About BBC First

BBC First

Overview

BBC First is a Canadian English-language high-definition discretionary television channel owned by Blue Ant Media and operated under a brand licence from BBC Studios. It is the localized Canadian version of the international BBC First service, presenting British drama, comedy, entertainment and factual programming, much of it originating from the BBC.

The Canadian channel is not owned by BBC Studios: Canada's foreign-ownership rules for broadcasting require Canadian control, so Blue Ant operates the service itself and licenses the BBC First brand and programming. It launched on March 16, 2021, replacing Blue Ant's HIFI channel, and is distributed nationally by cable, satellite and IPTV providers as an advertiser-supported service. Its head office functions are in Toronto, alongside Blue Ant's other channels.

History

The channel's licence has a long lineage. In August 2005, the CRTC granted John S. Panikkar, co-founder of High Fidelity HDTV, a licence for ArtefactHD, a Category 2 HD specialty service "devoted to collectors and their collections," which would showcase creations, museum and gallery tours, architecture and design. The service launched on March 12, 2006, as Treasure HD, with its name and much of its programming licensed from Rainbow Media, owner of the American Voom HD Networks channel of the same name. It debuted on Bell ExpressVu; BCE promoted the launch of Treasure HD alongside its sister service Oasis HD as part of the satellite provider's early high-definition offering. Its early factual schedule included Secrets of the Exhibit, Art in Progress, Treasure Divers and Romance in Stone. When the American Treasure HD ceased broadcasting in 2009, the Canadian channel broadened its remit to include music — classic rock, jazz and classical — and films.

In August 2011 the channel was rebranded as HIFI, emphasizing music and arts programming under the slogan music+art. That fall, HIFI partnered with Toronto jazz station JAZZ.FM91 as presenting sponsor of the station's commercial-free Sundays, taking over a role previously held by sister channel Oasis HD. On December 21, 2011, High Fidelity HDTV agreed to be acquired by Blue Ant Media; the transaction was completed on August 1, 2012, following CRTC approval (Decision 2012-419). Under Blue Ant, HIFI gradually shifted from its arts remit toward general entertainment — a move evident by 2016 — and in 2018 it became the Canadian home of new episodes of The Graham Norton Show.

Blue Ant announced in March 2021 that HIFI would be relaunched as BBC First on March 16, 2021, expanding the partnership with BBC Studios that had produced BBC Earth — created from the former radX — in January 2017. The BBC First brand itself had been created by the BBC as a global premium entertainment brand, first launched in Australia in August 2014, and the Canadian channel was its arrival in this market. "Canadians love British television, and Blue Ant Media's expanded partnership with BBC Studios underpins our commitment to invest in high-quality, distinctive programs we know our audiences will enjoy," said Jamie Schouela, Blue Ant's president of global channels and media, at the announcement. The launch was promoted with a month-long nationwide free preview running to April 16, 2021, and unlike the premium HD services from which it descended, BBC First was launched as an advertiser-supported channel, open to advertising and sponsorship. BBC First effectively succeeded BBC Canada, the similarly formatted channel that Corus Entertainment had closed on December 31, 2020: several programs associated with the old channel, including Top Gear and Antiques Roadshow, carried over to BBC First. There was a personal thread to the succession — Blue Ant founder Michael MacMillan had been an executive at Alliance Atlantis, the company that originally launched BBC Canada.

Programming and Content

BBC First's launch slate combined premium British scripted series with entertainment and factual titles, including Death in Paradise, the British version of The Office, Top Gear and The Graham Norton Show. Although the BBC First brand is primarily associated with scripted programming, the Canadian version also carries unscripted, factual and reality series, along with reruns drawn from Blue Ant's programming libraries to meet Canadian content requirements.

By mid-2024, a large share of the schedule was being devoted to British-produced game and quiz shows, including The Chase, Impossible, QI, and the British and UK-recorded Australian versions of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! Program listings published for November 2025 show the pattern continuing — comedy such as Friday Night Dinner and Two Doors Down alongside Antiques Roadshow, The Graham Norton Show and Canadian library titles such as Griff's Canadian Adventure and Ice Vikings.

Audience and Reach

Blue Ant Media does not publish ratings or subscriber numbers for BBC First, and none are claimed here. The channel is carried nationally by Canadian television providers and was introduced with a month-long free preview across the country in March–April 2021, a standard mechanism for building sampling of a relaunched discretionary service. Its distribution sits within Blue Ant's portfolio of specialty channels, which providers typically package in entertainment and theme tiers.

Digital Presence

The channel's official website is bbcfirst.ca, which carries schedule information and program highlights. BBC First programming is also promoted through Blue Ant Media's corporate site and social media channels, and full daily schedules are published by television listings services — listings for the channel run continuously through late 2025, documenting an active daily schedule of British comedy, drama, quiz and factual programming. The service does not operate a standalone subscription streaming platform in Canada; its programs are available through the on-demand platforms of participating television providers.

Ownership and Organisation

BBC First is owned by Blue Ant Media and licensed in Canada, according to the CRTC's ownership records, to Blue Ant Television General Partnership — a partnership of Blue Ant Broadcasting Limited and 8946337 Canada Limited. The holding structure was tidied in a corporate reorganization approved by the CRTC in 2022 (Decision 2022-137), which transferred Blue Ant's partnership interests to a single wholly owned subsidiary; that subsidiary was renamed Blue Ant Broadcasting Limited in August 2025. The BBC First brand and much of its programming are licensed from BBC Studios under Blue Ant's expanded partnership with the British broadcaster, which also underpins the Canadian BBC Earth channel. BBC Studios' president for the Americas, Rebecca Glashow, described Blue Ant at the BBC First launch as a partner that "intuitively understand[s] the BBC brand, in-market needs, and how to connect with audiences."

Blue Ant Media was founded in Toronto in 2011 by Michael MacMillan, a former chairman and chief executive of Alliance Atlantis. It grew from the acquisitions of Glassbox Television and High Fidelity HDTV into one of Canada's largest independent broadcasters, with a channel portfolio that includes BBC Earth, Cottage Life, Love Nature, Makeful, T+E and Smithsonian Channel, together with production and distribution operations. On August 1, 2025, Blue Ant completed a reverse takeover of Boat Rocker Media and became the publicly traded Blue Ant Media Corporation (TSX: BAMI), with Blue Ant Media Inc. as its wholly owned operating subsidiary.

Contact and Availability

BBC First is available across Canada through participating cable, satellite and IPTV providers, generally within entertainment theme packages; channel positions vary by provider and region. Program and schedule information is published at bbcfirst.ca. Business inquiries for the channel are handled through its owner and operator, Blue Ant Media, headquartered in Toronto, Ontario.
