About bigFM Berlin

bigFM Berlin

bigFM Berlin is the Berlin-Brandenburg version of the bigFM network — Germany's largest private radio brand for young adults — broadcasting since September 2018 exclusively via DAB+ on channel 12D in the capital region. Where the parent station grew up on FM in the southwest, bigFM Berlin was born digital: a youth programme (Jugendprogramm) for Berlin and Brandenburg carried in the Media Broadcast DAB+ multiplex alongside stations such as 104.6 RTL, Energy Berlin, Kiss FM and Star FM. It brings the network's signature rhythmic-contemporary mix of pop, dance, hip-hop and rap — plus the legendary late-night talk formats Nightlounge and Night Talk — to one of Europe's most competitive youth-radio markets, where the battle for young ears is fought across FM, DAB+ and streaming simultaneously.

Overview

bigFM Berlin is a DAB+-only station: it has no FM frequency in the capital, transmitting at 72 kbps in the Berlin/BRBG K12D block from sites including the Berliner Fernsehturm, Schäferberg, Booßen, Calau and Cottbus. Its multiplex neighbours illustrate the density of the capital's digital radio market: 104.6 RTL, 105.5 Spreeradio, BB Radio, Energy Berlin, Kiss FM, Star FM, Power Radio and Radio Potsdam share the same block, alongside special-interest stations from jazz to Schlager. The programme follows the bigFM network format — high-energy rhythmic contemporary music for young adults, the flagship morning show, and the open-phone late-night talk that defines the brand — with regionalization for the Berlin-Brandenburg audience. It competes directly with the capital's established youth stations: Energy Berlin, Kiss FM and Jam FM on the commercial side, and the public Fritz from rbb, in a city where young listeners are fought over by more music stations than anywhere else in Germany.

The station's arrival in 2018 was part of bigFM's deliberate digital-first expansion strategy: after building its FM empire in Baden-Württemberg, Rheinland-Pfalz and the Saarland, the brand used DAB+ capacity to enter Germany's largest media market without waiting for scarce FM licences. Berlin was a statement of intent — the capital's youth audience is the most trend-setting in the country, and a presence there gave the southwestern brand national credibility. The Berlin version was the first of several regional DAB+ editions — Hamburg followed in April 2022, then Niedersachsen, Bremen and Nordrhein-Westfalen in 2023 — making the capital the beachhead of bigFM's transformation from a southwestern FM station into a national youth brand. In August 2025 the network took another analogue step, taking over the FM frequencies of NRW1 in North Rhine-Westphalia, but Berlin remains a digital-only outpost: a station that exists on DAB+ and the internet, purpose-built for listeners who never owned an FM radio.

History

The bigFM story began on 1 April 2000 in Baden-Württemberg, launched as a new youth radio for the German southwest at a time when the state media authorities were licensing youth-oriented programmes to diversify the radio landscape. The station's mix of rhythmic music and provocative late-night talk made it the defining commercial youth station of the southwest, expanding first to Rheinland-Pfalz and later across the region's FM dial.

The Berlin chapter opened in September 2018, when the dedicated programme bigFM Berlin launched on DAB+ channel 12D for Berlin and Brandenburg. The move reflected a structural shift in German radio: DAB+ multiplex capacity, allocated by the media authorities (in Berlin-Brandenburg, the mabb), offered a path into markets where FM frequencies were long exhausted — the capital's FM dial had been fully occupied for decades, with new entrants effectively locked out of analogue terrestrial broadcasting. bigFM's early DAB+ experiments — including the bigFM Worldbeats offshoot, replaced by the regular programme in 2016 — had prepared the ground, proving that the brand could travel beyond its FM heartland. The Berlin launch also coincided with a period of accelerating DAB+ receiver adoption in German households and cars, as the digital standard moved from niche to mainstream. In 2022 the network's administrative headquarters moved from Stuttgart to Mannheim; the Berlin programme continued as the capital's edition of the growing network, later joined by the Hamburg version on 12C in April 2022 and further regional editions in 2023.

Programming

bigFM Berlin carries the network's rhythmic-contemporary format: current hits and recent chart titles from pop, dance, hip-hop and rap, presented with the brand's bold, youthful tone. The morning show anchors the daypart — the network markets it as Germany's biggest morning show, a fast ensemble programme built on games, listener interaction and provocative comedy. Daytime hours rotate current hits with recurrents from the rhythmic genres, while short youth-oriented news and service elements, weather and traffic for the capital region, punctuate the music flow. The signature late-night formats — the Nightlounge, weeknights from midnight to 2 a.m., and the Sunday Night Talk from 10:45 p.m. to midnight — bring the network's open-phone talk culture to Berlin listeners: unscripted conversations about relationships, identity, family and everyday crises that have made bigFM famous and controversial in equal measure.

The station also inherits the network's event and promotion identity: bigFM presents and organizes concerts, parties and festival partnerships, including the media partnership for Rock am Ring, for which it has operated a special festival radio service — the bigFM Ring Radio on FM 87.7 MHz around the festival site. Since 2011 the brand has awarded its annual Initiative for Integration Award in Baden-Württemberg and Rheinland-Pfalz, honouring non-profit projects by associations, schools and initiative groups that promote cultural diversity, openness and tolerance — a civic engagement strand that belongs to the brand's public identity and reflects its young, multicultural audience.

Organization and Ownership

bigFM Berlin is a regional edition of the bigFM network, whose administrative headquarters moved to Mannheim in 2022. The DAB+ capacity in Berlin and Brandenburg is allocated under the supervision of the Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg (mabb), and the 12D multiplex is operated by Media Broadcast. The Berlin edition's position in the network mirrors the Hamburg edition launched in 2022 and the later Niedersachsen, Bremen and Nordrhein-Westfalen editions: a regionalized version of the core bigFM programme, carrying the network's music format, morning show and night-talk brands with local service elements for its coverage area. As with the other regional bigFM editions, the programme is produced within the network's production structure while the licence and capacity arrangements follow the regional regulatory framework. Detailed current ownership structures of the bigFM licence companies are not publicly confirmed in the sources consulted.

Digital Presence

As a digital-native station, bigFM Berlin lives primarily online and on DAB+. The bigfm.de portal carries the live stream with apps for iOS and Android, smart-speaker integration and on-demand content, while the station shares the network's strong social-media presence on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Facebook — short-form video, presenter content and music news aimed at an audience that discovers radio through phones rather than receivers. The network's digital strategy treats the stream and the social feeds as equal in importance to the terrestrial signal: for a DAB+-only station in a city of cord-cutters, the app and the feed are the front door. The brand's web-radio family, including genre channels for hip-hop, dance, rock and chart music plus worldbeat channels with Turkish, Balkan and Russian music, and the AI-generated bigGPT stream launched in 2023, extends the offering beyond the DAB+ programme. For Berlin's young listeners, bigFM is as much a digital brand as a broadcast station — and deliberately so.
