BW Hotelier
BW Hotelier is a hospitality trade magazine published from New Delhi by the BW Businessworld group. Launched in January 2015, it was created as the Indian edition of Hotelier International, in partnership between Businessworld, part of GBN Media Pvt Ltd, and the London-based Hotelier International Media Limited. From the outset it positioned itself not as a consumer travel title but as a business-to-business publication for the people who own, build, manage and supply hotels in India. Its readers are hotel owners, general managers, chefs, food and beverage directors, designers, suppliers and investors, and its work spans print, a busy news website, social media, web shows and large industry events. In a sector where trade information was once scattered across general business coverage, BW Hotelier gave Indian hospitality a dedicated editorial home.
Origins and the 2015 Launch
The magazine arrived after a period of rapid expansion at Businessworld. The parent magazine, founded in 1981 and long published by the ABP Group, was sold on 19 September 2013 to media entrepreneur Anurag Batra, owner of the exchange4media group, and Vikram Jhunjhunwala of Shrine Capital. Under its new ownership, Businessworld pursued what it described as a 360-degree strategy across print, online and events, and hospitality was an early vertical chosen for that expansion. The licensing agreement with Hotelier International was presented as the first step in that plan. At the time, Hotelier International was described as the world's largest business-to-business publication for hoteliers, with editions across 15 countries and a combined circulation of 300,000. The licence deal was initiated through Cue Ball LLC, and the Indian launch was formally unveiled in New Delhi by Dr Mahesh Sharma, then Minister of State for Tourism and Culture, with Dr Lalit K. Panwar, Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, as guest of honour. That choice of launch guests signalled the audience the new title intended to reach: policymakers as well as operators.
The People Behind the Title
Leadership has remained closely tied to the wider BW group. Dr Anurag Batra is Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of the BW Businessworld Group, and Bhuvanesh Khanna has served as Chief Executive Officer for BW Communities, the division under which the hospitality vertical developed. For the launch, Businessworld recruited two senior specialists. Sourish Bhattacharyya, previously Executive Editor of Mail Today, joined as Consulting Editor for BW Hotelier. A journalist with 29 years in the profession at that point, he was widely known for his food and beverage writing, including the Fortune Cookie column in Mail Today, for his hospitality blog, as a co-founder of the Delhi Gourmet Club and as an initiator of the Top Chef Awards, and he had received a Best Food Columnist Award from the Indian Culinary Forum. Bikramjit Ray joined alongside him on the editorial side, working with Businessworld editor Rajeev Dubey. In later years the magazine's listed editorial contact has included editor Saurabh Tankha, reflecting the title's evolution from a launch team into a standing newsroom within the BW offices.
What the Magazine Covers
BW Hotelier's subject matter follows the working life of a hotel. Its coverage includes hotel development and new property openings, appointments and movements among senior hospitality professionals, food and beverage trends, restaurant openings, travel trade developments, technology adoption, human resources and training, and the commercial questions that shape hotel performance. Because it grew out of a business magazine rather than a lifestyle title, its treatment tends to emphasise ownership, investment, operations and leadership rather than guest experience alone. Features on subjects such as clean air as a point of differentiation for luxury hotels in Delhi illustrate the approach: a guest-facing amenity examined as a competitive and operational decision. The website organises this output as rolling hospitality business news, while the print and digital editions gather longer features, interviews and special reports aimed at decision-makers.
Print, Digital and a 360-Degree Model
From its first year, BW Hotelier was deliberately more than a printed magazine. Contemporary accounts of the launch stressed that events would bring businesses together and drive thought leadership for the sector, alongside print and digital publishing. That model has endured. The title describes its own presence across print, online, on-ground and virtual events, social media and web shows. Industry references to the brand note the reach claimed for its website among hospitality decision-makers, and a 2019 account described it as having occupied a leading position in its domain since inception in 2015. For advertisers and commercial partners, that combination matters: a trade advertiser in hospitality supplies, design, technology or food service is buying access not only to a magazine audience but to a community that also gathers in person at BW events.
The Indian Hospitality Summit and Awards
The clearest expression of the community model is the BW Hotelier Indian Hospitality Summit and Awards, widely shortened to IHA. By 2026 the event had reached its tenth edition, held on 24 and 25 September 2026 at the JW Marriott New Delhi Aerocity under the theme of India's Hospitality Decade: From Growth to Greatness. The published structure split the summit into a first day focused on investments and development, covering growth engines, infrastructure and global partnerships, and a second day focused on operations and talent, covering service excellence and experience innovation. An awards gala closed the second day. Organisers described a speaker line-up spanning Union ministers and government officials, global and Indian hospitality chief executives, investors and hotel owners, architects, designers, celebrity chefs, human resources leaders and educationists. The awards themselves were presented through an independent multi-tier jury process, moving from regional shortlisting to national evaluation, with an open online nomination process intended to draw entries from across the country.
Recognising the People Who Run Hotels
The IHA awards illustrate the magazine's editorial values in concrete form. Rather than rewarding only properties or brands, categories have recognised functional leaders inside hotels, including heads of information technology. At IHA 2026, for example, the Head of IT category named regional winners from the north, east, west and south, with national honours shared by executives from ITC Maurya in New Delhi and Novotel Visakhapatnam Varun Beach. That kind of category — technical, unglamorous to a general reader, central to a modern hotel's operation — shows who BW Hotelier is for. Its constituency includes the specialists who manage revenue systems, kitchens, engineering, housekeeping, learning and development and guest technology, and its events are designed to give those professionals the same public recognition usually reserved for owners and celebrity chefs.
Place Within the BW Businessworld Group
BW Hotelier sits inside a much larger business media house. BW Businessworld describes itself as a growing 360-degree business media organisation with a network spanning 23 niche business communities and 10 magazines, with every issue also covered digitally through online stories, video stories and an e-magazine. Hotelier is one of the vertical communities built around a specific industry, applying the parent group's formula of a magazine, a website and convenings of senior practitioners. The registered office listed for BW Hotelier is at Scindia House in Connaught Place, New Delhi, with a corporate address on Janpath, also in Connaught Place, placing the operation in the capital's historic commercial centre, close to government ministries, hotel headquarters and the city's major hospitality properties.
Readership and Industry Role
The magazine's stated ambition, repeated since launch, is to be the most effective medium for reaching decision-makers in Indian hospitality. Its natural readers are senior enough to approve a renovation, sign a management contract, choose a supplier or set a hiring plan. That focus explains the mix of content: policy news matters because regulation shapes hotel economics; development news matters because India's hotel pipeline determines future competition; food and beverage coverage matters because restaurants are major revenue centres for urban hotels; and people coverage matters because leadership movement is closely watched in a relationship-driven industry. For younger professionals, the interviews and summit reporting offer a map of how careers and companies are built in the sector.
Why the Title Matters
Indian hospitality has grown from a business concentrated in metropolitan luxury hotels into a far broader market of branded mid-market properties, resorts, serviced apartments and restaurant groups across tier-two and tier-three cities. A trade press has grown with it. BW Hotelier's contribution has been to import an international trade format through its Hotelier International partnership, localise it under a major Indian business publisher, and then extend it into one of the sector's most visible annual gatherings. Its history also captures a wider shift in Indian media: the move from standalone magazines toward community businesses in which print authority, digital speed and live events reinforce one another.
BW Hotelier Today
More than a decade after its launch, BW Hotelier continues to publish hospitality business news from New Delhi, covering hotels, restaurants, travel trade and the professionals who lead them, while its summit and awards anchor its calendar. The title remains part of the BW Businessworld group led by Anurag Batra, and its official website, bwhotelier.com, serves as the daily face of a brand that began as a licensed print magazine. For readers researching India's hotel industry — its companies, its leaders and its direction — BW Hotelier is both a news source and a record of how the industry has chosen to present and debate itself since 2015.
