About bermuda.funk

bermuda.funk

bermuda.funk is a free radio station for the Rhine-Neckar triangle around Mannheim and Heidelberg in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, broadcasting since 2000. Operated by the registered association Freies Radio Rhein-Neckar e. V., the station transmits on FM in Heidelberg (105.4 MHz) and Mannheim (89.6 MHz), on cable across the region, and via livestream. Its programme is multilingual — German, English, Spanish, Akan, and Persian — and volunteer-produced. bermuda.funk is organised with the other free radios of Baden-Württemberg in the Assoziation Freier Gesellschaftsfunk (AFF) and is a member of the Bundesverband Freier Radios (BFR) at the national level.

Overview

The name "bermuda.funk" plays on the Bermuda Triangle — a self-deprecating joke about a station that, in its early years, seemed to vanish and reappear in the region's media landscape. Today it is a fixture of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region's alternative culture. The station's studios are located in the Kulturzentrum Alte Feuerwache (Old Fire Station) in Mannheim, a major cultural venue that also hosts concerts and events — placing the radio station at the heart of the city's independent scene.

As a free radio, bermuda.funk is non-commercial and access-open: volunteers produce programmes on politics, culture, music, and community affairs, with airtime for migrant communities and minority languages. The station shares its FM frequencies with the independent campus radio radioaktiv, the student broadcaster for Mannheim, Ludwigshafen, and Heidelberg, which transmits 46 hours weekly on the same 89.6 and 105.4 MHz frequencies. bermuda.funk itself broadcasts 122 hours per week: Monday to Friday from 12:00 to 18:00 and from 20:00 to midnight (Monday to Wednesday also through the night until 7:00 a.m.), and all day on Saturdays and Sundays except Sunday 20:00–22:00. The transmitters are low-power installations — 0.05 kW on the Königstuhl above Heidelberg and 0.1 kW in Mannheim's Neckarstadt — typical of the non-commercial local radio sector, where limited power keeps costs manageable while serving the urban core.

History

The initiative Freies Radio Rhein-Neckar was founded in 1998. In October 1999 it went on air for the first time under the name "festival.radio": an eleven-day FM broadcast accompanying the 48th International Film Festival Mannheim-Heidelberg — a festival radio that demonstrated both the technical feasibility and the audience appetite for an independent station in the region.

Regular bermuda.funk programming began in autumn 2000 in Heidelberg, expanding to Mannheim in December 2003. On 21 July 2008 the station was relicensed by the Baden-Württemberg State Institute for Communication (LfK) for a further eight years, securing its medium-term future. On 20 November 2010 the station celebrated its tenth broadcasting anniversary at the Alte Feuerwache in Mannheim. The twentieth anniversary planned for 2020 was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and instead celebrated in 2023 — the 23rd anniversary of regular broadcasting and the 25th anniversary of the association — with a series of events in and around Mannheim. The anniversary programme included a birthday party at Disco Zwei on 30 September 2023, with techno and drum'n'bass from the station's own DJs — including the bermuda.funk Clubnight, Ferrytales-Musik, Operating Tracks On Air, Records Revisited, Latino, and BetterTake2 — and a screening of the pirate-radio film "Radio Rock Revolution" (The Boat That Rocked) at the Cinema Quadrat, introduced by the station's "fuzzy" film-tips editorial team. A quarter-century after the 1998 initiative, the anniversary celebrated a station that had, in the organisers' words, long since stopped merely dreaming the dream of free radio.

Programming

The programme is produced by volunteers and reflects the Rhine-Neckar region's diversity. Multilingual strands in English, Spanish, Akan, and Persian give airtime to migrant communities, while German-language programming covers local politics, culture, and music from the free-radio perspective. The station's editorial teams work within the association's democratic structures, and programme exchange with other free radios takes place through the BFR's audio portal.

The schedule is built around long-running magazine strands. "frei.raum", the Saturday programme, carries series such as "Down in New Orleans" — a three-part trilogy exploring the city's music from the Neville Brothers via Dr. John to the Meters, alongside its food culture, Mardi Gras carnival, and voodoo traditions. "lokal.global" is the socio-political magazine for Mannheim and the Rhine-Neckar triangle, tackling issues such as military versus social spending with guests from across the political spectrum. "fuzzy – Kultur im Delta" covers the region's cultural life, from the Guitar Summit at Mannheim's Rosengarten to the enjoy jazz festival, with book and film tips in every edition. The "HÖRSPIELplatz" editorial team produces radio plays and audio pieces — from satirical triage dramas to historical adaptations. "radio bloq" is a monthly two-hour talk format inviting people from the region to discuss their causes and projects, produced with bloq, a non-profit local journalism initiative. The weekly series "so nah" delivers half an hour of news from the Rhine-Neckar region, and "Parallele Frequenzen" explores the music, countercultures, and independent scenes of a different country in each series.

The feminist editorial team runs the "These Girls" series — readings and discussions on feminist music history, with book presentations and live music — while the music editorial team publishes regular concert and film recommendations spanning venues from the Alte Feuerwache to the Enjoy Jazz festival. Training is continuous: the station offers free workshops on jingle production, media law, and internet rights, keeping volunteers up to date with the legal realities of broadcasting and online publishing.

A notable strand of the station's civic work is remembrance culture: the "Radio AG" project "Erinnerung für die Zukunft" (Remembrance for the Future), developed with the Mannheim-Sandhofen concentration camp memorial, brings together a core group of four to five members meeting every two weeks at the station's premises. The group visited the memorial — located in what is now the Gustav-Wiederkehr-Schule — interviewed visitors on site, and produced broadcasts capturing impressions of the memorial, establishing a new form of remembrance work aimed at diverse audiences across society. The project exemplifies how bermuda.funk functions as a civic infrastructure, connecting cultural institutions with community media.

Coverage and Audience

bermuda.funk broadcasts terrestrially on FM 105.4 MHz in Heidelberg and 89.6 MHz in Mannheim (shared with radioaktiv), on cable at 107.45 MHz across the region — including Eberbach, Hockenheim, Ladenburg, Mosbach, Neckargemünd, Schwetzingen, Sinsheim, Walldorf, Weinheim, and Wiesloch — and worldwide via internet livestream. The reception area is the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, one of Germany's major urban agglomerations spanning parts of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Hesse.

The station publishes no audience ratings, as is standard for German free radio. Its audience is the region's alternative cultural public: students of the universities of Mannheim and Heidelberg, activists, musicians, and the migrant communities served by its multilingual programming.

Ownership and Funding

bermuda.funk is operated by the registered association Freies Radio Rhein-Neckar e. V. At the state level it is organised with the other free radios of Baden-Württemberg in the Assoziation Freier Gesellschaftsfunk (AFF); nationally it is a member of the Bundesverband Freier Radios (BFR). Like other German free radios, the station is financed without commercial advertising — through membership contributions, donations, project grants, and support from the state media authority — preserving its editorial independence.

Digital Presence

bermuda.funk's online home is bermudafunk.org, carrying the livestream, the programme schedule, and podcast archives of its shows. The website documents the station's history from the 1998 initiative through the festival.radio experiment to the present, and provides information for prospective volunteers. The station's productions also circulate through the freie-radios.net exchange platform. From an eleven-day festival experiment in 1999 to a permanent multilingual voice of the Rhine-Neckar region, bermuda.funk has become one of southwestern Germany's most established free radios.
