably complex. This profile therefore dates ATV itself from its verified launch on 25 April 2009 and treats the pre-2009 names as the documented history of its predecessor company, without pretending that the predecessor's founding is settled.
Ownership History
Ownership of ATV LLC has shifted many times, through a network of family and business ties documented by the Media Ownership Monitor from registry sources. Stakeholders at various times included Armen Amiryan, a former Minister of Culture and member of the Republican Party, his wife Hranush Amiryan and his brother Arayik Amiryan, among others. From 2008 to 2014, 40 per cent of ATV LLC was owned by Hopar Media LLC, whose owner Otari Hakobyan is the father of Arthur Janibekyan, the founder of Comedy Club Production — the same Janibekyan who acquired Armenia TV outright in 2019. During that period the remaining 60 per cent was held by Vahe Ghazaryan. From 2014 to 2019 Bagrat Sargsyan, one of the founders of Armenia TV, was the sole owner of ATV LLC.
The PanArmenian Media Group Decade
That ownership pattern placed ATV inside the orbit of Armenia's largest private media holding. A-TV was part of the PanArmenian Media Group, which also included Armenia TV, ArmNews TV, Lav Radio, Radio Jan and the news website Tert.am. In 2019 the PanArmenian Media Group announced the suspension of its activities, citing the wishes of the shareholders of its member companies. Following the holding's closure, some of its former outlets — ArmNews, Lav Radio and Tert.am — joined Quarry Media, which itself dissolved in 2022. ATV continued as a standalone channel after 2019; the Monitor records that, despite repeated contact attempts, ATV LLC did not respond to its inquiries, and that audience and market share data for the channel are unavailable from that source. Those limits are recorded here rather than filled with estimates.
Programming
ATV's programming spans news, political and public affairs talk shows, original Armenian television series and both local and foreign films. Since 2015 its schedule has featured the Today news programme, and the channel has collaborated with the Russian entertainment network TNT. That combination — a domestic news and talk core, original Armenian series, film slots and a content relationship with a major Russian entertainment broadcaster — is characteristic of the PanArmenian group era, in which Armenian channels combined local production with Russian-format and Russian-network material for prime time.
The channel's third place in the July 2019 ratings, ahead of the public broadcaster, indicates that this mix worked commercially at group scale: ATV was not the largest channel in its own holding — Armenia TV ranked first in the same ratings — but it held a clear national position of its own, distinct from its sister channel's more entertainment-led identity, with a heavier emphasis on talk and public affairs within a generalist schedule.
Thematic Cable Channels from 2016
On 1 May 2016 ATV introduced new thematic cable television channels for different audiences, one of the earliest multi-channel expansions by an Armenian broadcaster. The documented line-up comprised eight services. Hay TV is an Armenian music channel. Bazmots TV carries television programmes, series, sketches, performances and other shows. Kinoman is an international movies channel. Xaxaliq TV is a children's channel. Filmzone carries animated cartoons and comedy. Tava TV covers hunting, fishing and cooking. Muzzone shows world hits and best-loved music performances. Fitness TV covers fitness and health.
Significance of the Cable Expansion
This directory's seed record names Hay TV, Kinoman and Muzzone as examples of the 2016 launch, which matches the fuller documented list. The expansion is significant in the Armenian context because the country's television market is small: launching eight niche cable services at once was a statement that the group intended to compete not only for the national terrestrial audience but for the segmented cable audience as well, in genres — children's, film, music, lifestyle — that a single generalist channel cannot serve in depth.
Distribution and Licensing
ATV broadcasts nationwide in Armenia. It held a place in the state digital multiplex formed by the digital transition, which incorporated 18 metropolitan channels and nine regional channels, and it broadcasts additionally by cable — the natural home of its thematic channels — and online. In the licensing history recorded by the Media Ownership Monitor for H2 and Yerkir Media, ATV appears among the winners of the January 2021 nationwide tender as A-TV LLC, one of five companies initially granted licences alongside Armenia TV, Husaber (Yerkir Media), Shant and Multi Media-Kentron, before that tender was annulled in court. In the re-run nationwide process concluded on 2 December 2022, the regulator granted nationwide licences to four outlets — Armenia TV, ATV, Shant TV and Kentron TV. ATV therefore holds, on the documented record, one of the four nationwide terrestrial positions in the current Armenian system.
Audience Standing
The firmest audience evidence for ATV is the July 2019 ratings summary published by Media Landscapes: Armenia TV first, Shant TV second, ATV third, the Public Television of Armenia fourth and Kentron TV fifth. Third place in a market dominated by two large entertainment channels, and ahead of the state-funded public broadcaster, is a substantial position for a channel that had existed under its own name for only a decade. In trust research such as the Caucasus Barometer, ATV's sister services and the wider group appear regularly; channel-level trust figures for ATV itself are not separately published in the sources used for this profile, and the Media Ownership Monitor explicitly lists the channel's audience and market share data as unavailable. The 2019 ranking is therefore the benchmark this profile relies on, and it is presented as a 2019 benchmark rather than as a claim about the channel's present share.
ATV in the Armenian Media System
ATV illustrates three recurring features of Armenian television. The first is continuity through renaming: a frequency and company that passed from Armenakob TV through AS TV and back to Armenakob before emerging as ATV in 2009 carried staff, audience and regulatory history with them, so the channel's true age depends on whether one counts the brand or the broadcaster. The second is holding-company organisation: for its first decade ATV's identity, programming relationships and commercial strength were inseparable from the PanArmenian Media Group, and the group's dissolution in 2019 was the channel's most important structural event since its launch. The third is the interconnection of Armenian media families: the documented shareholdings link ATV at different times to a former culture minister's family, to the father of the producer who later bought Armenia TV, and to Armenia TV's own founder as sole owner from 2014 to 2019.
What can be stated with confidence is the core record: a Yerevan-based private network, launched as ATV on 25 April 2009 on Armenakob's frequencies, broadcasting in Armenian nationwide, third in the 2019 ratings, operator since 2016 of a family of thematic cable channels, former PanArmenian Media Group member, and holder of a nationwide licence in the current four-channel terrestrial system. Beyond that core, this profile has flagged the disputed founding chronology and the unavailable audience data openly, because for this channel the honest gaps are part of the verified story.
