About Bus News
Bus News
Overview
Bus News, at busnews.com.au, is the website of Australasian Bus & Coach (ABC) magazine, the business-to-business publication of the Australian and New Zealand bus and coach industry, published by Prime Creative Media from Melbourne. The site carries the magazine's daily news service — operator news, government funding and policy, manufacturer and supplier developments, new vehicle launches and reviews — alongside the monthly print magazine and a large classified marketplace of used buses and coaches for sale. Together, the print title and its website form the industry's longest-running specialist media brand: the magazine marked 30 years of publication in 2018, and its subscribe page now describes it as a trusted industry publication for more than 35 years.
The publication's remit is the whole passenger road transport sector: route and school bus operators, charter and tour coach companies, the government agencies that contract them, and the manufacturers, body builders and component suppliers that equip them. Its news is written for the people who own, manage and supply those fleets.
History
The magazine's origins date to the late 1980s on the title's own anniversary record — ABC celebrated 30 years of publishing in 2018, a milestone its staff marked, among other things, by hunting down a copy of Issue No. 1, eventually located in 2021 when sister titles cleared out a Brisbane office ahead of a relocation. For much of its recent history the title sat within the Trader classifieds publishing stable, passing through the ACP, Bauer Trader Media and Are Media ownership eras; in a May 2021 report on its circulation audit, ABC's publisher was still quoted as an Are Media group publisher.
The website had been growing before the sale — the new owner spoke in 2021 of building on four years of online growth at busnews.com.au — and the Trader years had also carried the title through successive corporate restructures of its parent, from ACP's classifieds business through Bauer Media's Trader division to Are Media, the group formed when Bauer's Australian business was sold in 2020.
That changed in 2021, when Prime Creative Media bought the Trader Media Group. Announcing the relaunch of the title under its new owner in August 2021, Prime Creative Media said ABC would gain a new-look weekly email newsletter and a dedicated business development manager, drawing on the publisher's print and digital resources. Prime Creative Media's chief executive John Murphy said the company had "been lucky enough to purchase Australasian Bus & Coach magazine recently with our purchase of the Trader Media Group", and that it would invest in growing the print and digital offering because keeping Australian-owned publications alive maintained a diverse media landscape. Fabian Cotter was the magazine's editor at the time of the relaunch.
The title has since continued as part of Prime Creative Media's transport portfolio, published from the publisher's Docklands headquarters in Melbourne, with the print magazine (ISSN 1324-8634) appearing monthly and the website carrying the faster-moving news between issues.
Content and Coverage
Bus News publishes industry news daily. Its coverage spans operator and contract news — tenders, route contracts and government programs, such as the Western Australian Government's $1 million commitment in October 2026 to attract a long-term charter coach operator to base itself in Albany — manufacturer and supplier news covering the local body-building sector and the global chassis and bus brands active in the region, and detailed vehicle journalism, including video reviews of new models from manufacturers such as Yutong.
A centrepiece of the calendar is the Australasia Bus & Coach Expo, and the site's coverage through September and October 2026 was dominated by reviews and recaps of stands and product unveilings from the 2026 Expo at the Sydney Showground, covering exhibitors from seating and component suppliers to international manufacturers returning to the Australian market. The print magazine complements the news with features on operator businesses, monthly deliveries data recording new buses entering service, product showcases and its Back Seat heritage column on classic vehicles.
The website also operates one of the industry's principal marketplaces, with classified listings for used buses and coaches — route buses, school buses, charter and tour coaches, and mini coaches — searchable by dealers and private sellers across Australia, filterable by class, application, fuel type and price, and it streams the Australian Truck Radio service for its road-transport audience. The site's video review program road-tests new models for operators — recent subjects have included Yutong's C10, E7S and D7E buses as electric and diesel models roll into Australian fleets — while its monthly deliveries reporting tracks which operators are taking which vehicles, a data staple the industry uses to watch fleet renewal and manufacturer market share. In New Zealand, ABC is the official media partner of the New Zealand Bus and Coach Association (BCA): after the association wound up its own Circular magazine, with a final edition in April 2025, ABC introduced a dedicated New Zealand section carrying BCA updates and New Zealand industry news, and BCA members receive free access to the online edition.
Audience and Reach
ABC is distributed by paid subscription, and its print masthead describes distribution across Australia, New Zealand and beyond to the owners and managers of route buses, government bus operations, school buses, extended and day tour operations, express coaches, country and charter operations, bus and coach manufacturers, equipment suppliers, tourism attractions and railways management. The magazine's audited history is a point of pride for the title: reporting figures from the Circulation Audit Bureau in 2021, ABC said it had achieved an audited circulation of 3,312 copies per issue in the six months to 31 March 2021, and described itself as the only Australian bus and coach magazine submitting to the official audit. In the same report, the magazine said BusNews.com.au had attracted a then-record 38,866 visitors in May 2021. Those figures are the publisher's own reporting of the period and are dated; no current independently audited circulation figure for the title is published, and none is claimed here.
Digital Presence
Busnews.com.au is the title's daily platform, combining the news service, the current print issue's content, subscription and advertising information, and the used-vehicle marketplace. The weekly email newsletter relaunched under Prime Creative Media remains part of its digital mix, and the title maintains an active LinkedIn company page under the Australasian Bus & Coach name, on which it posts story links and industry updates, alongside its other social channels. Its digital operation sits inside Prime Creative Media's wider transport media platform, alongside the publisher's trucking titles and classifieds businesses, with shared marketplace technology across the group.
Ownership and Organisation
Bus News and Australasian Bus & Coach are owned and published by Prime Creative Media, the Melbourne-based business-to-business publisher, which acquired the title in 2021 as part of its purchase of the Trader Media Group from Are Media. Prime Creative Media describes itself as Australia's largest B2B publisher — its own characterisation — with mastheads across transport and logistics, manufacturing, infrastructure, agriculture, mining and resources, education and other sectors. The magazine's editor is Sean Mortell, whose byline leads its current news and Expo coverage and who is named as editor in the title's industry partnership announcements; contributors include staff writers such as Chris Edwards, and its commercial operation includes a dedicated business development manager for the title, a role held by Adrian Kos in its partnership announcements.
