About BBC Earth
BBC Earth
Overview
BBC Earth is a Canadian discretionary television channel devoted to natural history, wildlife, science and factual programming. The channel is owned by Toronto-based Blue Ant Media and is a localized version of the international BBC Earth brand, which Blue Ant operates under licence from BBC Studios, the commercial arm of the BBC. Because Canadian rules restrict foreign ownership of licensed broadcasters, the channel is wholly Canadian-owned; the BBC contributes its brand and its programming library rather than an equity stake. Broadcasting in high definition (1080i), BBC Earth is the Canadian home of the BBC's landmark natural history productions, including the Planet Earth and Blue Planet franchises, alongside factual series fronted by presenters such as David Attenborough, Simon Reeve, Steve Backshall and Brian Cox.
The channel in its current form launched on January 24, 2017, replacing Blue Ant's adventure channel radX, but the underlying service is older: it began in 2006 as Rush HD, one of Canada's first high-definition specialty channels, and its transformation from an extreme-sports service into the Canadian flagship of the BBC's factual brand mirrors the broader shift of Canadian specialty television toward strong international content brands.
History
The channel's licence was granted by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) in April 2006, when John Panikkar, co-founder of Toronto company High Fidelity HDTV, received approval for a service called AHD — short for Adrenaline HD — described in its application as a national English-language Category 2 high-definition specialty service focused on "high-octane, limit-defying human activity and adventure." The channel instead launched on September 5, 2006, as Rush HD, its name and much of its programming licensed from Rainbow Media's Voom HD Networks, operator of the original Rush HD in the United States. Rush HD's schedule centred on high-adventure and extreme sports — snowboarding, windsurfing, bungee jumping and cliff diving. More than a year after the American Rush HD closed, the Canadian channel rebranded as radX on August 23, 2010, broadening its programming to action-oriented films, outdoor lifestyle, travel and reality series aimed mainly at men.
On December 21, 2011, High Fidelity HDTV announced it had agreed to be purchased outright by Blue Ant Media, the Toronto broadcaster founded by Michael MacMillan; Blue Ant initially took a 29.9 per cent stake, acquiring the remainder following CRTC approval. Five years later, on December 6, 2016, Blue Ant announced an agreement with BBC Worldwide to rebrand radX as BBC Earth in January 2017. Blue Ant had an existing relationship with the BBC, and MacMillan himself had helped launch the earlier BBC Canada channel while at Alliance Atlantis. The transition took place on January 23–24, 2017: radX broadcast its final program in the early hours of January 23, a BBC Earth countdown followed, and regular BBC Earth programming began on January 24, 2017. The new channel launched free of commercial interruption, with a free preview reported by the Financial Post to reach some five million Canadian homes. Its marquee attraction arrived weeks later: the Canadian premiere of Planet Earth II on February 18, 2017, the same date the series premiered in the United States on BBC America. "We've found a kindred spirit in Blue Ant Media," said Ann Sarnoff, president of BBC Worldwide North America, at the announcement. In 2021, Blue Ant extended the relationship by launching BBC First, a sister channel devoted to BBC drama and comedy, adapted from another of its services.
Programming and Content
BBC Earth's schedule is anchored by the BBC Natural History Unit's flagship productions. The channel's program library, as presented on its own site, includes Planet Earth III, Blue Planet II, Frozen Planet II, Seven Worlds, One Planet, Mammals and Eden: Untamed Planet, together with the more recent landmark series Kingdom and Human. Around those tentpoles runs a schedule of presenter-led factual entertainment: Simon Reeve's travel and nature series, including Wilderness with Simon Reeve — billed by the channel with new episodes on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT — Incredible Journeys with Simon Reeve, Scandinavia with Simon Reeve and Simon Reeve's South America; Steve Backshall's Expedition and the family wildlife series Deadly 60; Brian Cox's space and physics programs, including Solar System, The Planets and Brian Cox's Adventures in Space and Time; and Dara Ó Briain's Wonders of the Sun, Wonders of the Moon and Wonders of Volcanoes. Science and technology titles such as AI Confidential with Hannah Fry and Cosmic Vistas: A New View, and long-running factual staples such as Life Below Zero and Changing Planet II, complete the mix.
Although the channel is best known for licensed BBC content, it also sits within Blue Ant Media's original-production pipeline. Announcing its 2026–27 slate of original unscripted programming, Blue Ant confirmed that new Canadian originals would premiere across its domestic specialty networks, BBC Earth among them, before rolling out to its international streaming channels — a model that uses Canadian premieres to feed the company's global distribution business. The channel thus operates both as an importer of the BBC's biggest factual brands and as one of the Canadian outlets for its owner's own productions.
Audience and Reach
BBC Earth is distributed nationally by Canada's major television service providers as a discretionary channel, generally offered in factual and documentary packages or as part of premium tiers, and its programs are available in high definition. At its January 2017 launch, the channel's free preview was reported to reach approximately five million homes, reflecting the carriage radX had already established. The channel does not publish audience ratings, and none are claimed here; its significance in the market is instead indicated by its role as the exclusive Canadian television home of the BBC's natural history catalogue, whose series — Planet Earth II and its successors — are among the most widely watched factual programs in the world.
Digital Presence
The channel's website, bbcearth.ca, publishes program pages for its current series, scheduling highlights and tune-in information, and promotes new episodes as they premiere. The site currently fronts series such as Wilderness with Simon Reeve, Dr. Ann's Secret Lives and Deadly 60 with their weekly time slots, reflecting a schedule that continues to refresh with new BBC factual titles. BBC Earth also benefits from its owner's wider digital operations: since Blue Ant Media's emergence as a public company in 2025, its channels have been paired with a growing stable of streaming services and free ad-supported channels, and in October 2025 the company acquired the documentary streaming service MagellanTV, further extending the digital shelf on which its factual programming travels.
Ownership and Organisation
BBC Earth is owned by Blue Ant Media, headquartered in Toronto, Ontario; the BBC Earth brand and programming are licensed from BBC Studios, a subsidiary of the BBC, while ownership and the CRTC licence remain entirely Canadian, in keeping with foreign-ownership rules. The channel was originally owned by High Fidelity HDTV and passed to Blue Ant under the acquisition announced in December 2011; CRTC ownership records for Blue Ant's discretionary services show the broadcasting assets held within the group's broadcasting subsidiary, renamed Blue Ant Broadcasting Limited in August 2025. Blue Ant itself was transformed in 2025 through a reverse takeover of Boat Rocker Media, after which the combined company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange as Blue Ant Media Corporation (TSX: BAMI), with the original Blue Ant business — including its channel portfolio — as its core. BBC Earth's sister channels in Canada are BBC First, Cottage Life, Love Nature, Makeful, Smithsonian Channel and T+E, a portfolio that makes Blue Ant one of the largest independent owners of factual and lifestyle channels in the country.
Contact and Availability
BBC Earth is available across Canada through television service providers, typically within factual-channel packages; channel positions vary by provider and region. No public business email address is listed for the channel itself.
