Bad Oeynhausener Kurier

The Bad Oeynhausener Kurier is the local edition of the Neue Westfälische for Bad Oeynhausen and Löhne, two towns in the Minden-Lübbecke district of North Rhine-Westphalia, appearing together with the Löhner Nachrichten as a single edition with a sold circulation of 12,142 copies. As part of the Neue Westfälische, the subscription daily for the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region published in Bielefeld, it combines locally produced pages for the spa town on the Weser with the shared regional and national section of the NW group. The paper appears Monday through Saturday in Rheinisch format and shares the nw.de news portal with the group's other local editions.

Overview

The Bad Oeynhausener Kurier serves Bad Oeynhausen, the state-recognized spa town known for its historic Kurpark, its saltwater thermal springs and its heart and diabetes clinics, which make health tourism one of the town's defining industries, together with the neighboring town of Löhne, a railway junction and furniture-industry town on the Werre river. Its readers find the program of the classic German local daily: the town councils and district politics, the health economy and the spa business, the local industry and crafts, education and social affairs, the club and association life, and the court and police reporting of the area. The local pages are produced by the paper's own newsrooms, led by Thorsten Gödecker in Bad Oeynhausen and Dirk Windmöller in Löhne, while the Mantel, the regional and national section, arrives from the Bielefeld headquarters.

The edition competes directly with the Westfalen-Blatt, the Bielefeld-based rival that also maintains a local presence in Bad Oeynhausen, one of the many towns in Ostwestfalen-Lippe where the two papers face each other. This head-to-head competition, unusual in a German regional press landscape dominated by local monopolies, has historically kept both papers' local coverage sharp: where only one paper reports, the other checks, and readers of the Kurier benefit from a local journalism market that has never been able to rest on its laurels. The rivalry extends to the advertising market, where local businesses can choose between two dailies reaching the town's households. The Neue Westfälische as a whole is among the largest regional dailies in North Rhine-Westphalia, with its local editions spanning the Regierungsbezirk Detmold from Paderborn and Höxter in the south to Minden and Lübbecke in the north. The paper's website, nw.de, carries the local reporting digitally alongside the group's shared content.

History

The Neue Westfälische was created on 3 July 1967 through the merger of the Westfälische Zeitung and the Freie Presse of Bielefeld, two papers with roots reaching back to the Öffentliche Anzeigen des Distriktes Bielefeld of 1811 and the Volkswacht of 1830. The Freie Presse had been founded in 1946 as the Social Democratic daily for the region under British license, reaching more than ninety thousand copies in the 1950s, while the Westfälische Zeitung resumed in 1949 after the end of licensing requirements. Their fusion created the dominant subscription daily of Ostwestfalen-Lippe, a position it has held ever since.

The Bad Oeynhausener Kurier emerged within this structure as the edition for the spa town and its neighbor Löhne, keeping its own title and local newsrooms while drawing its supra-regional pages from Bielefeld. The paper's ownership reflects the unusual media landscape of the region: since 2015 the Neue Westfälische has been owned one hundred percent by the Deutsche Druck- und Verlagsgesellschaft, the media holding of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, continuing an SPD-dominated ownership tradition that reaches back to the Freie Presse. The publisher is the Neue Westfälische GmbH & Co. KG of Bielefeld. Since June 2021 the paper has been printed in Osnabrück following the closure of the Bielefeld press.

Coverage and Content

The edition's local pages follow the life of a spa town and its industrial neighbor in detail. In Bad Oeynhausen the health economy dominates the agenda: the Heart and Diabetes Center, the thermal baths, the Kurpark and the spa administration, the clinics and rehabilitation facilities that employ thousands, and the town's efforts to position itself as a modern health destination while preserving its nineteenth-century spa heritage. In Löhne the paper covers the railway town's industry, its furniture manufacturers, and the town council's work on infrastructure and urban development.

The shared Mantel from Bielefeld delivers the coverage of North Rhine-Westphalian state politics in Düsseldorf, national and international news, business and sports, produced in cooperation with the Lippische Landes-Zeitung of Detmold and the Haller Kreisblatt, with which the NW shares large parts of its regional and national editorial content. Special publications around local elections, the spa season and regional events complement the daily paper, and the edition's journalists cover the council meetings, court sessions and club festivals of their towns as the paper of record for the area. The Kurpark, one of the most beautiful spa parks in Germany, the historic bathhouses and the graduation towers of the salt works give the paper a built heritage to report on alongside the daily news, from restoration projects to the cultural program that fills the park in summer.

Organization and Ownership

The Bad Oeynhausener Kurier is published by the Neue Westfälische GmbH & Co. KG of Bielefeld, which since 2015 has belonged entirely to the Deutsche Druck- und Verlagsgesellschaft, the SPD's media holding. The ddvg is one of the largest regional press owners in Germany, with stakes in dozens of newspapers, and the Neue Westfälische is among its flagship holdings. The local newsrooms in Bad Oeynhausen and Löhne operate under their respective editorial heads, Thorsten Gödecker and Dirk Windmöller, within the decentralized structure characteristic of the paper, which maintains local editions from Bielefeld and Gütersloh to Paderborn, Höxter, Herford, Bünde, Halle and Minden.

This structure, a centrally owned paper with strongly local editions, is the NW's answer to the geography of Ostwestfalen-Lippe: a region of medium-sized towns without a single dominant center, where readers expect their town's name on the masthead and their town's news on the front page. The Bad Oeynhausener Kurier is the edition that delivers exactly that for the spa town on the Weser.

Digital Presence

The digital home of the Bad Oeynhausener Kurier is nw.de, the news portal of the Neue Westfälische, where the Bad Oeynhausen and Löhne edition appears with its own local news stream among the group's editions. The portal publishes continuously updated regional news, the e-paper edition of the printed paper for digital subscribers, photo galleries and the service content of a modern regional site, following the subscription model standard in the German regional press. Social media channels for the local editions distribute the day's stories and drive traffic back to the portal.

For the readers of the spa town, the digital offering extends the paper beyond the breakfast table: the e-paper serves subscribers on tablets, the portal's free content draws in casual readers and the many spa guests who pass through the town, and newsletters deliver the morning's local headlines to inboxes across the district. The transformation from the merged paper of 1967 to a contemporary multi-platform news service is complete, but the edition's core promise has not changed: Bad Oeynhausen's news, reported in Bad Oeynhausen, every working day, for subscribers who have kept faith with their local paper through six decades of media change.
