About BCBusiness

BCBusiness

Overview

BCBusiness is British Columbia's regional business magazine, covering the people, companies and economic forces shaping Canada's westernmost province. Published from Burnaby by Canada Wide Media, it pairs a monthly print magazine with a website updated daily, and it has served as the province's business publication of record for more than five decades. Its own mission, as carried in industry directories, is "to inform, empower, celebrate and advocate for British Columbia's current and aspiring leaders."

The magazine's territory is the whole of the British Columbia economy: real estate and development, technology, natural resources, retail, tourism, agriculture and the public policy that touches them. Its reporting ranges from boardroom profiles and deal coverage to service journalism for executives and entrepreneurs, and it is known nationally for two editorial franchises — an annual Top 100 ranking of the province's highest-grossing companies, and a Top 30 Under 30 celebration of young achievers. In a province whose business press is otherwise dominated by daily newspapers and national titles published from Toronto, BCBusiness occupies the distinct niche of a magazine written exclusively about, and for, the B.C. business community.

History

BCBusiness dates its founding to 1973. When the magazine turned 40 in 2013, its publisher marked the anniversary with a comprehensive relaunch under newly appointed editor-in-chief Tom Gierasimczuk, formerly editor-in-chief of Marketing magazine, who also served as Canada Wide Media's vice-president of editorial. The March 2013 issue carried a total redesign, and the print relaunch was paired with a new website at bcbusiness.ca, a daily online newsletter and the title's first iPad edition — an early statement that the magazine intended to operate as a daily newsroom as well as a monthly. At the time of the redesign, the magazine reported a total print circulation of 26,000 and more than 13,600 subscribers, figures published by Marketing magazine in its coverage of the relaunch.

The relaunch also seeded the magazine's best-known younger franchise: the inaugural Top 30 Under 30 issue appeared in April 2014, under editor-in-chief Matt O'Grady, who inherited the idea from Gierasimczuk after the latter moved into the publisher's role. The list — honouring entrepreneurs, civic leaders and other notables under thirty — became an annual fixture aimed squarely at a new generation of B.C. business readers.

For most of its life the magazine belonged to Canada Wide Media Limited, the Burnaby publishing house built by Peter Legge, who famously began in 1976 by purchasing a ten-cent magazine — a bankrupt television listings title — and grew it into Western Canada's largest independent media company. Canada Wide's portfolio around BCBusiness included TVWeek, BCAA Magazine (Westworld), BCLiving and, from 2018, Vancouver Magazine and Western Living. That era ended in February 2023, when Alive Publishing Group, the Richmond, B.C. publisher of the natural health magazine alive, purchased Canada Wide Media — a deal the magazine reported in its own pages on February 28, 2023. BCBusiness has continued publishing under the new ownership, with Canada Wide Media operating as the group's Burnaby-based magazine division.

Content and Coverage

The print magazine is organized around the sectors that drive the provincial economy. Features profile founders, chief executives and dealmakers; explainers unpack housing, taxation, trade and labour policy; and recurring service franchises translate economic change into personal terms — the magazine's "Money Makers" series, for example, asks British Columbia workers across occupations what they earn and what they consider rich. Business coverage of consumer-facing industries, from restaurant groups to mountain resorts, gives the title a broader texture than a pure trade publication.

Online, bcbusiness.ca operates as a daily business news service. Articles published in September 2026, in the weeks before this profile was compiled, included a $2-billion industrial real estate venture between Beedie and La Caisse, an examination of how clean power and LED technology are reshaping B.C.'s greenhouse industry, reporting on artificial intelligence in provincial agriculture, a profile of former Telus chief executive Darren Entwistle, and coverage of Burnaby's experiments with family rental housing. The mix — hard business news, sector analysis, executive profiles and a measure of business-adjacent lifestyle coverage — mirrors the print title's formula at daily speed.

The magazine's signature editorial product is its annual Top 100, a ranking of British Columbia's highest-grossing companies, broken out by sector, which has run for decades and is widely cited by the companies it lists. The 2026 edition ranked the province's science and technology companies on 2025 revenue; BCBusiness reported that the sector's top ten generated a combined $2 billion in 2025, and companies such as Burnaby-based IT services firm Microserve publicized their placements — No. 4 in science and technology — in September 2026.

Audience and Reach

BCBusiness is aimed at owners, executives, managers and professionals working in British Columbia, together with the entrepreneurs the province's start-up economy produces in large numbers. Its readership is inherently regional and senior: the audience advertisers buy is the province's decision-making class, reached through paid and controlled print circulation, newsstand sales in B.C., and the website's daily traffic.

The most concrete circulation figures in the public record are the ones published at the 2013 relaunch — total print circulation of 26,000 with more than 13,600 subscribers — and they are best treated as a dated benchmark rather than a current count, since the publisher does not release a current audited figure for the title. The durability of the audience is better evidenced by behaviour: the Top 100 rankings remain a reference point that listed companies promote in their own communications, and the magazine's daily online output sustains a readership well beyond the print subscriber base, distributed through newsletters and social channels including its @BCBusiness accounts.

Digital Presence

The magazine's digital operation dates from the 2013 relaunch, when the daily newsletter and rebuilt website turned a monthly into a daily habit; the newsletter launched with roughly four new stories a day, a cadence the site has maintained ever since. In 2026 the site continues to publish multiple stories daily across business news, sectors, real estate, technology and careers, and its content is syndicated through Canadian digital news aggregators.

Digital editions of the print magazine are distributed alongside the website, and the brand maintains active social media channels used to circulate both daily stories and the annual franchises. The Top 100 and Top 30 Under 30 lists are published online in searchable form, extending their useful life well past the print issue dates and making them a persistent reference for the provincial business community.

Ownership and Organisation

BCBusiness is published by Canada Wide Media Limited of Burnaby, British Columbia, and since February 2023 Canada Wide has been owned by Alive Publishing Group Inc. of Richmond, B.C. Alive Publishing Group, publisher of alive magazine since 1975, is one of Canada's larger independent consumer publishers, and its acquisition of Canada Wide brought together the province's principal natural-health publisher and its principal regional magazine house.

Within Canada Wide, the magazine has historically been led by an editor-in-chief supported by section editors redistributed across platforms — a model put in place at the 2013 relaunch, when editors were assigned to sectors such as technology, natural resources and marketing across print, web and newsletter. Tom Gierasimczuk served as editor-in-chief from 2013 before becoming publisher; Matt O'Grady held the editor-in-chief's chair in the mid-2010s; and the Magazine Association of BC's directory listed Nick Rockel as editor-in-chief in 2022. Anicka Quin, a veteran of the group's titles, was named Canada Wide's editorial director in 2023. Day-to-day, the Burnaby newsroom produces both the monthly magazine and the daily website from the same staff.

Contact and Availability

BCBusiness is published monthly in print and distributed across British Columbia by subscription and newsstand sale, with digital editions available online. The magazine's website is bcbusiness.ca, which carries the daily news service, the current issue's features, the Top 100 and Top 30 Under 30 archives, and subscription offers.

The publisher, Canada Wide Media Limited, is based in Burnaby, British Columbia; a Magazine Association of BC directory listing gave the magazine's telephone contact as 604-299-7311. Advertising, subscription and editorial enquiries are handled through the contact channels published on the magazine's website.
