About Bayern 1

Bayern 1

Bayern 1 is the first radio programme of Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR), the public broadcaster of the German state of Bavaria. On the air since 31 January 1948, it is historically the direct successor of BR's original — and until 1950 only — radio programme, and it received its current name in the programme reform of 1 January 1974. Aimed at a middle-aged audience, it combines an oldie-based adult-contemporary music format with news, service information, and comprehensive regional reporting from across Bavaria. According to the Media-Analyse cited by Wikipedia, it reached 3.048 million listeners in the II/2026 survey wave, making it one of Germany's most-listened-to radio programmes.

Overview

Bayern 1 is a classic "Begleitprogramm" — a companion programme designed to accompany listeners through the day with a mix of familiar music, reliable information, and regional identity. Its music format is classified as oldie-based AC (adult contemporary): listenable format radio for adults, centred on pop music mainly from the 1970s to the 1990s, complemented by newer pop and by extensive news and service content. The station's slogan is "Gehört ins Leben" ("Belongs to life").

Broadcasting from Munich, Bayern 1 covers the entire state of Bavaria — Germany's largest state by area — via FM, DAB+ (multiplex 11D), satellite, cable, and livestream. Programme direction is led by Maximilian Berg; the BR intendant is Katja Wildermuth.

History

Bayern 1's history is the history of Bavarian radio itself. Its predecessor was the first — and until 1950 the only — radio programme of the Bayerischer Rundfunk, which was constituted as a public-law institution on 25 January 1949, when the American occupation authorities handed "Radio München" into German hands. The BR's lineage reaches back further: to the "Deutsche Stunde in Bayern", founded in Munich in 1922 and first broadcast on 30 March 1924; through the Nazi era, when it became the regime's "Reichssender München"; to "Radio München", launched by the US forces on 12 May 1945.

In 1949 the BR transmitted its programme for the first time on FM — the first FM broadcaster in Europe — and from 1950 it offered a second radio programme on FM, the future Bayern 2. The BR became a founding member of the ARD, the consortium of German public broadcasters, established on 5 August 1950 in Munich. Between 1949 and 1952 the BR's symphony orchestra and the Munich Radio Orchestra were founded, and the first post-war radio advertising was aired.

The programme reform of 1 January 1974 gave the first programme its official name "Bayern 1" and defined its profile as a full programme (Vollprogramm) for a broad, middle-aged audience. Over the decades the station absorbed format evolutions — including, in more recent years, parts of the older pop repertoire that had previously been at home on Bayern 3 — while keeping its core promise: familiar music, trustworthy news, and Bavaria-wide regional reporting.

Bayerischer Rundfunk: The Parent Broadcaster

Bayern 1 cannot be understood without the institution behind it. Bayerischer Rundfunk, headquartered in Munich, is one of the nine regional broadcasters that form the ARD, and one of its most influential: the ARD itself was founded in Munich on 5 August 1950 with the BR as a founding member. The BR operates nine radio programmes — five on FM and four digital-only — and two television channels, and contributes substantially to the ARD's national offerings.

The BR's cultural footprint extends far beyond broadcasting. Its Symphonieorchester (Symphony Orchestra), founded in 1949, and the Münchner Rundfunkorchester (Munich Radio Orchestra), reconstituted in 1952, are among Europe's leading broadcast orchestras, and the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks (Choir of Bavarian Radio), founded in 1946 as the Rundfunkchor München, has premiered works by composers including Rafael Kubelík and Hans Pfitzner. On television, the BR launched its regional "Studienprogramm" on 22 September 1964 — the first "third programme" of any ARD member — and later established ARD-alpha (originally BR-alpha, 7 January 1998), the ARD's education and culture channel.

This institutional weight gives Bayern 1 resources that few regional radio programmes can match: a statewide network of regional studios and correspondents, access to the BR's news and current-affairs apparatus (including the "Rundschau" television newsroom), and the musical resources of its orchestras and choirs. The BR's revenue allocation — historically around 60 percent for television, 28 percent for radio, with the remainder for technical maintenance and administration — reflects the scale of the operation behind the radio programmes.

Programming

Bayern 1's schedule is built around the dayparted logic of companion radio: morning shows with news, weather, and traffic; daytime music programmes with service elements; and regional windows that root the programme in Bavaria's diverse regions. The music is oldie-based adult contemporary — the hits of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s that form the shared soundtrack of its target generation — with newer pop titles added selectively.

Information is the second pillar. The station provides regular newscasts, comprehensive regional reporting from across Bavaria — from Franconia in the north to Swabia in the west and Old Bavaria in the south and east — and service journalism covering traffic, weather, and consumer topics. The regional dimension is a deliberate editorial priority: in a state as large and internally diverse as Bavaria, Bayern 1 positions itself as the medium that holds the regions together in one programme.

The "Begleitprogramm" concept — literally "accompanying programme" — is central to German public-radio philosophy and to Bayern 1's identity. Unlike appointment-listening formats built around individual star presenters or specialist shows, companion radio is designed to be listenable across the whole day: consistent in tone, reliable in its service elements, and varied enough in music and information to reward both background and attentive listening. Bayern 1's decades-long audience leadership suggests the formula continues to match the daily rhythms of its listeners, from the early-morning "Frühaufdreher" daypart through the working day to the evening programmes.

Coverage and Audience

Bayern 1 broadcasts across Bavaria on FM (dozens of frequencies covering the state), DAB+ (channel 11D), satellite, cable, and internet livestream; its broadcast area also extends via DAB+ into South Tyrol. The Media-Analyse figure of 3.048 million listeners (II/2026) cited by Wikipedia places it among the highest-reach radio programmes in Germany — a reflection of its broad demographic appeal and its entrenched position in Bavarian daily life, from the morning commute to the workplace radio.

Ownership and Funding

Bayern 1 is operated by Bayerischer Rundfunk, the public-law broadcaster for the Free State of Bavaria and a founding member of the ARD. The BR is financed primarily through the broadcasting licence fee (Rundfunkbeitrag) and is supervised by its broadcasting council (Rundfunkrat) and administrative council under the Bavarian broadcasting act. The intendant is Katja Wildermuth; Bayern 1's programme director is Maximilian Berg. As a public-service programme, Bayern 1 operates under the remit defined by the interstate broadcasting treaties, independent of commercial interests.

Digital Presence

Bayern 1's online presence is integrated into the BR's digital platforms at br.de, with a dedicated programme page, livestream, and on-demand audio. The station is listed under its own domain bayern1.de in programme directories. Because the official domain has not been independently load-verified, the website field of this profile is left empty pending verification. The BR's digital strategy treats the radio programmes as full multi-platform brands, with podcasts, social-media channels, and the BR Mediathek extending the linear broadcast into on-demand listening.
