About Cailian Press

Cailian Press

Overview

Cailian Press, known in Chinese as Cailianshe, is a Chinese financial news service based in Shanghai that built its reputation on speed. It is a financial newsflash service: a wire of short, fast, verified items about China's stock market and the companies, policies and events that move it, delivered continuously to investors through an app, a desktop client and syndication to other platforms. Its founding slogan, rendered in English as telegraphic newsflash, captures the model exactly — items written like telegrams, concise and practical, published in seconds rather than in the form of long articles hours after an event. Cailian Press grew up with the Chinese bull market of 2014, focused exclusively on China's stock market in its early form, and was described in 2015 as a rising star of Chinese financial new media and as the Chinese service that had demonstrated the potential to be China's Bloomberg. It began as a new media platform affiliated with the Securities Times and developed by Blue Whale Media, the company also known as Lanjinger. At the end of 2017 it was merged with Jiemian News to form Jiemian-Cailian Press under the Shanghai United Media Group, the state-owned Shanghai media group, and the Cailian Press wire and app continued as a principal brand of the combined company.

Origins with Blue Whale Media and Securities Times

Cailian Press was founded in 2015 by media firm Lanjinger.com and China's Securities Times as a newswire service for A-share investors, according to reporting on the later Jiemian merger. Lanjinger is the Chinese name associated with Blue Whale Media, the parent company repeatedly identified in Cailian Press's own early publicity, which described Blue Whale Media as providing a powerful launching pad for the service. The Securities Times connection gave the young service standing in the official financial media system: Securities Times is one of China's designated securities newspapers, and Cailian Press was described in 2015 as a new media platform affiliated with Securities Times. The combination behind Cailian Press was therefore neither a conventional newspaper newsroom nor a pure technology start-up. Blue Whale contributed a network built around financial journalists — its Blue Whale Financial Journalists Work Platform provided daily service support to financial journalists across China — and an understanding of how market news actually moves, while the Securities Times affiliation supplied institutional credibility in a market where investors must distinguish verified information from rumour. Cailian Press's own account of its team said it was composed of researchers, investors and journalists from mainstream media, a mix intended to ensure professionalism and allow quick reaction to news events.

The telegraphic newsflash model

The product Cailian Press sold was a form, not just a brand. As its slogan telegraphic newsflash indicated, every piece of information was concise, professional and practical, in layout as much as in content, to facilitate the decision-making of investors. The reasoning was stated plainly in its early publicity: the investment community competes on speed, and a minute or even a second's delay can make a large difference in earnings, so financial news must strive for speed and accuracy together. The wire therefore prioritised the verified fact — a company announcement, a policy statement, a market move, a regulator's decision — published immediately in a few lines, over the explanatory article that traditional financial media would produce later. Authenticity was presented as the second pillar of the model. In a stock market described as flooded with rumours and fake news, leaving investors struggling to distinguish facts from hearsay, Cailian Press said every piece of news it published had been verified with reliable media or sources before publication. Speed without verification would merely have accelerated rumour; verification without speed would have reproduced the old media it was displacing. The newsflash form that Cailian Press popularised became a standard feature of Chinese financial platforms, imitated across the industry, and Cailian items are routinely cited by other Chinese and international outlets as the source of market-moving first reports.

The app launch in March 2015 and the first million users

Cailian Press launched its app in March 2015, in the middle of the great Chinese stock market rally that carried into the summer of that year. The timing proved decisive. In less than nine months from launch, the app attracted more than one million registered users, including both institutional and retail investors, the two groups that dominate China's stock market. That growth figure, reported in December 2015, is the foundational statistic of the company's history: a specialist newsflash service, without a legacy newspaper circulation behind it, reached a million registered users in its first year by matching a new product form to an intense, time-limited surge of public attention to share prices. Cailian Press also made a deliberate channel decision that distinguished it from competitors. While other players shifted away from personal computers and concentrated on mobile, Cailian Press paid special attention to investors who were more used to browsing information on a desktop when making investment decisions, and developed a personal computer client tailored to their needs. That helped it gain a foothold in the professional and serious retail segment at the moment its competitors were fighting over mobile alone.

Series A funding: RMB 50 million led by CDH in July 2015

Investors backed the growth quickly. In July 2015, only four months after the app's launch, Cailian Press closed a Series A round of funding of RMB 50 million, led by CDH Investments and joined by Stone Capital and Rich-yield Capital. The round was announced in the company's December 2015 publicity and was presented as venture capital choosing Cailian Press for its disruptive innovation in financial information services. CDH Investments was one of China's best-known private equity firms, and its decision to lead a round for a months-old financial news service signalled that the capital market regarded real-time financial news as infrastructure worth owning, not merely as media content. At the same time, Cailian Press set out ambitions beyond the wire itself. It incorporated data and analytics tools into its solution alongside news, and rolled out the Feng System Expert Network, which it said connected investors with a large network of experts across fields, supported by trained analysts, a technology-based search engine and close cooperation with China's leading brokerage firms and listed companies in industry research, due diligence and roadshows. Its stated next moves in 2015 were to build a community for stock investors, run a private equity workshop to train private equity managers and establish a big data forecast centre, with a new financing round already launched. Not all of those plans defined its later identity, but they show the direction of travel: from newsflash wire toward a broader financial information platform.

Parent support: Blue Whale platforms and the media network

Cailian Press's growth was assisted by assets elsewhere in its parent group that a standalone news start-up would have had to build from nothing. Blue Whale Media's Financial Journalists Work Platform provided daily service support to financial journalists across China, strengthening the connection between Cailian Press and major financial media and giving it proximity to the reporters whose work and contacts feed a market news wire. The group's Hunshui We-Media Alliance gave Cailian Press greater influence across we-media and social media and served as a platform for a wide range of media organisations, expanding its influence in the media industry. In practice this meant that Cailian items could travel: a newsflash published on the wire could be amplified through allied self-media accounts and partner outlets, while the journalist platform kept the service close to the community producing financial reporting nationally. Distribution of that kind matters for a wire service because its commercial value depends on becoming the cited source — the outlet other outlets quote — when news breaks. The repeated pattern in later international coverage, in which Cailian is identified as the service that first reported a suspension, a transaction or a regulatory step involving a Chinese listed company, reflects that position having been achieved.

Merger into Jiemian-Cailian Press at the end of 2017

The decisive corporate change in Cailian Press's history came at the end of 2017, when it was combined with Jiemian News. Jiemian-Cailian Press was created at the end of 2017 through a stock-for-stock merger between Jiemian and Cailian Press, with Jiemian News completing the acquisition of the entire Blue Whale Finance and Cailian Press through a stock swap, as reference histories of Jiemian record. Jiemian was an online financial and business media outlet launched by Shanghai United Media Group in 2014. Qiu Xin, president of Shanghai United Media Group, said at the time that the two sought to build China's Bloomberg through the merger, and the merged venture was claimed to be valued at over 5 billion yuan. The logic of the combination was complementary assets. Jiemian brought a state-owned media group's backing, an established digital news brand aimed at business readers and Shanghai's official media resources. Cailian Press brought the real-time wire, the A-share investor audience and the newsflash product that Jiemian lacked. The merger moved Cailian Press from venture-backed start-up ownership into a state-owned media group structure, changing its governance and its strategic horizon while keeping its brand, wire and app in operation as a distinct service within the combined company.

The combined company: scale and services

Within Jiemian-Cailian Press, the Cailian service became part of a larger financial information business whose scale was described at the time of its Series C financing in August 2020. The combined company said it covered hundreds of pieces of financial news on a daily basis, tracking developments in global major capital markets, listed companies and financial institutions, and that it had more than 500 reporters and editors located in cities including Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, New York and London. Its readers and clients included government departments, investment institutions, publicly traded companies and individual investors. It said it leveraged financial big data, machine learning, user labels and intelligent distribution technology to provide news, financial information, big data and transaction services through consumer-facing platforms including Jiemian, Cailian Press and chinastarmarket.cn, and through business-facing data systems and applications. In August 2020 Jiemian-Cailian Press secured over 500 million yuan, about 72 million US dollars, in a Series C round backed by strategic investors including the state-owned financial conglomerate Xu Hui Guo Tou and the China Internet Investment Fund, a fund jointly launched by China's Ministry of Finance and the Cyberspace Administration of China. That investor list confirms the transformation the 2017 merger had effected: the once venture-backed newsflash start-up was now financed as strategic state-backed financial information infrastructure.

Role in China's financial news ecosystem

Cailian Press's lasting importance is the role it came to occupy in the daily flow of Chinese market information. International wire and newspaper coverage of Chinese companies routinely attributes first reports to Cailian: an Associated Press report on the suspension of Evergrande's shares in Hong Kong, for example, identified Cailian as a Chinese online news service affiliated with the state-run Securities Times when citing its reporting on a related transaction, and financial news digests in English continue to cite according to Cailian Press as a standard source credit for overnight and market news. Inside China, the telegraphic newsflash became the default grammar of market apps, and Cailian's wire competes as a professional feed for platforms and institutions as well as a consumer app. Its trajectory summarises a wider shift in Chinese financial media in the 2010s: from the designated securities newspapers that flourished from the late 1990s, through internet portals, to mobile real-time wires owned by media groups and financed as data businesses. Cailian Press is the clearest single example of the newsflash stage of that evolution, which is why it is catalogued here as a news agency in its own right rather than merely as an app.

Assessment

Founded in 2015, funded with RMB 50 million of Series A capital led by CDH Investments within months of its app launch, carried past one million registered users in under nine months, and merged into a venture valued at over 5 billion yuan by the end of 2017, Cailian Press compressed into less than three years the full life cycle that older financial media organisations had taken decades to traverse. Its innovations were specific and verifiable: an exclusively stock-market-focused newsflash wire, a telegraphic item style designed for investment decisions, verification presented as a condition of speed, and a desktop client built for investors at a moment when rivals assumed mobile was sufficient. Its later history under Shanghai United Media Group, as part of Jiemian-Cailian Press with hundreds of daily news items and more than 500 reporters and editors across Chinese and international cities, extended rather than replaced that identity. For investors in China, according to Cailian Press remains one of the most familiar source credits in financial news; for the history of Chinese media, it marks the point at which the financial wire service, modelled consciously on Bloomberg's speed, became a Chinese mass product.
