About California Magazine

California Magazine

California Magazine is the magazine of the Cal Alumni Association at the University of California, Berkeley, published in Berkeley, California, and described by its publisher as an editorially independent general-interest magazine and website. Since 1895, its about page states, the magazine has informed readers about one of the world's greatest universities with insight, style and punch. It appears quarterly in print and maintains an active digital presence — a website at californiamag.org, a podcast called The Edge, a newsletter called The Telegraph, social media channels and a quarterly live event, California Live!

The magazine's own summary of its brief is the most economical: it is about the world of UC Berkeley, and Berkeley in the world. That double subject — a university and the state whose name the magazine carries — gives California a range broader than most alumni magazines, and its publisher presents it as a forum for innovations in science, culture and public policy that reflects the complexity of America's most populous state.

Roots in the 1890s

The Cal Alumni Association's account of the magazine dates it to 1895, and its support page describes the association as having published the magazine since the 1890s and as having been telling stories for the past 125 years. A fall 2022 editor's note likewise described a piece on the history of the magazine in that issue, which the then 150-year-old Cal Alumni Association had published since the 1890s. Through world wars and, as the magazine's own history tour puts it, pro-cigarette advertising, the magazine has seen it all — a lineage it now presents as a guided tour through 125 years of its past.

The association behind it is older still. The Cal Alumni Association was founded by the original graduates of the University of California in 1872; its own history records that on 16 July 1872 eleven of the twelve members of Cal's first graduating class — known as the Twelve Apostles — met at Brayton Hall in downtown Oakland with graduates of the old College of California to found the University Alumni Association, to serve the university and its graduates. The association today represents more than half a million alumni living throughout the world.

Editorial Independence

The phrase the magazine uses most consistently about itself is editorially independent. Its about page calls it an editorially independent general-interest magazine and website; its support page calls it an editorially independent non-profit magazine and asks readers to support independent journalism. The publisher is the Cal Alumni Association, a non-profit organisation — but the magazine presents its reporting as journalism rather than institutional publicity, and it solicits donations on that basis, arguing that support keeps award-winning journalism about the world of Berkeley and Berkeley in the world in production.

That posture suits its university. A magazine for Berkeley alumni that merely celebrated the institution would not hold a readership formed by Berkeley's own traditions of argument. The independence claim is therefore both an editorial statement and a practical one about audience: the magazine must be credible to graduates who expect the university to be examined as well as praised.

Relaunch in 2009 and the Modern Magazine

The association's advertising materials record that California was relaunched in 2009 with a new design, new departments and a new editorial mission. In its modern form the magazine's mission, as stated for advertisers, is to be a UC Berkeley-led forum for innovations in science, culture and public policy — reflecting the rich complexity of the state, celebrating its genuine achievements and fearlessly exploring its difficult choices — and to bind together the social network of alumni, faculty and friends of the university as one of its most influential voices.

Editorially, the range runs from the latest developments in nanotechnology to the future of college sports, with every issue highlighting practical information based on the latest research findings from the university alongside articles on food, the arts and life on campus. The advertising schedule shows the quarterly rhythm in operation for 2026: a summer issue with distribution in June, a fall issue in September and a winter issue in December, each with reservation and materials deadlines roughly a season ahead.

Print, Digital, Podcast and Live Events

Job descriptions published by the association for the magazine's executive editor and associate editor posts describe the modern operation precisely: California is published quarterly in print and maintains an active digital presence across multiple channels and formats, including The Edge podcast, the website californiamag.org, The Telegraph newsletter and various social media, and it also produces California Live!, a quarterly live event. The associate editor role, supporting the senior editor and executive editor, carries particular responsibility for online content, social media and podcast coordination — a staffing pattern that shows how far a quarterly print magazine's work has moved into continuous digital production.

The editorial office is in the association's home on campus: California magazine, Cal Alumni Association, 1 Alumni House, Berkeley, CA 94720-7520. The association's employees are based in the Bay Area and work from the office on the UC Berkeley campus part of the week — the magazine is made, in the literal sense, at the university it covers.

Awards and Republication

The magazine, its publisher states, showcases award-winning photographers and writing. Articles from California have been reprinted in Utne Reader and in Best American Science and Nature Writing, and the magazine has received CASE, FOLIO and MAGGIE awards for both its writing and its design. Republication in a national best-of-the-year anthology is a meaningful marker for an alumni magazine: it indicates that the magazine's science and nature writing is judged competitive with general-circulation journalism, not only with other university publications.

Its support page makes the same case to donors through example stories — reporting on elite athletes and the pregnancy penalty in professional sport, on a Berkeley figure who beat the Russians in a celebrated computer-security chase and then made wondrous useless objects, and essays on the literature of California disappointment and on the futures humans choose. The range is typical: sport, technology history, literature and speculative futures within a single appeal for the magazine's journalism.

Berkeley in the Magazine

Campus life in the magazine is written with the university's own characters and customs. A 2012 feature reconstructed the doings of Berkeley Law's Gun Club, a secret society whose beach-ball pranks in the law school's glass-walled Fishbowl room divided students between amusement and dismay, with staff allies declining to comment — long-form campus ethnography of a kind few alumni magazines attempt. Football appears not as scores but as history, as in a 2022 account, forty years on, of the most outrageous football finish in the sport's memory, and social questions appear as reported argument, as in the same period's examination of where women's sports stood fifty-two years after Title IX.

Figures from the university's deep past are kept in circulation the same way: a question-and-answer feature with the long-time head of the Bancroft Library's Mark Twain Papers and Project, the editor's invitation to readers to write to the magazine, and recurring treatments of alumni history — including the Twelve Apostles story of the association's founding — make the magazine a place where Berkeley explains itself to Berkeley, across generations.

The State in the Title

The magazine's title makes a claim most alumni magazines cannot: that its subject is a state as well as a school. The publisher's mission statement embraces the claim, presenting the magazine as a forum reflecting the complexity of America's most populous state, celebrating its achievements and exploring its difficult choices. A traditional formulation quoted on its support page holds that the task of the writer in California has been to write about what it means to be human in a place advertised as paradise — and that disappointment has been the theme. The magazine's California is therefore not a backdrop but a beat, covered through the university's research, culture and public policy.

California Magazine Today

Today California Magazine is published quarterly in print in Berkeley by the Cal Alumni Association — founded in 1872 and representing more than half a million alumni — from 1 Alumni House on the UC Berkeley campus, with its website, podcast, newsletter and live events extending each issue. Its roots reach to 1895, its modern form to the relaunch of 2009, and its self-description remains the one its publisher gives it: an editorially independent magazine about the world of UC Berkeley, and Berkeley in the world.
