About Azure

Azure

Overview

Azure is an architecture and design media brand published from Toronto, Ontario, covering architecture, interiors, product design, landscape and urbanism for an international professional readership and what its website calls "the design-savvy public." Founded in 1985 by Nelda Rodger and Sergio Sgaramella, it spent four decades as the flagship of the independent Toronto publisher Azure Publishing before a bankruptcy-protection filing in the autumn of 2025 led to its acquisition, announced on December 17, 2025, by the New York-based SANDOW Companies, under which it operates as part of SANDOW Design Group. Elizabeth Pagliacolo, editor-in-chief since February 2021, continues in that role under the new ownership, and the brand continues in print — the publisher's current subscription offer is six issues a year — alongside a daily website and its annual international design competition, the AZ Awards, launched in 2011.

Azure was verified as actively publishing in 2026: its homepage carried stories with October 2026 imagery and coverage of Paris Design Week 2026 and Detroit Month of Design 2026, promoted its issue No. 316, the Summer 2026 edition, and a Fall 2026 "Big Building Issue," and in January 2026 it was jointly announcing design-award winners with its sister publication Designlines at Toronto's Interior Design Show.

History

Azure was launched in Toronto in 1985 by husband-and-wife partners Sergio Sgaramella and Nelda Rodger. A success-story profile by Ontario Creates, the provincial creative-industries agency, records that the founders set out to fill a gap they saw between trade publications and home-decorating magazines, serving architects and designers as a reference while also reaching members of the public who appreciate contemporary design. The early 1990s recession cut the magazine from ten issues a year to six; it returned to eight issues in 2005. In 2000 Azure won Magazine of the Year at Canada's National Magazine Awards. In 2001 the company launched Designlines, a Toronto-focused sister publication that began as a local shopping guide answering the questions readers kept asking about the furniture and objects in Azure's pages; Designlines turned fifteen in 2016 and was still being published alongside Azure into 2026. Government magazine-fund support helped the publisher build a new Azure website in 2012 and a Designlines website in 2013.

Rodger, the founding editor, led the magazine for nearly three decades. In February 2013 deputy editor Catherine Osborne was named editor-in-chief, with Rodger remaining as editorial director of Azure Publishing; in February 2021 Elizabeth Pagliacolo, who would win a National Magazine Award, succeeded to the editor-in-chief role. The magazine marked its 30th anniversary in 2015 and its 40th with a special anniversary issue in 2025. The anniversary year ended in crisis: Azure filed for bankruptcy protection in the autumn of 2025 — coverage of the filing by Business of Home put the company's estimated debt at about $850,000 and attributed its difficulties to a decade of declining print revenue and broader media-industry change — and on December 17, 2025, SANDOW Companies announced it had acquired the brand. "Sergio Sgaramella and his late wife, Nelda Rodger, created a publication defined by curiosity, intelligence, and an unwavering belief in the cultural impact of design," SANDOW founder and chief executive Adam Sandow said in the announcement. "We are incredibly proud to steward Azure into its next chapter." With the sale, the brand is no longer Canadian-owned, though its editorial team remained largely intact in Toronto.

Content and Coverage

Azure's coverage spans the full design field: residential, commercial and institutional architecture; interiors; furniture, lighting and product design; landscape architecture; and urbanism, mixing international subjects with Canadian work of the same calibre — the formula its founders credited for its growth. Its daily website mixes project profiles and building stories (its Fall 2026 "Big Building Issue" led with OMA's expansion of New York's New Museum), product and materials coverage, and on-the-ground reporting from the global design calendar, including Milan Design Week, Paris Design Week, Cersaie and Toronto's Interior Design Show and DesignTO festival. Canadian design receives sustained attention, from emerging-maker roundups at IDS Toronto to coverage of Waterfront Toronto's landscape-led development.

The brand's signature programme is the AZ Awards, an international competition launched in 2011 and open to architects, landscape architects, designers, students, clients and manufacturers across categories from residential and commercial architecture to furniture, lighting and interior products; the 2013 edition drew 677 entries from 35 countries, according to Ontario Creates, and the awards had reached their fifteenth annual edition by the mid-2020s, with SANDOW confirming on acquisition that the programme would continue. Designlines runs its own Best in Design Awards for the Toronto-area scene, whose 2026 winners were announced jointly with Azure at the Interior Design Show in January 2026.

Audience and Reach

Azure addresses architects, interior and product designers, landscape architects, manufacturers, students and the design-engaged public, in Canada and internationally — its website describes it as "an indispensable resource for architects, designers and the design-savvy public," the brand's own wording. Its international weight is long-standing: Ontario Creates' profile of the publisher, published in the mid-2010s, put the magazine's circulation at 18,500, with about a quarter going to the United States, and noted international circulation at times outpacing Canadian growth — figures from that period, presented here as dated context rather than current numbers; no current audited circulation is published. The brand's standing in its field is independently attested: beyond the 2000 Magazine of the Year honour, in 2026 the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada gave Azure an Architectural Journalism and Media Award in its annual awards programme.

Digital Presence

Azuremagazine.com is the brand's daily platform, carrying news, project stories and product coverage with new material posted through October 2026 in the record checked for this profile, and hosting the AZ Awards. Digital subscriptions, sold through the brand's subscription pages, bundle the print edition with unlimited online access to the current issue and a growing archive of past editions; the publisher's current offer is six print issues a year at a regular Canadian price of $49.95, promoted with a free 2026 calendar. The site was rebuilt in 2012 with Ontario magazine-fund support, and the brand maintains the social channels linked from its site. Print remains central to the offer: the magazine is produced, as its subscription pages note, on 100 per cent FSC-certified recycled paper with soy-based inks.

Ownership and Organisation

Azure is owned by SANDOW Companies of New York and operates within SANDOW Design Group, the company's design-media collective, alongside titles including Luxe Interiors + Design, Interior Design, Metropolis and Design Milk; SANDOW said the Toronto title would operate independently within the group while expanding its digital storytelling and industry programmes, and that it would continue to pursue international acquisitions. The founding publisher, Azure Publishing Inc. of Toronto, no longer publishes the magazine following the December 2025 acquisition out of bankruptcy protection — a change from the ownership this directory's inventory recorded. Editorial leadership continues under editor-in-chief Elizabeth Pagliacolo, whom SANDOW confirmed in the role at acquisition, with much of the Toronto editorial team retained through the transition. The acquisition announcement did not address the sister title Designlines, which Azure Publishing launched in 2001; Designlines remained active alongside Azure into January 2026, when the two brands jointly presented its Best in Design Awards at the Interior Design Show.

Contact and Availability

Azure is published from Toronto, Ontario, and is available by subscription in print and digital editions — six issues a year on the publisher's current offer — through azuremagazine.com and its linked subscription pages, where AZ Awards entries and the digital archive are also handled. Directory listings place the magazine's Toronto office at 213 Sterling Road, Suite 206; the website is the primary route for subscription, advertising and editorial contact. Single copies and special editions, including the 40th Anniversary Issue and the annual AZ Awards issue, are sold through the same channels.
