About Boxclever

Boxclever

Boxclever, trading as Boxclever Consulting, is a full-service insight consultancy based in Leeds, England. Founded in 2010 by three former directors of the research agency Nunwood, it built its reputation on a distinctive staffing model: it describes itself as the United Kingdom's largest senior-only insight consultancy, meaning clients work directly with experienced researchers rather than junior teams. Its services span customer experience, proposition development and pricing, segmentation, brand strategy and marketing effectiveness, delivered through five self-described centres of excellence for clients that include some of Britain's best-known consumer brands.

Founded by three Nunwood directors

Boxclever was established in November 2010 by Kathryn Boxall, Sam Gardner and Claire Boorman, all three of whom had been strategy directors and board directors at Nunwood, the Leeds-based research firm. Each founder brought a defined specialism: Gardner was responsible for analytics, Boxall for research and insight, and Boorman for qualitative research and activation. Launching during a tough economic period, the founders argued that a start-up's low overheads made it more agile and better able to adapt to the cost constraints research buyers faced, while larger established agencies were distracted by internal restructuring. The new consultancy planned to work with a broad spectrum of clients on high-end consultancy projects, drawing research support from a network of fieldwork partners.

The senior-only model

The promise that has defined Boxclever since its early years is its hands-on, senior-only model. The agency says this approach resonates strongly with client-side insight teams and their stakeholders, because the people who pitch and design a study are the people who carry it out and present it. New recruits have consistently been hired at experienced levels: when the firm added three director-level appointments in 2016, one qualitative director arrived from Relish, a quantitative director brought twelve years at Ipsos, where he had headed the RAJAR radio audience research programme, and an analytics director joined from KPMG Nunwood, into which Nunwood had been absorbed. Staff joining in the 2020s have similarly come with a decade or more of experience, and recruits themselves cite the senior-only team as a reason for joining.

Five centres of excellence

Boxclever organises its expertise into five centres of excellence. These are market scoping and sizing; segmentation and targeting; journeys and decisions; proposition development and pricing; and branding and communications. Co-founder and head of analytics Sam Gardner has described segmentation and targeting studies as a key driver of growth for the analytics portfolio. The consultancy has also historically described its offer in terms of customer experience research, proposition development and pricing, segmentation, brand strategy and marketing effectiveness, and its researchers work across qualitative and quantitative methods, including techniques such as MaxDiff, conjoint analysis and driver analysis.

Marketing effectiveness as a specialism

In November 2015 Boxclever launched a dedicated Marketing Effectiveness business, led by Colin Bunn, who joined from Ninah Consulting, the analytics and data sciences division of Zenith Optimedia, after earlier analytics roles at Nielsen and Nunwood. The unit's expertise included econometrics-based marketing mix modelling, digital conversion modelling, new media testing and long-term brand equity modelling. The launch was presented as a response to industry demand for more customised approaches to measuring marketing return on investment, and it extended the young agency's offer from generating insight to proving the commercial value of marketing spend.

Growth through recommendation

Boxclever says it has built its business through client recommendation, and trade coverage has repeatedly recorded double-digit growth years. In 2016 the firm credited another year of double-digit growth to client recommendation and strengthening existing relationships. A decade later the pattern continued: reporting appointments in the mid-2020s, director Kathryn Boxall again pointed to another year of double-digit growth under the company's belt. The analytics portfolio in particular is described as having grown steadily over the firm's first fifteen years, prompting continued senior hiring, including a senior manager for the analytics team in June 2025 whose background spanned Trinity McQueen, KPMG Nunwood, YouGov and Ipsos, and who was expected to focus partly on artificial intelligence in research.

Clients and case work

The client logos displayed by Boxclever include Carlsberg Group, the University of East Anglia, Barclays, MoneySuperMarket, Heineken, Prudential, Arla, Skipton Building Society, Swinton Group, Genius gluten-free foods, Standard Life and IHG Hotels and Resorts. In a published testimonial, the group strategy director of The Very Group described working closely with Boxclever to develop a commercial approach to defining and segmenting the retailer's addressable market, calling the analysis smart and robust and the project one of the most successful delivered to the executive team. The spread of clients reflects the agency's stated experience across sectors, geographies and methodologies, with particular strength in financial services, retail, food and drink and hospitality.

People and professional involvement

Boxclever's directors remain visibly active in the wider research profession. Qualitative staff have served on the board of the AQR, the United Kingdom's qualitative research association: research director Lucy Hobbs held a board role, and associate director Natasha Ward, who joined the qualitative team in the mid-2020s after more than five years at Acacia Avenue and earlier roles at YouGov and Healthwatch Surrey, completed a three-year term on the AQR board, helping to chair and organise the AQR Conference. Financial services research has been identified as a particular area of specialism within the qualitative team. The firm has also invested in its own brand and marketing function, promoting Tilly Lewis, who joined as marketing manager in 2020, to senior brand and marketing manager in 2024.

Continued senior hiring

Recruitment announcements through the 2020s show the model being maintained as the firm grows. In August 2024 Boxclever appointed Harry Westerman as quantitative research director; he had spent more than nine years at Kokoro Global, most recently as research director, and began his career at Principles Research and Strategy, bringing experience in customer closeness, category understanding, proposition development and testing, brand and communications and insight activation. Other appointments included Lisa Lawrence as operations manager, joining after more than thirteen years as a field co-ordinator at Leeds-based Gusto Research, and Lucy Hampson as quantitative director, who brought a decade of experience of complex, global, multi-method projects, particularly in beauty and healthcare, after roles at InSites Consulting, later Human8, Manchester agency Join the Dots and Beyond Blue. Director Kathryn Boxall welcomed such arrivals for their experience and leadership, linking the hiring directly to the company's continued growth.

Voice in the industry: podcasting and content

Boxclever has used content and podcasting to build relationships and explain the research industry to a wider audience. Working with the Leeds content agency This Is Distorted, it developed a podcast intended, in its marketing manager's words, to show that market research is not all clipboards and graphs, and to explore what makes the people behind the insights who they are. The move reflected the agency's collaborative, community-focused style and its aim of extracting the most value from every piece of insight it produces, for clients and for its own brand alike.

Leeds base and contact

Boxclever is headquartered in Leeds, one of the main centres of the British research industry outside London, at Victoria Wharf, Sovereign Street, in the city centre. From that base it serves national and international clients while retaining the identity of a Northern consultancy founded by three researchers who had worked together in the city. Its contact point is its website and Leeds office, and it maintains an active presence on professional and social channels.

Position and significance

Fifteen years after its founding, Boxclever stands as an example of the boutique, senior-led consultancy model in British market research: independent, full-service, and organised around depth of experience rather than scale of headcount. By combining qualitative research, quantitative research and advanced analytics under five centres of excellence, and by growing largely on recommendation, it has sustained a place alongside much larger research groups in the portfolios of major British brands.
