About BBC Radio Scotland

BBC Radio Scotland is the BBC's national radio network for Scotland, broadcasting in English a broad mix of news, sport, music, talk, arts and entertainment from its Glasgow headquarters. As the English-language counterpart to the Gaelic service Radio nan Gàidheal, it is the principal BBC radio voice of the nation, reaching close to 800,000 listeners a week. From the flagship breakfast news programme to football phone-ins, folk music sessions and long-running comedy, Radio Scotland reflects the country's conversation back to itself, operating from the BBC Scotland studios at Pacific Quay on the banks of the Clyde with contributions from bases in Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

History and Launch

The name Radio Scotland has been in use since 17 December 1973, when the first BBC Radio Scotland broadcast went out, a fortnight earlier than planned because of the national emergency of the miners' strike era. On Hogmanay 1973, the station launched Good Morning Scotland, its flagship breakfast news programme, presented initially by John Milne and David Findlay. For its first years, however, Radio Scotland was not a full-time network but the Scottish opt-out service of BBC Radio 4, known formally on air as "BBC Scotland Radio 4".

The establishment of Radio Scotland as a separate, full-time network came on 23 November 1978. The change was made possible when BBC Radio 4 moved from medium wave to long wave, becoming a fully UK-wide network and freeing new VHF (FM) transmitters so that Radio 4 and Radio Scotland no longer had to share frequencies. For its first decade, the new station broadcast only during the day, so that Radio 4 could still be heard on Radio Scotland's transmitters in the evening to compensate for poorer medium-wave reception after dark; it was not until the early 1990s that Radio 4 was available on FM across all of Scotland. Regional opt-out services were added over the years, with stations in Inverness and Aberdeen from 1976, Orkney and Shetland from 1977, and Selkirk and Dumfries from 1983, embedding the network in communities across the country. Planned opt-outs in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee were never realised.

Ownership

BBC Radio Scotland is owned and operated by BBC Scotland, the Scottish division of the BBC, and ultimately by the BBC itself, funded through the television licence fee. It operates within the BBC's nations-and-regions radio portfolio alongside BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Ulster and BBC Radio Foyle, and is regulated by Ofcom. The station is led from BBC Scotland's Pacific Quay headquarters in Glasgow, one of the corporation's largest production centres outside London. In 2025 the station came under new leadership with the appointment of Victoria Easton-Riley, a former Bauer Media executive, as head of audio and events, tasked with revitalising the station's output and audience.

Format and Programming

Radio Scotland's format is a full-service national speech-and-music mix: news, sport, music, talk, arts, comedy, drama, history and lifestyle. Mornings are built around news and current affairs, middays around phone-ins and magazine programming, afternoons around music and conversation, and evenings around specialist music, arts and sport. The station's speech output is underpinned by BBC Scotland's news-gathering operation, giving it formidable strength in Scottish politics, not least at Holyrood, in Westminster coverage with a Scottish angle, and in community stories from Shetland to the Borders. Music programming spans contemporary Scottish artists, folk and traditional music, country, jazz and classical, with a deliberate commitment to new Scottish talent.

Sport is a cornerstone of the schedule. The station carries live commentary on Scottish football, including the Scottish Premiership, and its sports output extends across rugby, golf and shinty. The arts are served through dedicated programmes covering books, theatre, film and visual arts, while comedy has a distinguished place in the station's history, with Radio Scotland long regarded as a nursery for Scottish comic talent.

Flagship Shows and Presenters

Good Morning Scotland has been the station's flagship since its launch on Hogmanay 1973. Modelled on Radio 4's Today programme, it provides agenda-setting news, interviews and analysis for Scotland's mornings, and for much of its history was presented by long-serving hosts including Gary Robertson and Laura Maxwell, with support from presenters such as Graham Stewart, Laura McIver and Lucy Whyte. Its past presenter roster reads like a history of Scottish broadcasting, including John Milne, Douglas Kynoch, Mary Marquis, Eddie Mair, Derek Bateman and Aasmah Mir.

The mid-morning phone-in became one of the station's most listened-to slots under Kaye Adams, who presented her morning show from 2010 until 2025, when she left following an internal investigation; Adams remains a familiar television face as an anchor of ITV's Loose Women. Stephen Jardine has also been a prominent mid-morning voice. In sport, Off the Ball, presented by Stuart Cosgrove and Tam Cowan, is a genuine institution: a Saturday football show that mixes match coverage with irreverent humour and has run for decades, spawning a successful podcast. The station's music presenters champion Scottish artists across folk, indie and traditional genres, while its arts and books coverage draws on some of Scotland's best-known writers and critics.

Broadcast Area and Frequencies

BBC Radio Scotland broadcasts across the whole of Scotland. Its principal FM frequencies span 92.5 to 94.7 MHz, varying by transmitter, and it also broadcasts on AM at 810 kHz. On digital radio it is carried on the Scottish DAB multiplexes (11B, 11C and 12D), and on digital television via Freeview channel 711 in Scotland, Freesat 712, Sky 0114 and Virgin Media 930. Its RDS identifier is "BBC Scot". Beyond Scotland, the station is available UK-wide through BBC Sounds and on cable and satellite television, serving the Scottish diaspora across Britain.

Audience and Ratings

According to RAJAR, BBC Radio Scotland broadcasts to a weekly audience of 793,000 listeners with a listening share of 5.7 per cent as of October 2025. The BBC has described the station as the most listened-to station broadcasting from Scotland, and recent figures showed reach growing year on year, with the corporation reporting an increase to 844,000 weekly listeners in one recent quarter. The station's audience is loyal and notably engaged, particularly around news, sport and phone-in programming, though in common with speech radio across the UK it faces the challenge of attracting younger listeners in an era of podcasts and on-demand audio.

Digital and Streaming

Radio Scotland is available live and on demand through BBC Sounds, where programmes are published as catch-up audio and podcasts, including the popular Off the Ball podcast. The station streams online and through the BBC Sounds app, smart speakers and connected devices, and its journalism is integrated with BBC Scotland's digital news operation, with stories, clips and interviews shared across the BBC website and social media. BBC Scotland's bases in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Inverness all contribute to a digital output designed to serve audiences across the country and the Scottish diaspora worldwide.

Cultural Impact

For more than four decades as a full-time network, Radio Scotland has been the soundtrack to Scottish public life. Good Morning Scotland has set the news agenda for generations of politicians, business leaders and citizens; its interviews with first ministers and party leaders are moments of genuine national consequence. The station's football coverage, above all Off the Ball, is woven into the rituals of the Scottish game, while its championing of Scottish music, from folk sessions to new indie bands, has given the country's artists a national platform. Its comedy output has nurtured performers who went on to national and international careers. In a nation with its own parliament, legal system and sporting culture, Radio Scotland functions as a daily act of cultural self-definition.

Sister Stations

Radio Scotland's principal sister station is BBC Radio nan Gàidheal, the BBC's Scottish Gaelic radio service, which shares the Pacific Quay base and serves Gaelic-speaking audiences across Scotland. The network also encompasses BBC Radio Orkney and BBC Radio Shetland, the dedicated opt-out services for the Northern Isles, alongside the regional opt-outs in Aberdeen, Inverness, Selkirk and Dumfries. Within the wider BBC, Radio Scotland sits alongside BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru, BBC Radio Ulster and the English local radio network, forming the corporation's nations-and-regions radio family.

Recent Developments

Radio Scotland is in the midst of its most significant transformation in years. Under new head of audio and events Victoria Easton-Riley, appointed in 2025, the station has embarked on a major schedule restructure. The long-running Good Morning Scotland, on air in various forms since 1973, has been replaced by a new Radio Scotland Breakfast programme presented by Martin Geissler and Laura Maciver, a change the BBC says is part of building a distinctive morning offer for listeners across Scotland. The departure of Kaye Adams from her mid-morning show in 2025, following an upheld internal investigation, marked the end of a fifteen-year era. The BBC says the changes are about delivering the stories, conversation and analysis that matter most to Scottish audiences, though they have prompted vigorous debate among loyal listeners about the future direction of the nation's station.
