About Beef Central
Beef Central
Overview
Beef Central is a free online news and market intelligence service devoted exclusively to the Australian beef and cattle industry. Published from Brisbane, Queensland, at beefcentral.com, it describes itself as a "premium news and market intelligence service" that is nonetheless free for all readers, funded by advertising rather than subscriptions. The site is updated every day with reporting written specifically for beef industry stakeholders — cattle producers, lotfeeders, processors, live exporters, stock and station agents, researchers, service companies and government — and is distributed nationally through its website and a free daily email newsletter. Beef Central is independently owned and produced by two of Australia's most experienced rural journalists, Jon Condon and James Nason, and it is the founding title of a small network of single-commodity news sites that later grew to include Sheep Central, Grain Central, Property Central, Carbon Central and AgTech Central.
History
Beef Central was launched on 11 May 2011 by Jon Condon and James Nason, who had both left long careers in corporate agricultural print media — principally Fairfax/Rural Press — to start the venture. Marking the site's tenth anniversary in May 2021, Condon recalled the day the pair "left the comfortable cloak of corporate media and stepped off a cliff to launch Beef Central." The launch was a deliberate bet that a dedicated, single-commodity digital news service could serve the beef industry better than the state-based rural newspapers of the time, which spread their coverage across many commodities and regions.
Jon Condon brought deep industry roots to the venture. He spent his early life in the Northern Territory, where his family built and operated an export beef processing plant at Katherine and ran a cattle property on the Drysdale River in the West Kimberley. He holds a business degree in marketing and communications, spent most of his early career as national beef writer with Fairfax/Rural Press Ltd, and his publisher profile records more than four decades specialising in reporting on the red meat and livestock industries. His writing has won the Premier of Queensland's Export Achievement Award (1997) and Dalgety National Rural Journalism Awards in 1985 and 1990. In May 2021 he was inducted into the Rural Press Club Journalism Hall of Fame, and in August 2023 he received the North Australia Beef Research Council medal for Communication and Extension Services.
James Nason grew up on his family's sheep, cattle and grain property at Surat in western Queensland, studied journalism and business at the University of Southern Queensland, and began his career with a cadetship at the Western Sun at Charleville. His 16-year career with Rural Press included national news writing and senior editorial roles in Queensland and Victoria, and reporting from Roma, home of Australia's largest weekly cattle sale. He was named Rural Press Agricultural Publishing's editorial person of the year in 2007 and won Queensland's Excellence in Rural Journalism award in 2010. In July 2019, Condon and Nason jointly received the Australian Beef Industry Foundation's Howard Yelland Award for services to the Australian beef industry.
Programming and Content
Beef Central's coverage follows the whole beef supply chain. Dedicated sections cover production, processing, lotfeeding, live export, genetics, property and recruitment, alongside general industry news, market and price reporting, supply and demand updates, weather information and research and development news. A homepage Industry Dashboard aggregates live market and company data drawn from sources including Meat & Livestock Australia's National Livestock Reporting Service, Jarden, NAB, the ASX, Steiner Consulting and the Bureau of Meteorology.
Regular features include a weekly genetics review written by genetics editor Alastair Rayner, South East Asia market reporting by Dr Ross Ainsworth, live export commentary by Dr Michael Patching, and contributions from United States beef industry analyst Steve Kay. The site also produces The Weekly Grill, a podcast hosted by Kerry Lonergan, which by October 2026 was in its sixth season, interviewing industry figures and covering issues such as rural education, trade policy and workforce challenges. Opinion pieces from industry leaders — in October 2026, for example, an article by National Farmers' Federation president Hamish McIntyre on the Australia–EU trade deal — appear alongside staff reporting. Content is published daily, and October 2026 editions carried same-week news, production advice, live export analysis and market reporting, confirming the service remains in active daily operation.
Audience and Reach
Beef Central is aimed squarely at people who make their living from beef, from paddock to plate: commercial and stud cattle producers across northern and southern Australia, feedlot operators, meat processors and exporters, live export companies, saleyard and agency businesses, and the research, government and corporate sectors that serve them. Its testimonials page carries endorsements from readers in every segment — graziers in the Northern Territory, Queensland and Victoria, a past chairman of Meat & Livestock Australia, past presidents of the Cattle Council of Australia and the Australian Lot Feeders' Association, processors and retailers — indicating a readership that spans the industry's leadership as well as working producers. Because the service is free and delivered by email and web, its reach extends beyond Australia to international readers with an interest in the Australian beef trade, supported by its overseas correspondents and commentators.
Digital Presence
Beef Central is a digital-only publication. Its website, beefcentral.com, carries the full archive of daily reporting back to 2011, organised by section and searchable, together with the Industry Dashboard data service and the Weekly Grill podcast. The free daily email newsletter is the main distribution channel, delivering headlines to subscribers each day; readers register through the website. The founders and their sites maintain a presence on social media, including the publishers' individual accounts, and Beef Central content is frequently cited and syndicated by other rural media. The site carries a published complaints policy for editorial content and reader testimonials, and its sister titles Sheep Central, Grain Central, Property Central, Carbon Central and AgTech Central extend the same free, advertising-supported model into adjoining commodity areas.
Ownership and Organisation
Beef Central is independently owned and produced by its publishers, Jon Condon and James Nason, who both write and edit for the site; Condon and Nason are listed as the editorial contacts. Business development and advertising are handled by advertising contacts Matt Hatchard and Nikki Nason. The editorial team is supported by a national and international network of specialist contributors and analysts, including genetics editor Alastair Rayner and correspondents covering South East Asia and the United States. The business is based in Brisbane, Queensland, with the Condon and Nason families' own grazing backgrounds in the Northern Territory, the Kimberley and western Queensland informing its editorial outlook. As an independent, advertising-funded publisher, the business has remained in the hands of its two founders since 2011 while expanding into the sister Central titles.
