blogTO
blogTO is a Toronto-based digital media brand covering local news, culture, restaurants, and things to do in the city. Founded in 2004 by Tim Shore as Freshdaily Inc.'s flagship property, it has grown from a scrappy blog into one of Canada's leading digital media brands — a popular source for Toronto news and city life that, in 2021, generated more than 350 million page views and reached over 6 million users a month. Acquired by ZoomerMedia in January 2022, blogTO combines its website with one of the most-followed Canadian media presences on social media, including more than 360,000 TikTok followers and over 2.5 million followers across other key platforms.
Overview
blogTO — the name stands for "blog Toronto" — is Toronto's source for local news and culture: restaurant reviews and openings, event listings, neighbourhood guides, city politics, transit news, and the endless stream of "what's new" and "what's happening" content that defines life in Canada's largest city. Its tagline-era slogan, "Cuz we don't live in Tokyo or LA," captured the founding ethos: Toronto deserves its own obsessive chroniclers, covering the city with the intensity that global media reserve for global capitals. The site's voice is millennial-friendly, service-oriented, and relentlessly useful — less interested in breaking news than in answering the question every Torontonian asks daily: what's going on in my city?
History
blogTO was founded in 2004 by Tim Shore, in the early days of the blog era — before Instagram, before smartphones, when an "add to MyYahoo" button was an essential plugin. The early site looked very different from today's polished operation: a heavy dose of concert coverage, a feature called "The Morning Brew" rounding up the day's news, and the defiantly local slogan "Cuz we don't live in Tokyo or LA." There was no office — just random team "socials" in a basement space near Queen and Ossington, where the crew ate pizza, drank beer, and pored over website analytics to see what readers cared about.
The site grew by being useful. The team launched a series of neighbourhood maps, threw parties at local art galleries, and once built an app to help people find late-night eats. They created what became one of the most comprehensive "Best Of" sections and patio guides of any city publication, built directories for events, restaurants, coffee shops, and other local places, and expanded into video in a big way. Each addition made blogTO more indispensable to Torontonians navigating their city — and each brought more readers.
By 2021, the numbers were staggering for a local publication in a country of 38 million people: more than 350 million page views in a single year, reaching over 6 million users a month. In January 2022, ZoomerMedia — the company founded in 2008 by veteran media executive Moses Znaimer, the visionary behind Citytv, CP24, and MuchMusic — announced the acquisition of blogTO's parent Freshdaily Inc. For Shore, who had built the site over 17 years, the sale was validation: as he put it, combining blogTO's capabilities with ZoomerMedia's resources would let the team grow, evolve, and continue covering the best city in the world. Znaimer framed the deal as a generational bridge: "I'm a known believer in the local. Zoomer Radio and Classical FM already bring local news and life to the older demo. blogTO does that for the younger cohorts. Together they make a complete offering, for the public as well as the advertiser." At the time, ZoomerMedia's digital properties delivered just over 50 million page views a year; blogTO would add more than 350 million — and, Znaimer said, kickstart a suite of new, mobile-friendly digital offerings.
Content
blogTO's content is organized around the practical and pleasurable dimensions of Toronto life: local news (city hall, transit, development, neighbourhood issues), culture (music, arts, film, festivals), food and drink (restaurant openings and closings, reviews, chef profiles, the city's endlessly evolving dining scene), and things to do (event listings, weekend guides, seasonal roundups). The "Best Of" sections and patio guides are signature products — exhaustively researched directories that readers return to year after year.
The site's headlines, described as millennial-friendly and occasionally eye-roll inducing, are engineered for the social media age: specific, serviceable, and shareable. A blogTO story doesn't just report that a restaurant opened; it tells you why you should care, what to order, and how to get there. This service orientation — journalism as utility — is the site's defining characteristic and the source of its loyalty.
Coverage and Audience
blogTO covers Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area — a metropolitan region of more than 6 million people, Canada's economic engine and its most diverse urban centre. Its audience is the city's young and young-at-heart: millennials and Gen Z Torontonians who experience the city through their phones, discover restaurants on TikTok, and plan weekends around the site's listings. The 6 million monthly users the site reached in 2021 represented a remarkable share of the GTA's population — evidence that blogTO had become essential infrastructure for navigating the city.
The site's social media following extends its reach far beyond the website: with over 360,000 TikTok followers and more than 2.5 million followers across Instagram, X, Facebook, YouTube, and other platforms, blogTO is one of Canada's most-followed media brands on social. For many younger readers, blogTO is encountered first as a social account and only second as a website.
Business Model and Social Strategy
blogTO's business has evolved with the media industry. While the website's 350 million annual page views remain impressive, the site's founder has acknowledged that the website is no longer the company's main source of revenue. Like all media companies, blogTO has had to evolve — and its evolution has been toward social media. The majority of revenue now comes from social platforms, where the company offers advertisers affordable sponsored content options: sponsored Instagram stories, videos, contests, photo galleries, and custom programs spanning multiple channels. For bigger budgets, the team creates custom videos through its Firework video player integration, guaranteeing views and reach across Instagram, Facebook, X, and the website simultaneously.
This social-first revenue strategy reflects a clear-eyed assessment of where the audience is: on the platforms, not just on the site. blogTO's branded content, sponsored content, custom videos, and live shopping experiences go well beyond traditional advertising, offering brands the site's voice and its audience's trust. For local advertisers — the restaurants, venues, and retailers that make up Toronto's commercial fabric — blogTO offers something increasingly rare: the attention of the city's young consumers, delivered in a voice they trust, at price points smaller businesses can afford.
Ownership
blogTO was founded by Tim Shore in 2004 through Freshdaily Inc., which he led as publisher for 17 years. In January 2022, ZoomerMedia Limited — the Toronto-based media company founded in 2008 by Moses Znaimer, with television properties including VisionTV, ONETV, JoyTV, and FAITHTV, radio stations including The New Classical FM and Zoomer Radio, and ZOOMER Magazine — acquired Freshdaily. The acquisition placed blogTO within a company whose roots are in media for the 45-plus "Zoomer" demographic but which was pushing its analog radio, TV, and magazine products and audiences into the digital domain. Both ZoomerMedia and CARP are based in the ZoomerPlex, the 2.6-acre production and live-event complex in Toronto's Liberty Village.
Digital Presence
blogTO lives at blogto.com, but its digital presence extends far beyond the website. The site is the archive and the hub — the searchable repository of two decades of Toronto coverage — while social media is the distribution engine: TikTok, Instagram, X, Facebook, YouTube, and emerging platforms carry the brand to millions of followers daily. The integration of website, social, video, and email makes blogTO a fully multi-platform media brand — the model for how local digital media survives in the platform age.
