About Auerbacher Zeitung
Auerbacher Zeitung
The Auerbacher Zeitung is the local edition of the Freie Presse for Auerbach, the second-largest town of the Saxon Vogtland, and its recent history illustrates the consolidation of the East German regional press in miniature. As one of the nineteen local editions of the Freie Presse, Saxony's largest subscription daily, it combines locally produced pages for Auerbach and the surrounding Vogtlandkreis with the shared regional and national section produced in Chemnitz. Since the closure of the Vogtland-Anzeiger in January 2022, the last independent daily startup of the post-reunification era in the former East Germany, the Freie Presse editions, including the Auerbacher Zeitung, have been the only daily papers serving the Vogtland's readers.
Overview
The Auerbacher Zeitung serves Auerbach, a town of around eighteen thousand inhabitants in the Vogtland hills, and the neighboring communities of the Vogtlandkreis, the district that stretches from the Bavarian and Czech borders to the outskirts of Plauen. Its readers find the program of the classic German regional daily: the town council and district politics, the local economy of manufacturing, crafts and tourism, education and social affairs, the club and association life, and the court and police reporting of the area. The local pages are produced for the Auerbach area, while the Mantel, the national and regional section, arrives from the central newsroom in Chemnitz under editor-in-chief Torsten Kleditzsch, in office since March 2009.
The Freie Presse as a whole sells 161,181 copies, nearly eighty-seven percent to subscribers, and remains the dominant newspaper of southwestern Saxony after a circulation decline of more than sixty percent since 1998. The Auerbach edition is one of nineteen local editions mapping the old Bezirk Karl-Marx-Stadt, and in the Vogtland it now stands alone: where readers once could choose between the Freie Presse's Plauener Zeitung and the independent Vogtland-Anzeiger, the latter's closure has left the Freie Presse editions as the region's sole daily papers. The paper appears Monday through Saturday and shares the freiepresse.de news portal with the group's other editions.
History
The Freie Presse was founded on 20 May 1946 and took its present form in 1963 through the merger of the Volksstimme of Karl-Marx-Stadt with the Freie Presse of Zwickau, becoming the SED party organ for the Bezirk Karl-Marx-Stadt. In the GDR it became the largest regional daily in East Germany, printing 600,000 copies daily in January 1990. After reunification it passed directly, without public tender, to the Medien-Union of Ludwigshafen, the publishing house of Die Rheinpfalz, and was rebuilt as a commercially run regional daily under the Chemnitzer Verlag und Druck GmbH & Co. KG.
The Vogtland's own post-reunification press story ran in parallel. In March 1990 the Vogtland-Anzeiger was founded as an independent daily, the last newspaper startup of the Wende era in the former East Germany, and for three decades it competed with the Freie Presse's Vogtland editions. It went through insolvencies in 2005 and 2018, was taken over in November 2018 by a subsidiary of the Chemnitzer Verlag, and had already closed its local newsrooms in Auerbach, Reichenbach, Oelsnitz and Klingenthal in 2004, retreating to a single newsroom in Plauen long before the end. When it finally ceased publication on 31 January 2022, its subscribers were transferred to the corresponding Freie Presse local editions. For Auerbach this meant that the Auerbacher Zeitung absorbed the readership of its former competitor, becoming the town's undisputed daily paper, and inheriting readers whose loyalty had been to a paper founded in the optimism of 1990.
Coverage and Content
The Auerbach edition's local pages cover the town and the Vogtlandkreis: the town council, the district administration in Plauen, the mayors of the surrounding municipalities, and the standing issues of a rural district on the Czech border, from school locations to medical care, from road infrastructure to the development of tourism in the Vogtland hills. The region's manufacturing tradition, musical instrument making around Markneukirchen and Klingenthal, the textile history of Plauen and the winter sports of the upper Vogtland give the paper distinctive beats, and the cross-border relationship with the Czech Republic is a recurring theme.
The shared section from Chemnitz delivers Saxon state politics from Dresden, national and international news, business and sports. The group's traditions include the chess column published since 1960 and, until 2018, the Pressefest in the Chemnitz Küchwald. Special supplements around elections and regional events complement the daily paper. With the Vogtland-Anzeiger gone, the Auerbacher Zeitung carries an added responsibility: it is not just Auerbach's paper but the only daily paper systematically covering the town, and its local pages are the record of the community's public life. The paper follows the town's efforts to position itself within the Vogtland's tourism and leisure economy, the development of its schools and sports facilities, and the retail and service businesses of the town center. Its reporting on the district's border location, the crossings into the Czech Republic and the cooperation between Vogtland municipalities and their Czech neighbors, reflects a region for which the open border, closed for four decades, remains within living memory and continues to shape everyday life.
Organization and Ownership
The Auerbacher Zeitung is published by the Chemnitzer Verlag und Druck GmbH & Co. KG of Chemnitz, part of the Medien Union GmbH of Ludwigshafen am Rhein. The Chemnitz operation, the CVD Mediengruppe, includes the newspaper, its printing business and related media activities. The nineteen local editions form a decentralized reporting network, with local newsrooms feeding their editions while Chemnitz produces the shared pages and manages the commercial operation.
The absorption of the Vogtland-Anzeiger's subscribers in 2022 completed a consolidation that had been underway since the 2018 takeover: the Vogtland, which had sustained two competing dailies for three decades after reunification, is now a single-paper region for the Freie Presse. The Auerbacher Zeitung's local newsroom is the institutional guarantee that this market position is exercised as local journalism rather than mere distribution, covering the councils, courts and clubs of its area with reporters on the ground. In a media landscape where the economics of print increasingly favor the large units, the edition model is what allows a town the size of Auerbach to keep a daily paper with its own name, its own local pages and its own journalists.
Digital Presence
The digital home of the Auerbacher Zeitung is freiepresse.de, where the Auerbach edition appears with its own local news stream among the nineteen editions. The portal offers continuously updated regional news, the e-paper edition for digital subscribers, photo galleries and videos, following the subscription model standard in the German regional press. Social media channels for the individual editions distribute the day's local stories and drive traffic back to the portal.
For the Vogtland's readers the digital offering has a particular significance: former subscribers of the Vogtland-Anzeiger who were transferred to the Freie Presse in 2022 encountered the freiepresse.de portal as their new digital home, and the paper's e-paper replicates the familiar structure of the printed editions for readers moving to tablets. Newsletters deliver the morning's Vogtland headlines to inboxes across the district, ensuring that the Auerbacher Zeitung remains present in its readers' daily routines in print and online alike. From its Auerbach newsroom to the Chemnitz presses, the paper's daily journey mirrors the region it serves: rooted in the Vogtland, produced in Saxony, and read wherever its readers have gone.
