Bad Rappenauer Bote
The Bad Rappenauer Bote is the local edition of the Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung for Bad Rappenau, the spa town in the Kraichgau between Heidelberg and Heilbronn, and it carries the name of one of Germany's most tradition-rich regional dailies into the northernmost corner of its circulation area. As part of the RNZ, the Heidelberg daily that has been family-owned since its founding in 1945, the Bad Rappenau edition combines locally produced pages for the town and the surrounding Heilbronn district with the shared regional and national section produced in Heidelberg. The paper appears Monday through Saturday in Rheinisch format and shares the rnz.de news portal with the group's editions for Heidelberg, Sinsheim, Mosbach and Buchen.
Overview
The Bad Rappenauer Bote serves Bad Rappenau, a town of some twenty-two thousand inhabitants known for its saltwater thermal springs, its spa gardens and its moated castle, together with the neighboring communities of the western Heilbronn district. The spa status shapes the town's economy and the paper's agenda alike: the thermal baths, the saltwater treatments, the rehabilitation clinics and the Kurpark are standing subjects, and the town's positioning as a health destination within easy reach of both the Rhine-Neckar and Stuttgart metropolitan regions is a story the paper follows year after year. Its readers find the program of the classic German local daily: the town council and district politics, the spa and health economy, the local industry and crafts of the Kraichgau, education and social affairs, the club and association life, and the court and police reporting of the area. The local pages are produced for the Bad Rappenau area, while the Mantel, the regional, national and international section, arrives from the Heidelberg headquarters, where the publishing house sits in the Neugasse.
The Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung as a whole sells 64,589 copies, making it the dominant newspaper of the Heidelberg region and the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan area, even after a circulation decline of more than thirty-eight percent since 1998. Its editions map a territory that stretches from Heidelberg into the Odenwald, the Kraichgau and the Bauland: alongside the main Heidelberg edition there are editions for Sinsheim, Mosbach and Buchen and eleven local editions beneath them, of which the Bad Rappenauer Bote is the one serving the Kraichgau's spa town. The paper's local identity is its commercial asset: readers in Bad Rappenau expect their town's name on the masthead and their town's news on the front page.
History
The Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung was founded on 5 September 1945 under license from the American Information Control Division, the third newspaper licensed in postwar Germany after the Aachener Nachrichten and the Frankfurter Rundschau. Its three founding licensees represented the political currents of the occupation era: the liberal Theodor Heuss, later the first Federal President, the Social Democrat Hermann Knorr and the Communist Rudolf Agricola. Heuss left the paper within weeks to become education minister of Württemberg-Baden, Agricola was expelled by the American military government in 1948 after conflicts over the paper's critical line, and in 1952 Knorr bought out Heuss's share, becoming sole publisher and owner.
The Knorr family has owned the paper ever since. Hermann Knorr's son Winfried took over the publishing house in 1976 and led it, as publisher, managing director and editor-in-chief writing the paper's leading articles for decades, until his death in 2009. The paper's political profile shifted over those decades: left-leaning in its early years, when its critical reporting even led Chancellor Helmut Kohl to refuse it interviews in the 1960s, it is today considered conservatively oriented, though it maintains independent positions on individual issues. Today the third generation is in charge: Inge Höltzcke, née Knorr, is publisher, managing director and co-editor-in-chief alongside Klaus Welzel, with Joachim Knorr as co-publisher and managing director. The paper celebrated its eightieth anniversary in September 2025, a rarity among German regional dailies, most of which have long since been absorbed into publishing groups. The Bad Rappenauer Bote carries this independent, family-owned tradition into its Kraichgau territory.
Coverage and Content
The Bad Rappenau edition's local pages cover the spa town and its surroundings: the town council, the district administration in Heilbronn, the spa business with its thermal baths, saltwater treatments and rehabilitation clinics, and the town's efforts to develop its tourism profile between the metropolitan regions of Rhine-Neckar and Stuttgart. The Kraichgau, the rolling hill country stretching between the Odenwald and the Black Forest, gives the paper its landscape: agriculture, wine villages on its edges, and the small industries of the region's towns.
The shared section from Heidelberg delivers the coverage of Baden-Württemberg state politics in Stuttgart, national and international news, business, culture and sports, produced by a newsroom that has long prided itself on strong regional reporting. The RNZ's numerous local editions are, in the paper's own tradition, an essential element of its success: they allowed it to assert itself against competing papers in its circulation area, past and present, from the Heidelberger Tageblatt, which closed in 1982, to the present-day rivals in the metropolitan region. Special publications around local elections, the spa season and regional anniversaries complement the daily paper, and the edition's journalists cover the institutions of their area as its paper of record.
Organization and Ownership
The Bad Rappenauer Bote is published by the Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung GmbH of Heidelberg, a family-owned publishing house in its third generation. The publishers and managing directors are Inge Höltzcke and Joachim Knorr, and the editors-in-chief are Inge Höltzcke and Klaus Welzel. The paper's independence, its Heidelberg headquarters and its family ownership make it an exception in the southwestern German press landscape, where most titles belong to large groups.
The edition structure is the organizational expression of the paper's market strategy: a strong central newsroom in Heidelberg producing the shared pages, and local newsrooms in the edition towns producing the local sections that give each edition its identity. For Bad Rappenau this means a daily paper that reads as the town's own while drawing on the resources of one of the region's largest newsrooms, a combination that has sustained the paper through the structural crisis of the regional press.
Digital Presence
The digital home of the Bad Rappenauer Bote is rnz.de, the news portal of the Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung, where the Bad Rappenau edition appears with its own local news stream among the group's editions. The portal publishes continuously updated regional news, the e-paper edition of the printed paper for digital subscribers, photo galleries and videos, following the subscription model standard in the German regional press. Social media channels for the individual editions distribute the day's local stories and drive traffic back to the portal.
For a family-owned paper that has navigated eighty years of German media history without selling to a group, the digital presence is the current chapter of a long adaptation: from the licensed paper of 1945 through the decades of the Knorr family's stewardship to a contemporary news operation with print, e-paper and online channels. The Bad Rappenauer Bote's readers encounter this evolution as the daily continuity of their town's paper, in print on the breakfast table and online throughout the day. In a media landscape where family-owned regional dailies have become the exception, the RNZ's eight decades of independence remain its defining characteristic, and the Bad Rappenau edition carries that legacy to the Kraichgau every morning.
