About bigFM

bigFM

bigFM is Germany's leading commercial youth radio network, broadcasting a rhythmic contemporary hit radio format of pop, dance, hip-hop and rap across Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland on FM, with DAB+ feeds extending to Berlin, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Bremen and North Rhine-Westphalia. Launched on 1 April 2000, the network reaches around 476,000 listeners per hour and some 2.5 million per week, making it the strongest-reach radio brand for young adults in the country. Late-night talk shows, a family of webstreams and the AI-generated bigGPT channel round out a youth-media ecosystem far beyond traditional broadcasting.

Overview

bigFM is a network of three regional stations — bigFM Baden-Württemberg ("Der Neue Beat"), bigFM Rhineland-Palatinate ("Hot Music Radio") and bigFM Saarland — united by a rhythmic CHR format specialising in pop, rock, dance, hip-hop and rap. The programme is aimed at young adults and combines tight music rotations with entertainment-driven moderation. A distinctive element is the late-night talk programming: "Nightlounge" airs weeknights from midnight to 2 a.m. and "Night Talk" on Sundays from 10:45 p.m. to midnight, focusing on young people's issues and stories in open-phone format. The network is privately owned and advertising-financed, with programme production centralised through bigFM Programmproduktionsgesellschaft mbH in Mannheim.

History

bigFM launched on 1 April 2000 as a new youth radio for southwestern Germany, in a phase when state media authorities were deliberately licensing youth-oriented programmes to diversify the radio landscape. Its origins are tied to a shareholder dispute at sunshine live: when that station refused a reformatting toward more black music and less dance, the dissenting shareholders founded bigFM as a separate station, initially using satellite capacity freed by the split. The broadcast area was subsequently extended from Baden-Württemberg to Rhineland-Palatinate, where bigFM took over the frequencies of the former schlager station RPR Zwei in August 2003 (in cooperation with RPR1); in Saarland it has broadcast since 5 September 2005 on the frequencies previously used by Jam FM Saarland.

Digital expansion accelerated from 2018: bigFM Berlin launched on DAB+ (channel 12D) for Berlin and Brandenburg in September 2018, followed by a Hamburg version on channel 12C in April 2022; the administrative headquarters moved from Stuttgart to Mannheim in 2022. Since mid-July 2023 bigFM has been on DAB+ in Lower Saxony and Bremen, and since September 2023 in North Rhine-Westphalia. On 8 August 2025 bigFM took over the FM frequencies of NRW1 in North Rhine-Westphalia, replacing that programme on its FM slots, with programme production handled by Audiotainment Südwest GmbH & Co. KG. Parallel to terrestrial growth, bigFM built thematic webstreams from the mid-2010s; in 2023 it launched bigGPT, an AI-based webstream whose content is fully synthetically generated — synthetic voices, AI-generated content and a bigGPT Top 40 of the most-streamed songs on the web.

Programming

The core programme is rhythmic CHR: current pop, dance, hip-hop and rap in tight rotation, presented by a young moderation team with a focus on lifestyle, music news and listener interaction. The late-night talk shows give the network a distinctive public-service-like dimension: "Nightlounge" and "Night Talk" address relationships, everyday problems and youth culture in long-form phone-in conversations. The webstream family extends the brand by genre and mood, while bigGPT represents the network's experimental edge — a fully AI-generated audio experience. Studios in Koblenz, Cologne, Ludwigshafen, Mainz, Saarbrücken, Stuttgart and Trier feed regional content into the network programme.

Coverage & Audience

bigFM broadcasts on FM across Baden-Württemberg (including Stuttgart 89.5 MHz), Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, and on DAB+ in those states plus Berlin-Brandenburg, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Bremen and North Rhine-Westphalia — where it also holds FM frequencies taken over from NRW1 in 2025. Cable, satellite and the worldwide webstream complete the distribution. The ma 2026 Audio I survey credits bigFM with around 476,000 listeners per hour; the network reports 2.5 million weekly listeners, with 11 million people aware of the brand — figures that make it Germany's strongest youth radio by reach.

Ownership

The network's three regional stations are legally independent organisers with a complex shareholder structure: bigFM in Baden-Württemberg GmbH & Co. KG, the Rheinland-Pfälzische Rundfunk GmbH & Co. KG and Skyline Medien Saarland GmbH. Programme production is centralised in the Mannheim-based bigFM Programmproduktionsgesellschaft mbH. The 2025 NRW expansion is produced by Audiotainment Südwest GmbH & Co. KG — the joint venture behind RPR1, bigFM and Radio Regenbogen — while the licence remains with the regional licensee. The structure reflects the federal organisation of German commercial radio, with regional licensees cooperating on a shared national youth brand.

Digital Presence

bigFM's digital ecosystem is among the most developed in German radio. The bigfm.de website and apps carry the live programme alongside the thematic webstreams, while bigGPT — the AI-generated stream launched in 2023 with synthetic voices and AI content — positions the network at the forefront of broadcast innovation. Social media channels serve the young target group with music news, artist content and interactive formats, and the network's late-night talk brands extend into podcast-style on-demand listening. From a 2000 FM launch born of a shareholder dispute to a multi-state DAB+ network with AI-generated channels, bigFM's digital evolution tracks the transformation of youth media itself.

The Southwest's Youth Network

bigFM is the youth-radio network of western and south-western Germany — a network of three legally independent, supra-regional private stations: bigFM Baden-Württemberg, bigFM Rheinland-Pfalz and bigFM Saarland, broadcasting a CHR (contemporary hit radio) format. The station launched on 1 April 2000 as the new youth radio for south-western Germany, later extended to Rhineland-Palatinate, in a phase when the state media authorities deliberately pushed youth-oriented programmes to diversify the radio landscape. According to ma 2026 Audio I, bigFM reaches about 476,000 listeners per hour. The bigFM Programmproduktionsgesellschaft mbH in Mannheim produces programme parts for the regional bigFM programmes on behalf of the three organisers.

Three States, One Beat

The network's legal structure mirrors Germany's federal media order: the licence holders are bigFM Baden-Württemberg GmbH & Co. KG (Mannheim — "Der Neue Beat"), the Rheinland-Pfälzische Rundfunk GmbH & Co. KG (Ludwigshafen am Rhein — "Hot Music Radio") and Skyline Medien Saarland GmbH (Saarbrücken). In Rhineland-Palatinate bigFM cooperates with RPR1 and took over the frequencies of the former schlager station RPR Zwei in August 2003; in Saarland bigFM has broadcast since 5 September 2005 on the frequencies previously used by JAM FM Saarland. Studios are in Koblenz, Cologne, Ludwigshafen am Rhein, Mainz, Saarbrücken, Stuttgart and Trier; the administrative headquarters moved from Stuttgart to Mannheim in 2022. The format targets 18- to 39-year-olds with new and current music.

Digital Expansion

From September 2018 bigFM expanded its digital presence: the programme bigFM Berlin airs via DAB+ on channel 12D for Berlin and Brandenburg; in April 2022 a further regional version followed via DAB+ for Hamburg on channel 12C. Since mid-July 2023 bigFM has been available via DAB+ in Lower Saxony and Bremen, and since September 2023 also in North Rhine-Westphalia. On 8 August 2025 bigFM took over the FM frequencies of NRW1 in North Rhine-Westphalia, replacing that programme — production for bigFM NRW comes from Audiotainment Südwest GmbH & Co. KG, while the licence remains with the regional licensee. Alongside terrestrial distribution, bigFM created several thematic web radio streams from the mid-2010s; in 2023 the station launched bigGPT, an AI-based webstream whose content is fully synthetically generated. From a 2000 youth-radio startup to a multi-state, AI-experimenting network — bigFM is the commercial youth brand of the German south-west.
