About Australian Mining

Australian Mining

Overview

Australian Mining is one of the longest-lived trade publications in Australian industry, a monthly print magazine supported by a daily news website and e-newsletter that together cover mining technology, equipment, safety and innovation for the people who run the country's mines. The title dates its establishment to 1908, and its own summary of the product is succinct: since 1908 it has informed the industry on the latest news and technologies from across the mining sector, through a monthly print magazine, a website and an e-newsletter that showcase the latest in mining innovation. It is published in Melbourne by Prime Creative Media, Australia's largest business-to-business publishing group, and the name Australian Mining is a registered trademark of that company.

The magazine's orientation is operational rather than financial. Where other mining media chase exploration results and share prices, Australian Mining concentrates on the working mine: production technology, equipment and maintenance, processing, automation, safety practice and the management of operating sites across coal, iron ore, gold, base metals and the critical minerals. Its website publishes exploration and company news daily alongside that features coverage, and the brand extends into podcasts, webcasts, an online equipment marketplace and the Australian Mining Prospect Awards, the national awards program that has recognised excellence across the sector for more than a decade.

History

The title traces its origins to 1908, the year Melbourne publisher Peter Guthrie Tait began the Mining and Engineering Review, the ancestor in the lineage of trade journals from which the modern magazine descends. Through the twentieth century the magazine passed through the succession of Australian business publishing houses, and for decades it was part of Reed Business Information's Australian portfolio, published from within one of the country's two dominant B2B groups. When Reed's local operation was taken over by private equity firm Catalyst and rebranded as Cirrus Media in 2013, Australian Mining went with it, sitting alongside sister industrial titles such as Manufacturers' Monthly in the Cirrus stable.

In November 2015 Cirrus sold its industrial, mining, manufacturing and agricultural titles and associated events to Melbourne-based Prime Creative Media, completing a strategy of retreating to health and financial publishing, and Australian Mining has been a Prime Creative Media title ever since. The magazine marked 110 years of circulation in November 2018. Under Prime Creative the brand has been developed beyond the printed page: the website was built into a daily news service with an archive of well over a thousand pages of news stories, the title's social audience grew to one of the largest in Australian trade media, and its long-running awards were relaunched as the Australian Mining Prospect Awards, refreshed again for 2026 with new categories for mine site rehabilitation and closure and for sustainability innovation. In 2026 the awards were presented at a gala at Fraser's Kings Park in Perth, across three individual and sixteen company categories, with a Lifetime Achievement Award among those sponsored under the Australian Mining name.

Content and Coverage

The monthly magazine is built around features on mining technology and practice: equipment and component innovation, mine site infrastructure, processing technology, automation and digital systems, maintenance, and safety. Recent feature coverage has ranged from conveyor clean-up systems designed to keep personnel away from hazardous areas, to cyclone-rated site structures protecting tyre recycling plant in the Pilbara heat, and the magazine regularly carries the views of equipment manufacturers, contractors and site operators alongside its reporting. Its news service, published daily on the website, covers the broader sector — company announcements such as Pilbara Gold's drilling results at its Mt York project and Black Cat Syndicate's high-grade gold intersections at Coyote in the Tanami, project approvals, and industry policy, including coverage of research funding for Fortescue's Pilbara solar innovation hub.

Safety is a defining strand: the brand's reporting of regulator bulletins and incident lessons is amplified by its sister title Safe To Work within the same publishing group, and safety categories anchor its awards program, where Safety Advocate of the Year and Australian Mine of the Year — won in 2025 by Gold Fields' Agnew gold mine — are among the headline honours. Beyond news and features, the site hosts podcasts and webcasts, a resources and events section, and coverage of critical minerals as a standing topic. The website also operates a used-equipment marketplace as part of the publisher's TraderAds network, listing machinery from telehandlers to elution columns for sale from dealers and sites around Australia, which gives the brand a commercial classifieds dimension alongside its editorial one. Sponsored and partner content appears on the site and in the magazine and is identified as such, and many feature articles are written in collaboration with the supplier companies whose technology is under discussion.

Audience and Reach

Australian Mining addresses the operational workforce and management of the mining industry: mine managers, engineers, maintenance and processing specialists, safety professionals and the executives who buy equipment and services for operating sites. Its circulation is a paid subscription for the print magazine — the publisher promotes annual magazine subscriptions through the website — supplemented by the open website and e-newsletter, which carry its news to a wider professional readership.

Its digital reach is among the largest of any Australian trade title. The brand's LinkedIn showcase page counts more than 216,000 followers, and industry directories credit it with roughly 58,000 Facebook followers and 38,500 followers on X; those are platform-reported counts rather than audited circulation, and no audited print circulation figure is published for the title. The geographic spread of the brand is national — its 2026 awards gala was held in Perth, its marketplace listings come from every mining state, and its publisher runs mining events including the Queensland Mining & Engineering Exhibition, the Hunter Valley Mining Expo and the WA Mining Conference & Exhibition — but its editorial office is in Melbourne, in South Melbourne by the brand's own LinkedIn listing, alongside the rest of Prime Creative Media's Victorian operation.

Digital Presence

The website, australianmining.com.au, is the brand's daily face, publishing news as it happens across the sector, with features, resources, events coverage, critical minerals reporting, podcasts and webcasts, and a newsletter subscription offered throughout. The archive runs to more than 1,600 pages of news listings, evidence of the volume of daily publishing since the site became a news service in its own right. The monthly print magazine remains the flagship subscription product, sold by annual subscription through the site, and the e-newsletter carries headlines to subscribers between issues. The brand maintains an unusually large social media presence for a trade title — the LinkedIn following above 216,000 is exceptional in B2B publishing — and distributes video and podcast content through its own channels. The TraderAds marketplace embedded in the site connects it to Prime Creative Media's network of more than thirty classified and trade titles across transport, construction, manufacturing, waste, water and agriculture, from Big Rigs and Earthmoving Equipment to Quarry, Inside Construction and The Australian Pipeliner.

Ownership and Organisation

Australian Mining is published by Prime Creative Media, the Melbourne-based business-to-business publisher that acquired it from Cirrus Media in November 2015 as part of the industrial, mining, manufacturing and agricultural portfolio sale; the Australian Mining name is a registered trademark of Prime Creative Media, as the website's footer records. Prime Creative Media is one of Australia's largest B2B publishers, with a portfolio spanning dozens of trade titles across mining, transport, manufacturing, construction, waste and wealth management — the latter including Money Management and Investor Daily — and a substantial events business that includes the Queensland Mining & Engineering Exhibition, the Hunter Valley Mining Expo and the WA Mining Conference & Exhibition. Within that structure the Australian Mining team produces the monthly magazine and daily website from Melbourne, with staff writers producing news and features and the publisher's awards and conferences division running the Prospect Awards program, headed in 2026 by its head of awards and conferences, Caitlyn Douglas.
