About Australasian Dental Practice
Australasian Dental Practice
Overview
Australasian Dental Practice is a bi-monthly trade magazine for dentists and dental practice teams across Australia and New Zealand, published by Main Street Publishing in Sydney. Where many dental titles concentrate on clinical technique, this magazine's centre of gravity is the business and professional life of dentistry: practice management, finance, practice design, infection control, technology and continuing professional development, published alongside clinical articles written by practising dentists and academics. It appears in print every two months and is supported by the dentalpractice.com.au website, an online professional community and an associated events and education business.
The magazine is edited by its publisher, Joseph Allbeury, and has been published since 1990 — its March/April 2026 edition was Volume 37, Number 1. It is frequently confused with the similarly named Australasian Dentist, but the two are entirely separate publications from unrelated publishers: Australasian Dental Practice is a Main Street Publishing title based in Sydney, while Australasian Dentist is published by Great Australian Publishing in Melbourne.
History
Main Street Publishing's own advertising information states that Australasian Dental Practice was first published in 1990, and the volume numbering in current issues is consistent with that start: the March/April 2024 edition and a September/October 2025 edition sit within a run that reached Volume 37, Number 1 in March/April 2026. From the beginning the magazine was created, in the publisher's words, "for Dentists, Specialists and anyone working in dentistry", and it grew into the anchor of a small dental media group.
Around the magazine, Main Street Publishing built companion titles and services for other segments of the profession: Oral Hygiene (formerly Auxiliary), a magazine for dental hygienists, therapists and other auxiliaries, and eLABORATE, a title for the dental technology and laboratory sector. The group also developed the Dentevents events calendar and registration service and the Dental Community website, a professional network and directory for the industry. Individual issues of Australasian Dental Practice have long exceeded 200 pages, and the magazine has been published every two months throughout its recent history.
A sense of the title's continuity comes from its contributors: Graham Middleton, a practice-management and finance adviser, contributed articles to the magazine for some thirty years — close to 200 articles by the count given in the obituary the magazine published for him in its March/April 2026 issue, in which publisher Joseph Allbeury recorded Middleton's death at the age of 80.
Content and Coverage
Editorially, the magazine divides between the business of practice and clinical development. The business coverage includes practice management and staffing, finance and fee-setting, buying, selling and valuing practices, partnership and associate arrangements, premises and retirement — the territory Graham Middleton's long-running advice columns covered — and the magazine regularly profiles practice design and fit-out projects, such as its September/October 2025 feature on Kalkallo Dental Care in Victoria and a March/April 2026 feature on a Jannali practice's infection-control-first design.
The clinical and professional-development content is substantial and often carries continuing professional development (CPD) value: recent issues have carried CPD articles on failures with local anaesthetic, dental splint materials including nylon, PMMA, POM and 3D-printed resins, immediate implant restoration concepts, indirect pulp capping, and infection-control reprocessing standards for instruments and handpieces. News briefs, product information and industry comment round out each issue. Contributors are drawn from practice and the universities: Professor Laurence J. Walsh of the University of Queensland, for example, has been a prominent contributor and is described in the magazine's pages as its technology editor, and his name appears on the cover of the March/April 2026 edition of sister title Oral Hygiene.
Distribution is bundled across the group: the publisher's advertising material describes Australasian Dental Practice being distributed with Oral Hygiene and eLABORATE so that, between them, the titles reach the different segments of the dental team. The rate information also records that paid subscribers received access to premium options online and discounts on education courses, tying the print subscription into the group's digital services.
The group was also an early mover in online continuing education for the profession: Australasian Dental Practice subscribers were given access through the magazine's website to the streamed lecture programmes of Brisbane-based CEO Dental, a service developed by prosthodontists Dr Michael Mandikos and Dr Tony Rotondo that delivered lectures by internationally known dentists over the internet for CE credit. That partnership is documented in the site's own news archive and illustrates how the magazine's offer extended beyond print into professional development from an early stage of online learning.
Audience and Reach
The magazine is aimed at dentists, specialists and everyone working in dentistry in Australia and New Zealand — practice owners and managers as much as clinicians. A subscription to Australasian Dental Practice, including Oral Hygiene, has been priced at $99 per annum in recent issues (2025 and 2026 colophons), sold through the group's online shop.
The most detailed distribution figures available are the publisher's own: its 2018 advertising rate information stated that more than 8,000 copies were distributed with Oral Hygiene and eLABORATE to all dental practices across Australia and New Zealand, plus individual subscribers, and that 40 per cent of copies were paid subscriptions. Those figures are publisher claims from 2018, not an independent audit, and are dated accordingly; no current audited circulation was found in the sources consulted. The group's websites indicate the scale of its online archive: dentalpractice.com.au advertises a searchable archive of some 2,977 news articles.
Digital Presence
The magazine's website, dentalpractice.com.au, carries news and articles from the magazine, streaming dental videos, and subscriber access to premium content and continuing education. Around it sits a wider digital group: the Dental Community website (dentalcommunity.com.au, also reached via dentist.com.au) provides professional directories, classifieds and marketing services for the industry — its current service pages offer advertisers packages across Australasian Dental Practice, Oral Hygiene and eLABORATE, brochure inserts in the magazines, email campaigns built on the group's databases of dental-industry contacts across Australia and New Zealand, and social media promotion — and it carries the archive of contributors' articles. Dentevents (dentevents.com) is the group's events calendar and registration engine for dental lectures and congresses, able to take registrations and payments on an organiser's behalf for anything from an evening lecture to a multi-stream congress — its calendar was listing events through 2026 and beyond when reviewed in October 2026 — with an associated Dentevents TV video service. The group also maintains social media channels for its titles, including the Oral Hygiene/Auxiliary accounts and a Dentevents Instagram presence, and sells subscriptions and advertising through an online shop at shop.dentalpractice.com.au.
Ownership and Organisation
Australasian Dental Practice is published by Main Street Publishing Pty Ltd (ABN 74 065 490 655), an independent publisher based in Sydney; its postal address is PO Box 586, Cammeray NSW 2062. Joseph Allbeury is both publisher and editor of the magazine — he is named as "Publisher & Editor" in current issue colophons — and he is also the publisher of the group's other titles (Oral Hygiene and eLABORATE) and of Dentevents.com. The business is a compact, owner-operated publishing house: editorial, subscriptions, events and the online community are all run by the same company, and the magazine's content is produced with contributing clinicians, academics and industry consultants rather than a large staff newsroom.
